A Mesa woman is taking action for her kids after claiming to notice an influx of scorpions at her apartment complex. Kayla Balodis, her fiancé, and two young children moved into an apartment complex at the Lakeview at Superstition Springs in Mesa six months ago.    During the walk-through, she says she found scorpions in the apartment, but the management told her it was likely just because the unit had been vacant for so long. When the family moved in; however, Balodis says they kept coming across more and more scorpions.   "It's like a nightmare; we're living in a nightmare. This place is basically infested. It's not just one or two. They're everywhere," said Balodis. She says she took her complaints to the front office, but didn't have much success."They kinda act like it's no big deal," she said.  The scorpions went away for the winter but have started to return now that the temperature is heating back up. So to prove her point, Saturday night Balodis and her fiancé went out with a blacklight and fishbowl to capture as many as they could.Balodis said they found them along the walls, on the roof, on the base of trees, and crawling up palm trees. She says within 20 minutes they had caught about 40 scorpions. Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix reached out to the front office and was told because of the holiday management couldn't answer any questions until Monday, but assured reporters that they handle each concern promptly.  Within an hour of the call, Balodis says she got an email from the front office telling her they'll reach out to pest control again and the situation will be taken care of.  But Balodis says the only thing she wants is to get out for the safety of her kids."I can't live like this; I'm afraid of the summer because we moved in September and we had an issue. I don't want to see what the summer is gonna look like," said Balodis. On Monday, KNXV returned to Balodis's apartment with a pest control expert for tips on how to insect-proof an apartment. Ryan Michel, with Defense Pest Control, says scorpions can fit through cracks the width of a credit card. "Your first line of defense is to make sure all windows and doors are sealed well. If you can see light through a crack, a scorpion can most likely get in through there," said Michel. Michel says the best thing to do to prevent scorpions are glue boards or “sticky boards” and to place them near entryways and near cracks where scorpions can enter.  2590

A second autopsy on the in-custody death of Adrian Ingram-Lopez concludes the way three Tucson Police Officers restrained him contributed to his death.An earlier autopsy by the Pima County Medical Examiner attributed Ingram-Lopez's death to cocaine intoxication and a heart condition.An autopsy commissioned by Eduardo Coronado, the attorney for Ingram-Lopez family concluded those conditions alone were not enough to have killed the man. It concluded officers continuing to hold Ingram-Lopez face down, handcuffed, and with officers putting their weight on his back led to “positional asphyxia”---inability to breathe because of body position.Police were about to fire Officers Jonathan Jackson, Samuel Routledge, and Ryan Starbuck when the three resigned.RELATED: TIMELINE: What happened after a man died while in TPD custodyThe TPD report which recommended firing the officers noted Ryan Starbuck had more extensive medical training than the other two. He is a licensed Emergency Medical Technician. The Arizona Health Department shows an EMT license for a Ryan Starbuck still active. TPD says Starbuck has been an EMT for 14 years.Police body cameras show, when other officers arrived, they recognized Ingram-Lopez was in medical distress and had him re-positioned to allow better breathing. Officers called an ambulance and administered an antidote for opioid overdose but that drug does not work on cocaine. Ambulance EMT’s pronounced Ingram Lopez dead.The family’s attorney hired a former Maricopa County Medical Examiner to do an independent autopsy. It conflicts with the Pima County Medical Examiner’s ruling on death.The Pima County report basically attributes the death to cocaine and a heart condition and mentions how Ingram-Lopez was restrained. It says, in part:“...the cause of death is ascribed to sudden cardiac arrest in the setting of acute cocaine intoxication and physical restraint with cardiac left ventricular hypertrophy as a significant contributing condition.”The alternative report says the cocaine and the heart condition were not serious enough to have killed by themselves. It puts more blame on how the officers restrained Ingram-Lopez and say, “his death is most consistent with asphyxia due to compromised airway which is best explained by a facedown position restricting his breathing.”Attorney Eduardo Coronado says instead of putting their weight on Ingram-Lopez back, officers should have realized he was co-operating and let him sit up and breathe.“What I can say is that there was a complete lack of empathy, a complete lack of humanity, a total disregard for his needs and just indifference, complete indifference.”Now the family says it wants a thorough criminal investigation of what the three former officers did and it’s considering a civil lawsuit.Report details TPD officer misconduct in death of Carlos Ingram-LopezKGUN's Craig Smith first reported this story. 2918

A South Florida man is accused of leaving multiple voicemails saying he would blow up a mosque days before Ramadan. The way officials found him? They checked caller ID.Dustin Hughes, 26, is alleged to have called Jamaat Ul Muttaqeen Mosque in Pembroke Pines, Florida, four times in a week. Hughes made the first call on May 5, claiming he had planted a bomb in the mosque and planned on detonating it, according to a federal complaint."I planted a bomb in your temple, I'm gonna blow your f------ temple up you f----- Muslim piece of s---," Hughes allegedly said in the first voicemail. A man was arrested for battery and disorderly conduct for allegedly spitting on a boy and telling him he “now has coronavirus.”Jason Copenhaver, 47, walked up to the boy on Sunday at a restaurant in Treasure Island, Florida. He asked the boy if he was wearing a face mask, according to the police report. The boy said yes, and Copenhaver told him to take it off and asked to shake his hand.The boy refused, according to police, then Copenhaver grabbed the boy’s hand and said “you now have coronavirus” while standing close enough to the boy for spit to land on his face.The police report also notes that Copenhaver was believed to be under the influence of alcohol, and tried to hit an employee at the restaurant who asked him to sit down. Staff was able to walk him outside and hold him on the ground until police arrived.Once in custody, Copenhaver told police he doesn’t know if he has coronavirus and has never been tested. 936

A superintendent in Wisconsin is investigating what he calls a "reprehensible" video showing two students appearing to mock the death of George Floyd. The video has sparked demands for action, and criticism that the Mequon-Thiensville School District needs to do more racism prevention and education.
