A small business in Brooklyn is taking on Congress, lobbying for insurance coverage for future pandemics. While not an easy battle, the National Retail Federation says these conversations have to be had now in order to keep retailers open.Ann Cantrell, speaking in front of the US House Financial Services Committee, said, "The past few months have been the darkest of my life.”The owner of "Annie's Blue Ribbon General Store" in Brooklyn said it's time for real solutions."Insurance companies should not be in the practice of denying policy holders coverage when they need it the most. What happened to 'you're in good hands' or 'like a good neighbor,' Cantrell said.Speaking on behalf of the National Retail Federation, Cantrell pleaded her case, saying, "We are a community store and people look to us as a pillar of light and hope in the neighborhood. Kids meet their friends at the shop to pick out a gift for their teacher, parents bribe their kids with a treat if they get a shot at the doctor or reward them if they get a good report card."The pandemic, she said, nearly shut her business down. She said she pays ,000 a year for what she calls "all risk" insurance. She was under the impression there was no risk that wouldn't be covered.“When we (were) closed by the governor (New York’s Andrew Cuomo), literally the government shut us down,” Cantrell said. “I put in another call, each time saying that viruses were not covered under business interruption insurance.”The National Retail Federation said Cantrell is a voice for retailers everywhere. And while it was able to get a hearing, the organization says many insurance companies aren't on board.“What they’re saying is this will not be isolated to one area, this seems to be unending and keeps going on and on and on so they’re afraid it’ll cost trillions of dollars,” said Leon Buck, the National Retail Federation’s vice president of banking and financial services. “But what we’re saying is we don’t think so. We think if we’re paying into the fund and the federal government has money, the insurance companies will be fine."“If we were in a COVID-21, for instance, if this happened again, maybe another virus, the business would be protected,” Buck added. “They’d file a claim with their insurance carrier whom they pay monthly premiums to and the federal government would help pick up the tab.”As for Cantrell, who has loved general stores since she was a kid, this is about speaking up because someone has to.“It's not just small companies like mine, it’s big companies. No one is covered under business interruption insurance,” Cantrell said.Luckily, she said she built a good website and the holidays and her Paycheck Protection Program loan will carry her through. A Philadelphia police officer who was seen on video pulling down the masks of protesters and spraying chemical irritants in their faces was charged Wednesday with simple assault, reckless endangerment, official oppression, and possession of an instrument of crime, the Philadelphia Inquirer and CNN report.Officer Richard P. Nicoletti, 35, turned himself in on Wednesday.The charges against Nicoletti stem from a June 1 Black Lives Matter protest, when demonstrators blocked I-676 in Philadelphia. Bystander video showed Nicoletti — who was acting as part of the Philadelphia Police SWAT team — approaching three protesters who were kneeling and sitting on the ground.The video shows Nicoletti pull down the demonstrators' masks and spray pepper spray in their faces. He also shoved one of the protesters. The District Attorney's statement claimed Nicoletti sprayed the protesters "without provocation."None of the demonstrators were arrested.According to CNN, the Philadelphia Police Department reviewed the bystander video and opened an investigation on June 24.The officer's lawyer, Fortunato Perri Jr., said Nicoletti was simply following orders."His unit was ordered by commanders to clear the highway with the approved use of tear gas and pepper spray," Perri said, according ot the Inquirer. "The city's leadership was given the opportunity to apologize for approving the use of force, but Nicoletti finds himself fired and charged with crimes." 1460

A postal worker's union says that USPS employees were not involved in an incident that led to several unopened mail bags dumped in two separate locations in Glendale, California, last week.On Thursday, KTLA-TV in Los Angeles obtained surveillance footage that showed a Budget rental truck pulling into the parking lot of Glendale spa.That morning, at about 5:40 a.m. local time, the truck pulled into the parking lot of 7Q Spa Laser & Aesthetics and began pulling bags of unopened mail and packages out of the truck. The truck later pulled away, leaving the mail behind.About two hours after the truck initially pulled up at 7Q, the Glendale Police Department received a call about a second large pile of mail that was found in an alley about a half a mile away.It's unclear if the two instances are related. The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that the Glendale Police Department had opened investigations into the incidents.On Tuesday, Omar Gonzalez, the Western Regional Coordinator for the American Postal Workers Union, told CNN that the person caught on surveillance footage dumping mail was a "contractor," and not a USPS employee.It's unclear how the mail made it on to a Budget rental truck. Mail coming into the Glendale post office is supposed to arrive on USPS trucks."If it's outgoing, we don't know how it got into the Budget truck," Gonzalez told CNN.CNN also confirmed Tuesday that the Postal Inspector's Office had opened an investigation. A pastor from North Carolina is accused of peeing on a passenger while onboard a Delta Airlines flight earlier this month. He has been cited for simple assault.According to a police report, Daniel Chalmers acknowledged having “a couple of drinks” before an overnight flight from Las Vegas to Detroit on October 12, reports the Charlotte Observer.Chalmers told police he was taking prescribed medicine, which he later admitted was a sleeping aid.The victim reports she “woke up feeling something warm on her body and when she looked up to her right, she observed Mr. Chalmers standing next to her shaking his exposed penis,” the police report states according to the Charlotte Observer. The victim then started screaming.A police officer was onboard at the time and asked the victim what happened.“He peed on me!,” she said, according to the report.The police report states Chalmers responded affirmatively that he peed on the woman, and said “I thought I was going to the bathroom.”Chalmers and his wife, Shara Lea Chalmers, lead “Love Wins Ministries” in Raleigh, North Carolina.They released a statement Tuesday that reads, "I want to sincerely apologize for my actions on this overnight flight. I took an Ambien for the first time to sleep well on my flight and had a terrible reaction. I want to please ask everyone for their forgiveness in this.
