Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has signed a landmark bill that retires the last state flag bearing the Confederate battle emblem. The Republican governor signed the bill Tuesday afternoon, just two days after legislators passed it. Amid international protests over racial injustice, Mississippi was under increasing pressure to lose a symbol that many see as racist. The state had used the flag since 1894. Mississippi will not have a flag for a while. A commission will design a new one that cannot have the Confederate symbol and must have the phrase, “In God We Trust.” Voters will be asked to approve the new design.The Confederate battle flag is losing its place of official prominence in the South 155 years after the end of the Civil War. Mykehia Curry is going to be the first member of her family to go to college, but she needed a little help to get there.The Macon, Georgia, teen took out student loans to pay for her tuition and housing at Albany State University, but she didn't have money for some of the things she'd need for her first time living away from home.Curry's mom is on disability, so money has been tight.On Saturday, just days before she was scheduled to leave for school, she asked God for help."I wrote a note that said 'God please help me get the rest of my stuff for college,'" Curry told CNN. "Then I said 'Amen, I love you God' and I wrote my name and number."She tied the note to three helium balloons leftover from her grandmother's birthday celebration and let them go."When I was writing the note, I was just trying to reach out to God. I didn't know where it would land," she said. "I thought that someone would pick it up and call me and tell me they got it or just throw it in the trash."The balloons flew about 15 miles northeast and carried the note to Gray, Georgia.That's where Jerome Jones, a Baptist minister, found it. Jones also works for Georgia Power and spotted the balloons on Monday while he was out on a job."I saw something shiny and floating, so I walked over there and I got it and it was balloons with a note tied to it," Jones told CNN affiliate WMGT. "They floated all night and they landed right in my hands, I mean, practically."He called Curry and offered to buy what she needed."He said they would love to help me out," Curry said. "I was so shocked and surprised."Jones and another member of his church brought her a comforter and refrigerator on Tuesday and now she's on her way to Albany State to get moved into her dorm.She said she plans to keep in touch with Jones and let him know how she's doing at school.Curry will be studying nursing and hopes to get a job on campus in a couple of months after she gets settled in with her classes."I am very excited to meet new people and start my journey and a new chapter in my life," she said. (KGTV) - Surveillance cameras captured a chain-reaction, hit-and-run crash in National City Tuesday morning.For Honey Mae Kenworthy, the remnants of her totaled car are hard to look at."I cried when I saw it," said Kenworthy.Surveillance video shows the last moments the 2003 Acura TL was undamaged, parked by her husband on Cleveland Avenue outside his work in an industrial park. Just past 7 a.m., a car speeds into frame and smashes into back of her car, pushing it into the car in front of it."Upset and angry whenever I see it ... he's obviously not paying any attention," said Kenworthy.After the crash, the gray car backs up and parks. The driver then gets out and starts picking up his car parts. After about 5 minutes, the man gets back in the car and drives off."Just an awful person for doing that. I felt robbed of my hard work ... had just paid of the vehicle," said Kenworthy.The driver didn't quite get everything. He left several parts, including a section of his right front bumper. Kenworthy says those parts belong to a Lexus, giving police a few more clues. Without an identification on the mystery driver, she's out of luck since she doesn't have comprehensive coverage. The car was likely going to be her 15-year-old son's first car."I feel really bad I might not have anything for him. Mourners lined up to pay their respects to Rayshard Brooks in a public viewing at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. A gold-colored coffin carrying the body of the man who was fatally shot by police arrived at the church just under an hour before the viewing was set to begin Monday. A handful of people were waiting outside well before the church opened. Officer Garrett Rolfe fatally shot Brooks in the back when Brooks fired a Taser in his direction while running away after a struggle on June 12. Rolfe is white. Brooks was Black. MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) - A gas company worker died and 15 people were injured Monday after a home exploded and caught fire in Murrieta, officials said. The explosion happened just after noon in a residential area of the Riverside County city near the intersection of Clinton Keith Road and Smith Ranch. Murrieta Fire crews went to the home on Wooden Horse Trail about 11 a.m. due to a report of a ruptured gas line and a gas leak, said Murrieta deputy fire Chief David Lantzer.The explosion happened just after noon, sending 15 people to the hospital. One SoCal Gas worker died."We are incredibly saddened that we have a loss of one of our employees today," said SoCal Gas public information officer Randon Lane.Firefighters fought flames for about two hours after the blast.
