SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Humane Society and District Attorney’s office are teaming up to encourage people to report suspected animal cruelty. According to the Humane Society, animal cruelty is one of the earliest and most dramatic indicators that someone may be developing a pattern of seeking power and control by abusing others. The Humane Society says when animals in the home are abused or neglected, it is a warning sign that others in the home may be in danger. “Often times when animals are being abused, people are being abused too,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, President and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. “That’s why it’s so important to report animal cruelty and neglect when you see it.”Anyone who wants to report animal cruelty is asked to call the Humane Society at 619-299-7012. All reports of suspected abuse or neglect can remain anonymous. 873

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District, one of the state's largest districts, begins the new school year online Monday.Even though California has given both private and public schools in San Diego County the green light to reopen schools on Tuesday, Sept. 1, SD Unified officials say for now they will stick with distance learning. The district's online instruction plan includes:A six-hour school day with customized learning experiences for each K-12 studentAll students will have daily, live interaction with their teachers via video conferencingCustom learning experiences will be based on student needs and will include daily live, online instruction (up to three hours), independent learning (at least two hours), working with other students in small groups or participating in educator office hours (at least one hour)All Elementary students will receive instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, and the artsStudents will receive grades to measure their progressSome children who have faced learning challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be offered appointments for in-person sessions, which could begin as soon as late September, according to the district."The teacher will of course try various interventions teaching strategies online, but if the teacher comes to the conclusion that this student would benefit from in-person interventions, then the teacher will reach out to the family," said San Diego Education Association President Kisha Borden.Students will be identified by their teachers for participation based on several factors: Students who had below standard marks on their spring 2020 report cards, special education students who did not meet IEP goals, and special education students with intense support needs. The district says this option will not be offered immediately and will take teachers a few weeks to make these assessments. 1940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District is releasing an update on the next phases of its plan to reopen schools for in-person learning. The current plan to begin Phase Two for elementary school students is after the winter break on Jan. 4, said SDUSD Board President John Lee Evans.Middle and high Schools will start Jan. 25, at the beginning of the third academic quarter, said Evans.Elementary students will be divided between morning and afternoon sessions to allow for social distancing in the classroom. Middle and high school students will attend in person sessions, two days per week. All families will have the option to continue distance learning, said Evans."What can throw this plan off track? There are two main factors," said Evans. "Number one, lack of success of controlling the virus in phase one -- which we don't believe will happen; or two, external conditions of the virus in the community.""I would like to make an appeal to our community to assist us in reopening our schools," said Evans. "Personally, I do not believe that bars and restaurants should be open before our schools are open." 1136

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three Southern Californians, one of which from San Diego, charged Facebook with being complacent in a data breach spanning about 87 million users. In a class action suit filed in San Diego, Jordan O'Hara, of San Diego, Brent Collins, of Newport Beach, Calif., and Olivia Johnston, of Culver City, Calif., the social media company worked with Cambridge Analytica, former White House strategist Steve Bannon, and Cambridge University researcher Aleksandr Kogan. In the lawsuit, the three say Facebook "conspired" to help Cambridge Analytica, Bannon, and Kogan steal personal data in order to manipulate public opinion and U.S. elections. The suit claims Facebook has been aware of this and similar breaches for years.RELATED: Yes, Facebook is scanning your messages"Facebook's failure to adequately protect ... data allowed [the defendants] to engage in an illicit and illegal appropriation of the data, the purpose of which was, at least in part, to disrupt the 2016 American presidential race," the lawsuit claims."The means by which this conspiracy was accomplished reads like an international crime novel, except that it actually happened," the suit adds. The lawsuit requests compensatory and punitive damages in favor of the plaintiffs and proposed class action members, which includes those whose data was accessed by Cambridge Analytica in the U.S.RELATED: Facebook whistleblower says more companies had access to user data"Contrary to Facebook’s assurances that Plaintiffs’ data would be protected, the [defendants], in the course of their unlawful conspiracy, accessed, harvested and sold the data of millions of individuals, including Plaintiffs, for, among other things, use in their efforts to undermine the democratic process during the 2016 U.S. presidential election," the lawsuit states.Encinitas firm Coast Law Group is among three firms representing the plaintiffs.Facebook has said Cambridge Analytica may have accessed data on about 87 million users, most of whom are in the U.S.RELATED: How to find out if you're giving Facebook access to calls, textsThe data was reportedly being collected by a professor for academic purposes, which is in line with Facebook's rules. However, it was later discovered that the information was transferred to third parties, including Cambridge Analytica, which is in violation of Facebook's policies.Cambridge Analytica was hired in summer 2016 as part of the Trump campaign's three-pronged data operation. Bannon served a vice president and secretary of the data firm until he stepped down in August 2016 to run President Trump's campaign. 2657

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The woman shot in the face with a bean bag round during a protest outside of La Mesa Police Department last month has been released from the hospital.Leslie Furcron, 59, was released from the hospital Tuesday, after an LMPD officer fired a bean bag round into a crowd of protesters on May 30, hitting Furcron in the forehead. She was hospitalized and placed in a medically induced coma with a breathing tube.RELATED: La Mesa protestor shot in the forehead by a police bean bag is recovering in the ICULa Mesa woman hospitalized following protests, family saysFurcron was among the thousands of people in front of the police department, where a demonstration against police violence started peacefully later turned to chaos and officers began to deploy tear gas and bean bag rounds.LMPD Chief Walt Vaquez said last week that the incident was under investigation and the officer involved had been identified.Furcron and her attorney, Dante Pride, are set to speak with the media during a press conference on Wednesday at La Mesa City Hall.Pride told 10News that he believes a third party should be investigating the case and the officer who fired the bean bag should face criminal charges if appropriate. "There should never be a point in time where an officer should shoot a metal projectile bean bag from an elevated position down on a crowd. That is dangerous and it can kill people and it almost killed Ms. Furcron," Pride says. 1456
