SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Researchers at UC San Diego and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography are noticing a welcome side effect to the Coronavirus. Social isolation and quarantines may be helping to reverse climate change."This isn't the right reason to be changing the environment," says Professor Ralph Keeling. "We should be doing it because we want to do it, not because we're forced to do it."Recent studies by the European Space Agency showed significantly less Nitrogen Dioxide in the air over Spain, France, and Italy during March of 2020, compared to March of 2019. All three of those countries are under heavy lockdowns because of the Coronavirus.Meanwhile, a report in the New York Times showed similar changes over New York City, Los Angeles, and Seattle.Keeling says it's good to see the short-term gains. But there's no way to know if this will lead to long term changes in the environment. He compares it to a bathtub. As Keeling describes it, the pollutants we put into the atmosphere are like the water flowing into the tub. "If you turn down the tap on a bathtub, and you look at the spigot, you can tell there's less water flowing in," he says. "But if you look at the level of a tub. You don't see immediately that the levels are rising more slowly."Meanwhile, the oceans may also see a benefit from the economic slowdown. Scripps Professor Jeremy Jackson says shipping will slow down, and fisheries that may rely on government subsidies will have to halt operations. That could help fish populations rebound."That very tragic loss of jobs is definitely going to be good for the state of marine resources," Jackson says. "We are going to be preying upon fish and shellfish at a much lower level."But he adds that it's a balancing act. The worse things get for the economy and industries, the better it will be for the environment. But we have to make sure people's livelihoods are protected as well."If we go into a depression, then industrial output and activity are going to take a long time to recover," he says. "But that very grim news will make a big dent on environmental damage."Still, both professors say this could be short-lived. Jackson worries that governments may turn to higher-polluting industries like oil and gas to help pull the world out of economic recessions. And Keeling says none of these gains will last unless people change their habits long-term."I think how we come out of this will make a difference. You know people are learning how to live with less," says Keeling. "We'd like to bend the curve for co2 as well as bending the curve for the Coronavirus. That will take sustained changes, not just short term changes.""What this tells us is that environments can spring back very quickly in terms of animal and plant life if we stop stressing it," says Jackson. "I'm cautiously hopeful this whole business will give us a slightly increased sense of humility about what we can get away with, and this will help towards getting us to think more sustainably." 3012

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents at Aquatera Apartments in Mission Valley say they are upset about how managers handled notifying them about a violent attack in their complex. Many residents saw police cars parked at Aquatera for much of the day on Sept. 4. An email from the management company was not sent notifying residents until Monday.Aquatera spokesperson Margie Newman confirms to 10News that a resident was assaulted on the premises. She says the resident went to Aquatera staff for help. Staff immediately called police. Newman says a suspect was arrested within the hour. Because the threat to residents was ended so quickly, the decision was made to gather more information before notifying other residents. "Our team simply wanted to get it right. The threat was passed. The perpetrator was caught within the hour, so we wanted to make sure that what we were sharing was the most accurate information," Newman said.Several residents told 10News they asked Aquatera staff what had happened and were not given answers. Monday, a resident checked the Crimemapping.com website, which aggregates police report data from the San Diego Police Department. It listed a rape at the Aquatera address at noon on the 4th. The resident contacted Aquatera management to ask why residents hadn't been notified about a sexual assault five days prior. A few hours later is when the email went out to residents, saying an assault had taken place and an arrest made. The email also listed a number of steps residents could take to increase their personal safety."It's disturbing that it took five days, especially when our safety is concerned. Very disturbing," said a resident who identified herself as Lisa. "My husband is now in charge of walking the dogs at night. I have mace that I actually bought today. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials have warned at least three local churches about having services indoors. The county sent out three letters to Skyline Church in La Mesa; Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lemon Grove; and Awaken Church's campus on Balboa Avenue in Kearny Mesa.The letters to Skyline and Lighthouse were very similar, saying indoor services create "significant risk of spreading COVID-19," encouraging the churches to move their in-person services outside. The third document is a cease-and-desist letter sent to Awaken Church ordering the church to stop indoor operations. All three letters are dated July 17 and are signed by County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten. The letters state that failure to comply with these orders can mean criminal misdemeanor citations with a fine of ,000 for each violation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Gas and Electric warned customers that the company may have to shut off power to some rural residents due to Santa Ana winds.The notifications come as the Valley Fire rages and a red flag warning remains through 8 p.m. Wednesday night. The company said it notified more than 16,000 customers about the possible public safety power shutoffs. Notified residents should be prepared to be without power through Thursday, SDG&E said.The Valley Fire has scorched more than 17,000 acres and is 11% contained as of Wednesday morning. 567
