BEIJING, March 3 (Xinhua) -- A Taipei court has rejected here Tuesday former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's appeal against his detention and ordered that he be held in custody for a further two months, starting on March 26.     According to the island's law, a defendant whose maximum, basic, potential sentence is below ten years should not be held for more than three months during trial. If necessary, courts can prolong the detention for no more than two months every time. The detaining period can be prolonged for at most three times.     However, Chen Shui-bian was accused of many corruption charges and his most severe basic sentence could be life, which made the court consider prolonging his detention more than three times.     Chen was first detained on Dec. 30, 2008.     According to the resolution made Tuesday by the Taipei court, the charges against Chen were very severe, and he had repeatedly disturbed the judicial procedure to protect himself and delay the litigation.     "Under the current circumstances, it will be very hard to hold more trials if Chen Shui-bian is not detained," the court said in the resolution.     It added that since Chen was likely to destroy or change evidence and collude with witnesses, it wouldn't be effective enough to confine his living compared to detention. "Thus Chen's appeal for repealing the detention was rejected," it said.     Chen and his wife are accused of taking bribes worth 100 million New Taiwan dollars (29 million U.S. dollars) and 6 million U.S. dollars in a corporate land procurement, and the couple are also allegedly involved in deceivingly pocketing over 104 million New Taiwan dollars of special funds. Chen and his collaborators are also accused of laundering the illegal income.

BEIJING, April 4 (Xinhua) -- The industrial production of China's chemical sector increased 2.4 percent year on year in the first two months, and the falling trend for major product's output was eased, according to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Friday.     The figure was calculated based on the comparable working days in the first two months, since China's Lunar New Year holiday fellin February last year, but in January this year.     Zhu Hongren, official with the MIIT said although the output expansion was marginal, the contracting trend for the production of major chemical products was eased.     Of the major 30 chemical products monitored by the ministry, 21saw output falling in the first two months, but the falling rate was tempered from that in December. In addition, three products saw output get back to growth.     To support the annual "Spring Plough" season, the output of major three chemical fertilizer rose 4.6 percent to 8.75 million tonnes through January to February.     The pesticide production grew 9.1 percent to 394,000 tonnes in the first two months, and that for February alone jumped 14.4 percent.     Zhu Hongren said despite of the easing contraction, it was too early to be optimistic, citing the chemical industry faced the most difficult condition comparing with other raw material producing sectors.     China's industrial output rose 5.2 percent year on year in the first two months, with the growth slowing from December, MIIT said last week.     The figure was 0.5 percentage point lower than in December, dragged down by plummeting exports and high inventories, according to MIIT.     Experts said the figure showed Chinese industry was still feeling the pinch of the global downturn.

ISLAMABAD, April 18 (Xinhua) -- A 100-member-strong youth delegation of Pakistan is to leave for China on Sunday on a week-long visit as a program of boosting exchanges between the two friendly countries.     "The youths from all walks of life of Pakistan will have the chance to look at China and know more about China," said Charge d'Affairs Yao Jing of Chinese Embassy in Pakistan told youth delegation at a reception.     Chinese President Hu Jintao invited 500 young people from Pakistan to visit China within five years when he paid a state visit to Pakistan in November, 2006. The program was launched in 2007.     The program is aimed at "increasing mutual understanding" between the two countries and peoples, said Yao.     Ullah Saif Shervani, secretary of Pakistani Ministry of Youth Affairs, expressed the hope that the delegation members could take the opportunity to learn from "friendly China" and help enhance "time-tested friendship" between the two countries.     "I appreciate the Chinese government for the chance to visit," said Adil Taj, an university student in Islamabad. "We will work hard to make our own contribution to Pakistan-China friendship."     The youth delegation is scheduled to visit Beijing, Urumqi and Lanzhou from April 19 to 27.

The measures taken by the Chinese government to ensure economic growth also provide new opportunities for other countries, including Japan," Li said.     He hoped China and Japan to open a new cooperative era by jointly overcoming the current difficulties and contributing to the recovery of the world economy.     The spreading financial crisis has offered new chances for Japan and China to carry out higher-level cooperation, the Japanese Prime Minister said. The active measures adopted by China to stimulate its domestic demand are of significance for the recovery of the world economy, he said, adding that Japan was willing to enhance cooperation with China on the reform of international financial system and other regional and global issues.     Aso said the frequent high-level exchanges have quickened the paces for the improvement of bilateral ties and promoted the mutually beneficial cooperation. He also highly spoke of the various events held last year to commemorate the 30th anniversary of China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship.     Li is the highest-ranking official who visits Japan this year. Besides Prime Minister Aso, he also met with leaders of political parties and senior executives of the Japanese business community.
