CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A pedestrian died and others, including children, were injured Monday in a crash involving a construction truck in Chula Vista. The truck driver lost control about 1:15 p.m. in the 500 block of 4th Ave near Shasta Street, police said. The location is a residential street near Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista. The truck hit parked cars including a black pickup, which then struck a pedestrian before flipping over, said officers.Paramedics took the pedestrian to the hospital with critical injuries. The victim, an 81-year-old, later died, police confirmed. A mother and her two children, a baby and a girl, were in a parked car and suffered minor injuries. Chula Vista police are investigating the cause of the crash. At this time, police say it's unclear whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved. 844

(KGTV) – More than 300 South Bay parents and students attended a school safety forum Monday night.The Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista police held the meeting at Chula Vista High School’s Performing Arts Center.“We certainly had some questions, we pinged our kids on what drills are being done on their campuses,” said Ricky Gallegos, who has two kids that attend high schools in the district.School officials and police assured parents that they practice and prepare for the unthinkable. But police were also candid about their limited resources. They have 10 school resource officers for 61 campuses and more than 51,000 students in Chula Vista.  Police asked parents for their help by reminding them to be involved with their kids and school community and to report whatever doesn't sound right. They also told them about the “P-3 Anonymous Tip App” which was launched within the past year. They said it there have been more than 400 tips made and law enforcement removed 13 guns from San Diego County Schools as a result of the app.“I think it’s petty cool, especially that it’s anonymous because I know some students are worried that they’ll talk to someone else,” Leira Gardea, a sophomore at Chula Vista High School said.Mental health was also a big topic of discussion. The Sweetwater Union High School District says they have 13 therapists and assured parents they do their best to disturbed or troubled youth the help they need.Chula Vista Police is holding another school safety forum next week. (KGTV) -- The Port of San Diego and City of Chula Vista reached a milestone today, approving the financial agreement for the Chula Vista Bayfront resort hotel and convention center project."It's taken us 30 years to get to this day, and it's certainly worth it," Chula Vista Mayor, Mary Casillas Salas said. Officials also authorized a revenue-sharing agreement between the two agencies.The entire project will cost .1 billion. Of that, RIDA Developement will invest 5 million. The city and the port authority will pay for a combined 0+ million. Port commissioners said it is a large investment for an even larger long-term reward. "As far as what we'll get back, we will see an immediate impact by the fact that it's going to create 10,000 construction jobs, and it's going to put about a billion dollars in the local and regional economy," Moore said. RELATED: South Bay residents get an idea of massive bayfront developmentIn August of 2017, the City gave residents a better idea of what the Bayfront will look like in the next 20 years.The anchor for the Bayfront is set to be a .1 billion resort hotel and convention center that the city says will be built by Houston-based RIDA Development.The current Chula Vista RV Park will also move roughly a mile away to make room for construction. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) – Chula Vista police are investigating an overnight carjacking and kidnapping involving perpetrators disguised as law enforcement.The incident was reported just before midnight Tuesday in the Rancho Del Rey III neighborhood in East Chula Vista.Police said a group of men, armed with guns and wearing bullet proof vests, were driving in two white Ford Expedition SUV’s, which appeared to look like squad vehicles. Two people wearing vests with the word 'police' on the front ordered him to get out of his Renault Koleos SUV. Police said the victim believed the suspects had a gun. He got into one of their SUVs and was driven to Paseo Del Rey Park, located between Telegraph Canyon Road and East J Street. The suspects released the victim unharmed at the park, according to police.The victim walked 40 minutes to a residence on J Street to call 9-1-1, police said. He was not hurt in the incident, police said.The suspect vehicles and the stolen SUV are still outstanding, according to police.
