SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Social networking giant Facebook on Tuesday announced that it has bought Push Pop Press, a digital publishing company that develops the technology to help make interactive books optimized for iPad and other Apple devices."We're thrilled to confirm that we've acquired Push Pop Press, a startup whose groundbreaking software changes the way people publish and consume digital content," Facebook said in a statement.Push Pop Press was co-founded by Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris, both former Apple employees, and was known for teaming up with former U.S. vice president Al Gore to create a digital version of his book "Our Choice"."Although Facebook isn't planning to start publishing digital books, the ideas and technology behind Push Pop Press will be integrated with Facebook, giving people even richer ways to share their stories," Push Pop Press said in a statement posted on its website."With millions of people publishing to Facebook each day, we think it's going to be a great home for Push Pop Press," the statement added.Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by the two companies.

THE HAGUE, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Bird flu was discovered at a poultry farm in the central Dutch province of Flevoland, the Ministry of Agriculture said Friday.It said the virus discovered was a mild variant. The farm's 47,000 chickens were slaughtered to prevent the virus turning into a contagious and deadly variant.It remains uncertain whether the chickens were infected with the high or low pathologene H7 variant. The low pathologene version can mutate into a high pathologen, which is extremely transmittable.Poultry from other farms in a zone of three kilometres of the contaminated farm will be tested. Pharmacologist Tu Youyou, 81, became the first scientist on the Chinese mainland to win Lasker Award, known as "America's Nobels" for their knack of gaining future recognition by the Nobel committee.Tu, a scientist at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing, pioneered a new approach to malaria treatment that has benefited hundreds of millions of people and promises to benefit many times more. By applying modern techniques and rigor to a heritage provided by 5000 years of Chinese traditional practitioners, she has delivered its riches into the 21st century."Not often in the history of clinical medicine can we celebrate a discovery that has eased the pain and distress of hundreds of millions of people and saved the lives of countless numbers of people, particularly children, in over 100 countries," Lucy Shapiro, a member of the award jury and professor of Stanford University, said while describing Tu' s discovery.Shapiro said the discovery, chemical identification, and validation of artemisinin, a highly effective anti-malarial drug, is largely due to the "scientific insight, vision and dogged determination" of Professor Tu and her team. SAN FRANCISCO, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Google on Tuesday rolled out a new social networking service named "Google+", a long awaited move of the Internet search giant to crack the industry's social trend dominated by Facebook.Unlike Facebook, Google said that the project is designed for sharing with small groups like college roommates and parents. " Today's online services turn friendship into fast food, wrapping everyone in 'friend' paper," Google said in a blog post announcing the new service.Other Google+ features include Sparks, which gathers articles and videos on topics of interests or hobbies; and Hangouts, which allows users join live multi-person video chat.There is also a mobile version of Google+ for smartphones running Google's Android operating system, which enables multi- person text message chats and instant upload of photos from the phone.The Google+ project is currently in field trial and by invitation only. Users can select people from their Gmail contacts and organize them into different groups.Google+ is expected to test whether Google could come back from its past frustration in social networking, such as Buzz, a social networking and messaging too integrated into its Gmail service. Some of Google Buzz's features have been widely criticized for privacy concerns.Market research data show that Facebook has surpassed Google in terms of time spent on each site, a fact that advertisers attach importance to.According to Internet market research company comScore, including YouTube, 180 million people visited Google sites in May, compare to 157.2 million on Facebook.
