SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County was officially added to California's "monitoring list" as the number of coronavirus cases across the state increases, and Gov. Gavin Newsom said he expected local health officials to comply with specific orders that include the closure of indoor dining spaces. As of Monday afternoon, San Diego County joined five other counties on the monitoring list. The other counties added to the list: Colusa, Madera, Marin, Merced, and Monterey.Of the state’s 58 counties, 23 of them are on the state’s list.Ahead of the Fourth of July weekend, Newsom ordered counties that have been on the list for at least three days to shutter indoor operations at businesses such as restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, museums and cardrooms. In a tweet on his Twitter account, Newsom said:"CA is now asking Colusa, Madera, Marin, Merced, Monterey & San Diego to close indoor operations for:-Restaurants-Wineries-Movie theaters-Zoos, museums-CardroomsBars must close ALL operations."During his Monday news conference, Newsom said he was awaiting an order from local health officials in each of the newly-added counties to issue an order enacting the measures, which are expected to remain in effect for at least three weeks.Counties on the list were also ordered to close all of its bars, a move San Diego County had already taken ahead of the holiday weekend. The county issued a 10 p.m. curfew for restaurants.San Diego County health officials reported 1,030 positive COVID-19 cases over the weekend, bringing the region's total to 16,726.City News Service contributed to this report. 1619

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County Board of Supervisors held an emergency meeting behind closed doors Thursday evening to discuss how to potentially keep businesses open after Gov. Gavin Newsom denied removing San Diego State’s COVID-19 cases from the county’s total case rate. The meeting, though, yielding no new actions by the county. In a statement, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said since the board took no action, "it would be inappropriate to comment on the deliberation.""In general, I believe we should be fighting COVID-19 and not the state of California. We do not yet know what our case rate will be next Tuesday and will have to evaluate that number in order to understand any possible impact," Fletcher said. The county is now at risk of moving back to the most restrictive purple tier if the case rate is higher than 7.0 by next week. Currently, the county has had a case rate higher than that threshold for one week.“We were all really stunned and caught off guard yesterday during the governor’s press conference when he made a final decision on the SDSU cases,” said County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar.RELATED: Despite Newsom's dismissal, San Diego County wants SDSU's coronavirus cases nixed from case rateThe county had requested that the state remove SDSU’s more than 700 COVID-19 cases from the overall case rate to keep San Diego in the red tier. When asked about the situation during a press conference, Newsom said, “You can’t isolate, as if it’s on an island, the campus community that is part of a larger community. So the answer is no.”The county's public health officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, said if the school's cases were removed, the county's overall case rate would drop.“Businesses in Carlsbad are going to have to shut down because of an outbreak at San Diego State,” said Supervisor Jim Desmond. “Places throughout the county are going to be very negatively affected by this.”RELATED: What happens if San Diego County moves to California's most restrictive tierThe supervisors will meet to discuss options that could possibly keep San Diego County businesses operating in the red tier.“One option that we will be exploring is a legal action against the state of California, the governor specifically,” said Gaspar.Gaspar explained that option would allow the courts to hear the county’s case about why they believe SDSU’s situation is a special circumstance and not worth shutting down indoor operations again.“They would have the ability to evaluate whether or not SDSU cases should be excluded,” she said. “And in the interim period would allow us to stay in the stage red with the businesses open.”In a statement to ABC 10News, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said, 2699

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Padres games just got a little classier. The Padres hosted their inaugural "Anchorman" race at Petco Park Friday, featuring San Diego's favorite news team from Channel 4: Anchor Ron Burgundy, sports reporter Champ Kind, reporter Brian Fantana, and weatherman Brick Tamland. And by the beard of Zeus, Burgundy took the first race handily. RELATED: Padres unveil Ballast Point's Swingin' Friar AleThe race was created in collaboration with Paramount Pictures and actors Will Ferrell (Burgundy), David Koechner (Kind), Paul Rudd (Fantana), and Steve Carell (Tamland), according to the Padres. Each character is modeled after the "Anchorman" news team and it appears their trademark ego has gone to their heads. The massive heads were created by the same artist who modeled the Washington Nationals Racing Presidents and Arizona Diamondbacks Racing Legends characters.San Diego's race also joins the ranks of other races including the Milwaukee Brewers' sausage race and the Pittsburgh Pirates' pierogi race.RELATED: Brews outside Petco: Downtown breweries to visit before, after the gameAnyone else smell a street fight?Fans can expect to see the team race primarily on the weekends at Petco Park, as well as special games — it's kind of a big deal. The new "Anchorman" race is just the latest in new offerings at Petco, including a new beer created just for the team by Ballast Point, the Sycuan Stage concert venue at Park at the Park, and a revamped Compass Premier Club, the stadium's largest renovation since its 2004 opening. 1561

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County is gearing up to give out free sandbags ahead of expected heavy rains. County officials say it’s important to be prepared because topsoil, mud, plant material, and debris can clog culverts and storm drains and damage roadways. RELATED: Storm to bring heavy rainfall, possible flooding to San DiegoAhead of the storm, the county is making sandbags available for residents in unincorporated areas. “People should call ahead to double-check availability and remember to bring a shovel to fill the bags.
