On Wednesday, reports surfaced that retailer Sears might file bankruptcy, which could force the closure of some, if not all, of the retailer's remaining 900 locations. While other retailers in recent years, such as Toys 'R' Us and RadioShack have faded away, Sears' demise would make the end of an industry titan. The company was at one time the nation's largest retailer, selling items as small as earrings, to as big as houses. MORE INFO: SEARS COULD FILE FOR BANKRUPTCYHere is a look back at the rise and fall of Sears:1886: Richard W. Sears launched the R.W. Sears Watch Company in Minneapolis, advertising his company by mailing catalogs of his watches to businessmen.1887:  Sears moved his fledgling business to Chicago and expanded his mail-to-order business. 1895: After Richard W. Sears joined forces with Alvah Curtis Roebuck, the company quickly became a mail-to-order giant. By the mid-1890s, Sears had a 532-page catalog of items. According to the retailer, the 1895 catalog contained clothing, accessories, wagons, fishing tackle, stoves, furniture, china, musical instruments, saddles, firearms, buggies, bicycles, baby carriages and glassware. 1906: Not only was Sears expanding operations in Chicago, but it was also opening centers elsewhere, including in Dallas. The opening of a shipping operation in Dallas helped lower the cost of shipping for the retailer. 1913: The Kenmore brand launches, first as a line of sewing machines. In the 20s, Kenmore would launch a line of washing machines. It was not until the 70s when Kenmore expanded into refrigerators and air conditioners. 1927: The now mature, 40-year business was working in a different environment. America was starting to urbanize, as Americans started moving into city centers. This caused the explosion of chain stores throughout the US. In response, Sears opened its first retail store in 1925, showcasing items from the catalog. The store was such a success, Sears was able to open 26 more locations by 1927.  This was also the year the Craftsman line of tools launched. Although not manufactured by Sears, it was owned by Sears and sold at Sears stores and in catalogs. Sears would own exclusive rights to Craftsman tools until 2017, when it was sold to Black and Decker. 1931: For the first time in company history, the majority of Sears' revenue came from its retail stores. According to Sears, 53.4 percent of sales in 1931 were from its stores. By 1933, Sears opened 400 retail locations. 1941: As the United States entered into war, Sears' expansion of retail operations paused. At this point, Sears had opened 600 locations.1953: Sears resumes its growth not only in the United States, but it is also opening stores in Canada. 1973: Almost 90 years after moving to Chicago, Sears expands its operations into the Sears Tower, which is one of the tallest skyscrappers in the word. 1993: More than a decade after launching the Sears catalog, Sears ended production of the catalog, and instead shifted its focus on its brick and mortar locations, auto stores, and outlets. 2004: Kmart purchased Sears (then named the Sears Roebuck Co.) and merged the two brands into the Sears Holding Company. This briefly gave the company record profits in 2006. 2015: Sears announced that it has lost billion in the last four years. Eddie Lampert was brought in as CEO and gave the company a 0 million loan to help avoid bankruptcy. Sears has also been closing a large number of underperforming stores.2018: In June, Sears announced it is liquidating 78 locations. Lampert also warned the company is running out of money, and likely will need to restructure debt.  3786

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — An orphaned mountain lion cub who was badly burned in a Northern California wildfire is being treated at the Oakland Zoo after being rescued. The zoo says a firefighter rescued the four- to six-week-old cub Wednesday from the Zogg Fire. The cub, who weighs less than 4 pounds, had his whiskers singed off and his paws badly burned. He was given antibiotics, pain medications and a milk formula for kittens. A vet at the zoo says he's eating on his own and acting “feisty," which are both promising signs of recovery. 547

On Thursday, Facebook said it would not accept new political ads in the week leading up to the 2020 election in an effort to protect the integrity of U.S. elections.Facebook also announced Thursday that the platform would remove any posts that "claim people will get COVID-19 if they take part in voting," and will add more information to any posts that attempt to suppress the vote with the threat of the virus. In addition, the company will add more information to posts that attempt to "delegitimize" the outcome of the election or "discuss" the legitimacy of voting methods. Finally, Facebook said it would add more information to posts from political candidates that attempt to claim victory before final results are tallied. The company says it will rely on "official results from Reuters and the National Election Pool."Facebook faced criticism for neglecting to combat the spread of disinformation prior to the 2016 election. U.S. officials say Russians used the platform to boost divisive and misleading information during that election, and reports indicate that several other countries are attempting to influence the 2020 election. 1149

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- It's a 3,100-mile bike ride that starts from the Oceanside Pier Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Buzz Ponce, 69, will be riding his bike coast to coast from Oceanside to St. Augustine, Florida.  He is doing it to raise money for the Warrior's Heart Foundation. The foundation helps active military members, veterans and first responders dealing PTSD, alcohol abuse and drug addiction. Buzz says he started planning the bike ride two years ago. At first, he says it was all about seeing if he could do it, but then realized it would be better if he could use it to help others. "It really flashed on me that I should do something other than just about me. And that’s when I came across the idea of trying to raise money for a cause," Ponce said. The organization has a treatment center in San Antonio.  Ponce says his goal is to raise ,000 to hopefully start a scholarship for people that need to travel to the center.People can donate Buzz's cause here. If all goes as scheduled, Buzz will be in St. Augustine on July 1.  1091

OCEANSIDE (CNS) - An attempted murder of a peace officer conviction was overturned Friday for a man accused of intentionally running down a motorcycle officer during a routine traffic stop in Oceanside, after an appellate court ruled that his attorney ignored the defendant's argument that he was innocent of the crime.Roberto Ignacio Flores was sentenced to 29 years to life in prison for allegedly running his car into Oceanside Police Officer Brad Hunter on June 19, 2017, leaving the officer hospitalized with life-threatening injuries that kept him out of the field for just over six months. While Flores contended that he was not the driver of the Dodge Neon that struck Hunter, Flores' attorney, John Wilshke, argued at trial that Flores was the driver, but did not have the intent to kill required for an attempted murder conviction.RELATED: Oceanside officer targeted in hit-and-run is back homeFlores also disagreed with his lawyer's concession on weapons possession charges related to a collection of guns found at his home.A three justice panel ruled Friday that Flores' sixth amendment rights were violated, as he was not allowed to present the defense of his choice. The Hunters released this statement to 10News:"Obviously we are very disappointed in the decision by the 4th DCA but confident that a retrial will result in another conviction - Attempted Murder of a Peace Officer - and the appropriate sentence. It's a shame our justice system indulges games such as the ones he is playing - subjecting the victims of horrific crimes like this one to further emotional distress and further wasting the tax payers money but we are confident that justice will ultimately prevail."In a statement, The Oceanside Police Department said: "Regardless of the court’s decision, it is our continued hope that Flores is brought to justice for the willful assault on Officer Hunter."Trial prosecutor Keith Watanabe, who said he is preparing for a retrial, described the defendant as "very dangerous and evil" and said Flores "bragged about striking the officer and putting him in a wheelchair." "We are disappointed by the ruling. When Flores was sentenced to 29 years to life in prison, we believed justice was served and that we would never have to see him again. Unfortunately, we face the daunting task of having to take him to trial all over again.," Watanabe told 10News. "He proved himself to be erratic and dangerous and we will do everything in our power to protect police officers and the community. He will be re-tried. ""I spoke to Officer Brad Hunter’s family. They are discouraged and frustrated by the injustice of having to see Flores in court all over again. Though justice was delayed, they intend to persist until they finally see Flores sent away for good," he added.RELATED: Suspect arrested for attempted murder of Oceanside motorcycle officerAccording to facts laid out in the appellate panel's ruling, Flores was angry at law enforcement following his March 2017 arrest on the gun possession charges. While in jail, he called his girlfriend and told her to claim she owned the guns, since she didn't have a prior felony conviction, the ruling states. He also said the officers "harassed and mocked him" and swore "that when he was released he would go after the people who were responsible," according to the ruling. On June 19, Hunter, a 29-year veteran of the department, was struck while pulling over a driver for an expired registration near Oceanside Boulevard and Foussat Road.RELATED: Injured Oceanside officer hit by driver now awake, 'in good spirits'Flores, who was not involved in the traffic stop, allegedly accelerated and veered directly into Hunter, scooping him up and flipping him over the defendant's car. Hunter suffered head injuries and his leg was broken in three places. The officer had to be placed in a coma until swelling on the brain subsided. Hunter testified he has no memory of the crash.Flores sped away but was captured a few minutes later, Watanabe said.Once in a jail cell, Flores told a sheriff's detective posing as an inmate and a confidential informant that he intended to hit Hunter and wasn't sorry about it, according to the prosecutor."He (Flores) said, `I got one. I got one,"' Watanabe said, referring to the defendant hitting a police officer.RELATED: Driver accused of hitting an Oceanside motorcycle cop will stand trialThe appellate court based its ruling on McCoy v Louisiana, a case recently ruled on by the U.S. Supreme Court. In that case, Robert McCoy was accused of murdering three of his wife's family members. While McCoy sought to maintain his innocence at trial, his attorney pursued a defense that involved admitting to the killings. In a bid to avoid the death penalty, McCoy's attorney argued that the defendant suffered from severe mental issues, and pursued a second-degree murder conviction instead.Jurors recommended death sentences, but McCoy's convictions were overturned and a new trial was ordered. 4999
