The parent company of New York Sports Club and several other fitness club chains has filed for bankruptcy protection as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc with its operations. In a statement released Monday, Town Sports International — which also owns Boston Sports Clubs, Lucille Roberts, and several other fitness brands — said it agreed to voluntarily file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection. The company added that the filing was made to simply restructure debt and that it does not plan to go out of business. In a message to employees, the company said it does not expect any changes to day-to-day operations or compensation and benefits.CNN reports that the company laid off "much" of its 7,000-person workforce earlier this year to preserve cash.Bloomberg reported Friday that Town Sports International was on the verge of filing for bankruptcy after talks of an million capital injection from Kennedy Lewis Investment Management fell through.Fitness clubs and gyms have taken a huge hit amid the pandemic, as the CDC continues to recommend against congregating indoors when possible. Sales of home fitness equipment have soared, and Americans have taken up other healthy outdoor habits like biking while restrictions keep some gyms closed. 1272

The Idaho Lottery launched what’s being billed as “a first of its kind” Scratch Game Wednesday, by introducing a clear plastic scratch ticket. The new game, called “Cash Getaway,” is 100% recyclable, Lottery officials said. “The Idaho Lottery has a long history of being on the forefront of cutting-edge technology,” said Lottery Director Jeff Anderson. “Idaho is a unique geographic marketplace that is ideal for trying new products and new innovations that will eventually lead to introduction in other jurisdictions around the country.”Players can actually see through the ticket. In the clear play game, located on the top half of the ticket, players scratch and reveal a unique code for use with their mobile device or PC. The bottom half of the ticket plays like a traditional Scratch ticket. Players without access to a mobile device or a computer can still play the new game. Each ticket features the Lottery’s security bar code which may be scanned at retail locations to collect their winnings. The new game will be available in retail stores throughout Idaho by the end of the week, Anderson added. The new five-dollar game also features two top prizes of ,000 –- awarded either in cash payment or as a luxurious “vacation of a lifetime." The winner gets to choose. The technology for this new product was created by Pollard Banknote, a Scratch Game printing business partner of the Idaho Lottery. 1464
The holiday season leads the mad dash to the end of the year for businesses, but this year’s dash may look entirely different because of the pandemic.“Especially the grassroots efforts, connecting with them face-to-face. Unfortunately, right now, we can’t do that. So, we need to be thinking about now, ‘How can we get in front of people more frequently?’” said Lacey Book, a business consultant specializing in helping small businesses succeed. “Essentially, we need to get in front of people and cut through the noise of everything else.”In these challenging times, she offered specific tips for navigating through December.Among her ideas:Make sure your business has a web presence that is easy to navigate. It's critical to reaching customers, who are now mostly shopping online.Reach out to repeat customers you’ve had over the months and years through email and social media.Create connections with other businesses by collaborating on marketing and see how you can help them. Being benevolent, she said, goes a long way.Discounts help as well“I think it would really be important to look at, ‘Where in my business can I offer maybe a discount or extend the opportunity for people to buy something at a lower price point?’” Book said. “Because people are also price shopping, where in the past, people were really able to find money for the things that they really wanted. But now, what they’re doing is spending money on what they actually need.”While these tips are aimed at helping businesses get through the pandemic, Lacey Book said it is likely some of the advice will be relevant beyond that, because our shopping habits and expectations may have changed for the long haul. 1694
