SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's recovering job market will take a hit from the new wave of coronavirus-related restrictions that went into effect this week, SANDAG's chief economist said Thursday. The region's jobless rate had been falling from a peak of 25% in early May to 14.3% in late June, the San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday. However, on July 6, new restrictions went into effect to slow the spread of COVID 19. Restaurants and several other public-facing businesses were forced to end indoor service, while bars that don't serve food were required to close. That sent people who had returned to work back to seeking unemployment."Until there's a vaccine in place, it's going to be a very bumpy ride," said Ray Major, SANDAG's chief economist. "It's going to be up and down. There will be times probably where they say OK we can start opening up again, and then for some reason the health numbers start to become worse, and so the economy is going to be impacted again."At Little Italy's Cloak and Petal restaurant, managing partner Cesar Vallin said only about half of the restaurant's 40 workers have been brought back. He said the restaurant changed its menu and moved service outside, but the lower capacity is hitting revenue. "Let's just face it, this could happen two or three more times by end of the year," Vallin said. "If it does, we've got to get really good at opening and closing turn key."SANDAG estimates 240,000 San Diegans are currently unemployed.Faisal Asseri, Cloak and Petal's Bar Director, started receiving unemployment insurance this week again after returning to work. "I would like to say that I'm doing better than what it kind of looks like out there," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials Monday echoed Governor Gavin Newsom’s demand to close more businesses as coronavirus intensifies.The state announced Monday that it was closing indoor operations for places of worship, restaurants, wineries, movie theatres and family entertainment, zoos, museums, cardrooms, fitness centers, some offices, personal care services, hair salons and barbershops, and malls. All bars were also ordered to close."We are moving back into a modification mode of our stay-at-home order," Newsom said. The new order takes effect in San Diego at midnight Wednesday morning. The announcement comes as 419 more people throughout the county tested positive for coronavirus Monday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County residents grabbed umbrellas and raincoats Wednesday as a cold storm system brought showers, flooding, winds, lightning, and snow to Southern California. Wednesday will be cooler and windier, with the heaviest rain and threat of flooding between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to 10News meteorologist Megan Parry. A Flash Flood Watch was in effect Wednesday until Thursday at 1 a.m. for the coast and mountain areas. Anyone in need of sandbags to prevent flooding can get them for free through the County of San Diego or City of San Diego. The largest outages were in Chula Vista and Bonita, with some 4,300 customers out of power, and Oceanside, with 555 customers out of power. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are investigating Monday a woman's report that she was held against her will in Rancho Pe?asquitos.A woman arrived at a home on Caminito Cuadro at 10:45 a.m. and said she had been kidnapped and held captive in a neighboring house, police said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Fire Urban Search and Rescue task force is on their way to Hawaii to prepare for Hurricane Lane's landfall.The hurricane could bring as many as 20 inches of rain onshore and winds of more than 100 miles per hour.The search and rescue task force is traveling with 55,000 pounds of equipment, hoping to get ahead of the hurricane before it makes landfall.The crew will land in Kauai and then get deployed to wherever help is needed. For the first 72-hours, they must be completely self-sufficient, relying on MRE's and having enough water to survive.The team could be in Hawaii for as long as three weeks but it's expected they will return in 14 days. 692
