SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Every prom is memorable, but only one is truly an "Unforgettable Prom." Yet just like so many momentous occasions this year, the Unforgettable Prom had to be canceled. But its legacy lives on, touching lives 20 years later."Scott was an amazing young man. Sorry. He was very charismatic," says Carmen Delgadillo.Twenty years and Carmen Delgadillo still gets choked up talking about her son Scott. At 13, Scott Delgadillo was diagnosed with leukemia. He was determined to beat cancer because he was driven to one day attend Notre Dame, he was a fighter, and was surrounded by loyal friends who would always visit him in the hospital."Scott had a lot of friends that would come to visit, and some of the other kids did not. So, he would ask his friends, 'Hey, can you stop by and see my friend?' That's how Scott was; he brought people together," adds Carmen.Those same friends planned to take Scott to the Winter Formal that year. Unfortunately, Scott's sickness got worse, and he passed away shortly after. But his legacy was just beginning."Shortly after his passing, a nurse at Rady Children's Hospital, a nurse that took care of him, stopped me and asked if we would be interested in putting together a prom for the teenagers at Rady's Hospital," says Carmen.So, Carmen and Scott's friends got together and created the Friends of Scott Foundation. Teenagers with cancer and other illnesses, many too sick to attend their own proms, get the red-carpet treatment here at the Unforgettable Prom. Everything from the limos to the boys' tuxes, to the girls' gowns, and everything in between is taken care of for them."This is a way that they just forget about everything, and it's a free night from cancer. And we're very, very proud of this event," adds Carmen.But like most proms this year, the Unforgettable Prom had to be canceled. Instead, Carmen and the foundation are working to gather donations to create care packages for those teenagers suffering from illnesses and their families."We are providing gift cards, whether it be groceries or gas to help some of these families out during the pandemic," says a smiling Carmen.Now, 20 years later, Carmen Delgadillo and her volunteers have impacted and touched thousands of lives in the memory of her son Scott."I'd like to say how many lives have touched me," says Carmen. "Some of these kids are now parents. I've got to meet their children. They've gone on with their lives, some of these kids have gone on to college. So, all those lives that have been part of Scott and his legacy." 2566

"People apparently want to travel in spite of COVID."Whether it's to see an elderly family member, not break tradition, or make up for lost time, travelers packed the San Diego International Airport Thursday."They had to cancel Thanksgiving. They were coming home, and we didn't see them then, so we wanted to see them now," Miller's wife, Jan, said.Health officials have been warning for weeks that Christmas travel is like a 'Super Spreader' of the COVID-19 virus. Gatherings will cause a surge in the already short-staffed hospital systems, and that the death toll will increase. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Home sales in San Diego County accelerated in July after declining on an annual basis for more than a year.New data from real-estate tracker CoreLogic shows 3,988 home sales in July, up 10.1 percent from July 2018. That marks the first time since April 2018 that home sales in the county did not decline on an annual basis, when seasonal factors do not impact the data. Meanwhile, the median price for a home sold in the county remained flat over the year at 0,000. In June, the average rate for a 30-year-fixed mortgage fell to 3.8 percent, according to Freddie Mac. That was the first time the rate was below 4 percent since Dec. 2017. It ticked down even lower in July to 3.77 percent. Mark Goldman, a loan officer with C2 Financial, said the lower rates likely helped people increase their buying power by 2 to 3 percent. "That same house is going to cost a little bit less, and help you afford more," he said. "A lot of times when market gives you something like lower rates, the market takes it back in the form of higher prices, and we’re not really seeing that."Goldman said there is less speculation in the market due to concerns that it has leveled off. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Four rescued sea lion pups and a northern fur seal were released back into the ocean after rehabilitating at SeaWorld.The fur seal was rescued on Mission Beach on Dec. 30, 2019, and the four sea lion pups came into SeaWorld's care over the past two months. All the animals were malnourished and dehydrated, animal care experts said.During their rehabilitation, the animals doubled in weight and were given a clean bill of health by SeaWorld veterinarians. The animals' care givers also made sure the animals could demonstrate they were able to fend for themselves before they were returned to the sea.RELATED: SeaWorld sees high number of sea lion rescuesSeaWorld released the five animals about five miles west of Scripps Pier near La Jolla.Last month, the park released another four sea lions who were under their care back into the ocean.Since the start of 2020, SeaWorld says it has rescued nearly 20 sea lions and seals.SeaWorld told 10News in January that rescuers have seen an unusually large number — about three times the normal amount — of sea lion rescues this winter."The winter storms may be pushing schools of fish out further than seal lion pups can get to. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health experts are weighing in after a local nurse tested positive for COVID-19 more than a week after receiving the Pfizer vaccine.In a Facebook message posted on December 18, Matthew W., an ER nurse at at two different local hospitals, talked about receiving the Pfizer vaccine that day. He told ABC 10News his arm was sore for a day but he suffered no other side effects.Six days later on Christmas Eve -- after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit -- he became sick. He got the chills and later came down with muscle aches and fatigue.The day after Christmas, he went to a drive-up hospital testing site and tested positive for COVID-19."It's not unexpected at all. If you work through the numbers, this is exactly what we’d expect to happen if someone was exposed," said Dr. Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with Family Health Centers of San Diego. He serves on the clinical advisory panel for the county’s vaccine rollout.He points out, it is possible Matthew was infected before receiving the vaccine, as the incubation period may be as much as two weeks. Dr. Ramers says if Matthew did contract it after the vaccine, it’s still in line with what we know."We know from the vaccine clinical trials that it’s going to take about 10 to 14 days for you to start to develop protection from the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says he knows of several other local cases where health care workers became infected around the time they received the vaccine. He says all the cases illustrate the fact that results aren’t immediate. Even after you start receiving some protection, it won't be full protection."That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says Matthew’s story also shows that even with vaccines, the pandemic isn’t going to turn around instantly."You hear heath practitioners being very optimistic about it being the beginning of the end, but it’s going to be a slow roll, weeks to months as we roll out the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.He adds this case is a good reminder of why masks, handwashing, and other COVID protocols are important, even after receiving the vaccine.Matthew says he’s feeling better since his symptoms peaked on Christmas Day but still feels fatigued. 2323
