SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The EPA has announced several short-term projects to stop cross-border sewage spills in the Tijuana River Valley.For years, the area has been dealing with sewage spills and contaminated waters in the area, forcing the closure of local beaches.Some of the projects announced Wednesday include replacing nearly a mile of old leaking pike, improvement to the pumping systems to divert sewage flow away from the Tijuana River Valley, and replacing collectors that had repeatedly collapsed in the past.One of the grants will divert 10-million gallons of wastewater flow a day.Mayors from costal cities like Imperial Beach and Coronado and Border Patrol officials joined the EPA during their announcement, sharing how the contaminated waters have impacted their communities.As a result of these short-term fixes, Imperial Beach mayor Serge Dedina says the beaches are now open.EPA official say the money for these projects come from 2020 funding. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of San Diego approved a -million contract for a feasibility study and designs for a multi-purpose training facility for first responders.The contract was approved Wednesday by the Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Councilman Chris Cate said he is very excited about the opportunity, "the goal in this endeavor is to have a central location for both our firefighters and our police officers to have a viable long term solution for their training facility."Currently San Diego Police and Fire train at a facility just north of Terminal 2, at Lindbergh Field.Along with asbestos problems, the entire facility will come down to make way for the Pure Water San Diego Project, that will turn wastewater into drinking water."We have to be in construction before that because all of those guys have to be out of there," Cate said the deadline is 2027. He hopes by that time a permanent facility will be open for the first responders.Some of the items on the wish list, "classrooms, virtual simulations and testing/tactical obstacle courses, life-size training buildings, home simulations simulating burn scenarios, and many other necessary components required for a safe city."Cate said another important part of the process is weighing the opinions of neighbors, both in households, and businesses. One woman who works nearby said she's worried how much traffic a facility like that could bring.Cate is most concerned about police, fire and SWAT personnel, "it's incumbent upon us as policy makers to make sure that they have all the tools that they need to do their jobs very well for the public."The study is set to be completed by Summer 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Marine Corps reported an E.coli outbreak Tuesday among more than 300 troops at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.The diarrheal illness has affected 302 of approximately 5,500 recruits at the base. The cases had tapered off in the past week but a spike was reported Monday.Ten recruits were admitted to an off-base medical facility while the remainder are being cared for at MCRD. The source of the outbreak is under investigation, according to the Marine Corps."Our immediate focus is identifying, isolating and treating recruits who present symptoms," said Brig. Gen. William Jurney, commanding general, MCRD San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The National Weather Service is warning beachgoers ahead of the July 4 holiday about elevated surf and strong rip currents. A beach hazards statement will remain in effect until Friday at 3 a.m. According to the National Weather Service, waves will reach three to six feet accompanied by dangerous rip currents. “Remember to swim near a lifeguard if going out in the ocean,” said 10News meteorologist Megan Parry.
