A Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) High School teacher has been removed from the classroom, pending an investigation into an interaction with a Haitian student, in which the teacher refers to the country as “some third-world island country."A video of the incident was posted on the Facebook page of the student’s family and has received tens of thousands of views.In the video, you can hear the teacher talk to the student“It’s called a door, let me show you how it works,” the teacher said. “I don’t know how it works where you’re from, down in some third-world island country, where they don’t got them. Let me show you what it’s like in America.”“That was a racist comment,” said Haitian activist and radio host James Leger. “It’s hurtful and I’m hurt and the community is hurting.”Leger said his phones were ringing non-stop Thursday morning when he addressed the topic on his radio show.The family of the student said they first went to the school to address the issue but when no action was taken, they posted the video online.On Thursday morning, Palm Beach Gardens High parents got this call from the principal:“Hello Parents, this is Principal Larry Clawson. Many of you may have heard media reports of a video circulating of one of our teachers verbally interacting with a student in a potentially inappropriate manner. This call is to assure you I am aware of the video and the matter is being addressed by professional standards at this time. Because this is an open inquiry, I am not at liberty to share any additional details with you, but I wanted to assure you we have processes in place to review incidents like this.”Some former and current students are defending the teacher.“Great coach, great man, great father figure,” one person wrote.Others are saying the teacher was simply joking.“That man jokes all day. A team at the University of Kentucky is researching a possible treatment for COVID-19 and key helpers are three alpacas; Big Boy, Blue Eyes and Emperor.“It’s a powerful technology that we have at UK (University of Kentucky) and it’s something that hopefully we can develop some therapeutics with,” said Wally Whiteheart, a professor in the Department of Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry.Alpacas, along with llamas and camels, make a special kind of antibody called a nanobody. Nanobodies can be useful in cancer research and for other diseases. Researchers, led by Whiteheart and fellow professor Lou Hersh, are working with a nearby ranch to see what impact alpacas could have on COVID-19.“We, in a sense vaccinate them, and this case with viral proteins, and we make nanobodies to those viral proteins,” explained Whiteheart. “We can then go and purify and identify the nanobodies that bind to the virus and then test them to see if they can inhibit viral infection.”Making the nanobodies is just the first step. The team will see which, if any, can block virus infection and those candidates could move on to clinical trials.There’s still a lot of research and testing to go, and also still a lot of hope.“The cool thing which we’re exploring now is the fact that you might be able to use them as a nasal spray and this actually gets them to the place where the virus is affecting lung tissue,” said Whiteheart.This isn’t the first time the trio of alpacas has helped medical research. Big Boy, Blue Eyes and Emperor have contributed to the university’s nanobody research for more than three years. A postal worker's union says that USPS employees were not involved in an incident that led to several unopened mail bags dumped in two separate locations in Glendale, California, last week.On Thursday, KTLA-TV in Los Angeles obtained surveillance footage that showed a Budget rental truck pulling into the parking lot of Glendale spa.That morning, at about 5:40 a.m. local time, the truck pulled into the parking lot of 7Q Spa Laser & Aesthetics and began pulling bags of unopened mail and packages out of the truck. The truck later pulled away, leaving the mail behind.About two hours after the truck initially pulled up at 7Q, the Glendale Police Department received a call about a second large pile of mail that was found in an alley about a half a mile away.It's unclear if the two instances are related. The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that the Glendale Police Department had opened investigations into the incidents.On Tuesday, Omar Gonzalez, the Western Regional Coordinator for the American Postal Workers Union, told CNN that the person caught on surveillance footage dumping mail was a "contractor," and not a USPS employee.It's unclear how the mail made it on to a Budget rental truck.
