McDonald's hopes new breakfast items will draw more customers to the golden arches.The company announced Tuesday that it would expand its breakfast menu. The new items, along with local deals and low prices, should help "win back customers at breakfast," said CFO Kevin Ozan during a call with analysts.With the new items, McDonald's is aiming to reverse a troubling trend: American customers are eating elsewhere.Sales in the United States grew by 2.4% in the third quarter, but that was mostly because people spent more. The number of American customers declined.Over the past couple of years, McDonald's (MCD) has tried a number of different strategies to boost its US business. It put self-order kiosks in restaurants. It added new menu items. And McDonald's added delivery.That helped boost sales among existing customers. But those initiatives, part of a massive effort to modernize its US restaurants, haven't helped McDonald's hold on to existing customers or bring in new ones.The company believes a revamped breakfast menu could help."It's very competitive out there at breakfast," said CEO Stephen Easterbrook. "We're still losing a little share ... it continues to be a battleground," he said. "We want to do better at breakfast."McDonald's didn't offer details on what the new items will be.In recent years, Taco Bell has found success with its breakfast offerings. The chain started serving breakfast in 2014 and now sells items like the naked egg taco, which has a fried egg for a shell. Dunkin' (DNKN), which offers a two-sandwich deal for breakfast, has also done well in the morning.Competitors have upped their game and McDonald's may have "lost a little bit of ground" on breakfast over the past few years, said Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy.McDonald's has already made some changes that may entice new US customers. It added coffee and  breakfast sandwiches at some locations. Easterbrook said it's too soon to tell whether those efforts are paying off.Hottovy thinks that McDonald's has a good shot at turning around its fortune."With a little bit of focus," he said, McDonald's "can get right back in.""They've gotten better about product innovation," Hottovy added. Mack Beggs defended his Texas wrestling state title on Saturday by winning the girls Class 6A 110-pound class, to the chagrin of some of those in attendance in Cypress, Texas, the Dallas Morning News reported. Beggs, who was born female, is a transgender male who is only allowed to wrestle against girls. Texas' University Interscholastic League requires that athletes compete in the gender listed on their birth certificate. Beggs told the Dallas Morning News that he has not gone through any gender reassignment surgeries. But that did not stop those in the crowd from heckling Beggs. "They're saying 'steroids.' They're saying, 'Oh, they're beating up on girls,'" he told the Morning News. "It just comes down to technique and who has the most heart. I put too much blood, sweat and tears, I put too much B.S. into this journey that I wanted to come out on top."If Beggs had his choice, he would be competing against boys. "What can I tell people? I can tell the state legislature to change the policy, but I can't tell them to change it right now," Beggs told reporters. "All I can hope for is that they come to their [senses] and realize this is stupid and we should change the policies to conform to other people in my position."Among those who believe it was not a fair bout was Beggs' semifinal opponent Kayla Fitts, who went 52-0 as a senior for Cypress Ranch High School. "The strength definitely was the difference. I didn't anticipate how strong he was," Fitts told the Morning News."I understand if you want to transition your gender," she added. "I understand that totally. But there's a time and a place."Part of the issue has been that Beggs is taking a low dose of testosterone. MANHATTAN, N.Y. — Workers installed 192 new glittering Waterford crystal triangles on Times Square's New Year's Eve ball on Sunday in preparation for a pandemic-limited celebration on Thursday.The ball is a 12-foot-diameter geodesic sphere covered with more than 2,000 crystal triangles of various sizes. Some new crystals are swapped in every year. This year's addition features a new “Gift of Happiness” design represented by a sunburst of bright cuts radiating outward. The ball, blazing with more than 32,000 LED lights, will be dropped at 11:59 p.m. on New Year's Eve to ring in 2021.The Times Square celebration will be much smaller than usual because of the coronavirus pandemic. MARTIN COUNTY, Florida — The Martin County Sheriff's Office said a 28-year-old man faces poaching charges after deputies said he was caught with two gopher tortoises at a state park.Deputies responded Sunday evening to Seabranch Preserve State Park and found the suspect, identified as Robert Lane, on the ground.The sheriff's office said Lane pulled two endangered tortoises from their hole and was on the ground searching for others.Lane was in possession of a male and a female gopher tortoise when deputies caught him.They said he admitted to deputies that he pulled both of the tortoises from their hole and was going to take them home where he had planned to eat them.Gopher tortoises are a threatened species and federally protected.The case was turned over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Lane faces charges related to poaching on state property.Deputies said they found the hole where Lane pulled the tortoises from and returned both reptiles to the location.  1043
