ISLAMABAD, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said here Friday that he is proud of Pakistan's brotherly relationship with China and wishes the Chinese around the world well.     Zardari was the chief guest at the National Day reception hosted by Chinese Ambassador Luo Zhaohui at the Chinese embassy.     Replying a question by Xinhua on his arrival, Zardari said, "For the Chinese around the world, I wish them well. I wish them their independence and I applaud the success."     He also said, "I'm proud of the friendship which we have with China. And I'm proud of our brotherly relationship. And I'm with them in this moment of happiness. The people of Pakistan share the moments of happiness with the people of China."     Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majid, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir, Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, government officials and senior diplomats from other embassies based in Islamabad were present at the reception.     The guests watched dances, songs and acrobatics performed by Chinese troops. At the end of the performance, chief guests and the Chinese ambassador went on the stage to greet the performers and had a group photo with them. 

BRUSSELS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met Thursday with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on bilateral ties, vowing to enhance cooperation between the two sides.     Xi, who congratulated Barroso for his reelection, said China appreciated his efforts in the past five years on boosting development of the comprehensive and strategic partnership between China and the European Union. China believes, too, that the bilateral ties would advance further in a healthy and stable way within the new term of Barroso, Xi said.     Xi said China and the EU, who have formed a pattern of comprehensive, wide-range and multilevel cooperation, have become two important forces to help shape the future international structure into a multipolar world.     Xi put forward a three-point proposal to further strengthen bilateral relations between China and the EU. The two sides should mull over tangible ways to properly handle disagreements, to foster new cooperation and to firmly stem the torrent of trade and investment protectionism, Xi said.     Third, to always adhere to the principle of equality and mutualtrust. The Sino-EU relations will remove various obstacles and make progress as long as both sides stick to the principle of "mutual respect and mutual trust, consultation on an equal footing, and seeking common ground while shelving differences," Xi said. It will also be important to bear in mind the overall interests of bilateral relations and respect each other's major concerns, Xi said.     China is ready to work with the EU to build Sino-EU relations into a model of peaceful coexistence and friendly exchanges between countries that transcend civilizations, social systems and development models, Xi said.     Barroso offered congratulations on the success of China's impressive National Day celebrations on October 1, speaking highly of the great achievements of China in the last 60 years.     Sino-EU relations have seen remarkable achievements, he said, adding that the past five years have witnessed frequent top-level exchanges, fruitful personnel and cultural exchanges, and rapid development of economic and trade cooperation.     China and the EU have seen increasing common ground on global issues, including the international financial crisis and climate change, and both sides oppose protectionism and champion a just international order, Barroso said.     In the next five years, the EU will continue developing and promoting the EU and China's comprehensive and strategic partnership and strive to handle disagreements in a mature and responsible spirit so as to further develop bilateral ties, he said.     Barroso also wished the forthcoming Europalia Chinese Art Festival a great success.     Xi arrived here Wednesday for an official visit to Belgium, the first leg of his five-nation European tour. BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government supports UN's leading role in promoting international cooperation to curb climate change, Premier Wen Jiabao said here Friday.     Wen made the remarks while meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who arrived here Thursday evening for a four-day visit. Calling the United Nations a core player of the international system, Wen said the organization has played an important role in settling major international and regional issues as well as global challenges. He stressed it is of key importance to stick to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" when responding to climate change, and to take into consideration the interests and voices of developing countries.     Ban also expressed hope for a fruitful Copenhagen summit on climate change in December with joint efforts from all parties concerned.

BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's major state-owned enterprises (SOEs) under the supervision of the central government reported a 30-percent fall in net profit last year, the country's state assets supervisor said over the weekend.     A total of 141 SOEs under the supervision of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council reported a net profit of 696.18 billion yuan (101.96 billion U.S. dollars) last year, down 30.8 percent from a year ago, the commission said in an online statement.     Yet, total assets of the 141 SOEs rose for the fifth consecutive year since 2004. Assets of the 141 state firms were worth 5.56 trillion yuan at the end of 2008, up 8.6 percent from the previous year.     Net profit of centrally administered SOEs had been rising for four years in a row from 2004 to 2007, but it fell last year as the global financial crisis struck.     The commission said 83 out of the total 141 were able to report a year-on-year growth in net profit last year.     These 141 SOEs also turned in taxes worth 1.04 trillion yuan last year, up 18.6 percent from a year ago.     The total assets of centrally administered SOEs were augmented by 2.6 trillion yuan in the past five years, or at an annualized average of 13.7 percent from 2004 to 2008.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China resolutely opposes U.S. move to start anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations into seamless steel pipes imported from China, the Ministry of Commerce(MOC) said.     The current hardships facing the U.S. steel industry was because consumption and demand waned after the financial crisis. "Blindly blaming Chinese imports of dumping or subsidies is lack of factual bases, which China strongly opposes," MOC announced in a statement on its website Saturday.     The statement came after U.S. Department of Commerce said Wednesday that it had initiated anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations at the request of the U.S. Steel Corporation, V&M Star LP, TMK IPSCO and the United Steelworkers (USW).     The U.S. petitioners requested a 98.37-percent anti-dumping duty against the Chinese imports and additional countervailing duties to offset what they allege are Chinese government subsidies.     The case was the seventh such investigations this year launched by the U.S. Department of Commerce against Chinese imports that included claims of both dumping and subsidies, MOC said.     Resorting to trade protectionism would not solve the real problem, instead it would hurt the interests of U.S. downstream steel businesses as well as bilateral trade, it said.
