SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As President Trump and Democratic lawmakers battle over funding for the president's border wall project, construction at the border is already slated to begin early this year.Texas-based construction company SLSCO was awarded 7 million last month for a series of wall projects along the U.S.-Mexico border in California beginning in February. The contracts include up to 14 miles of secondary wall and 15 miles of primary pedestrian replacement wall in the San Diego, Yuma, and El Centro sectors.A Border Patrol spokesperson said construction of a primary pedestrian wall was already approved, though could not comment as to whether secondary wall construction was previously approved or tied directly to President Trump's Executive Order for a continuous border wall.RELATED: Roughly 150 migrants attempt to climb border fence, throw rocks at Border Patrol agentsIn February 2019, construction on 14 miles of secondary wall will start adjacent to San Diego's primary fence replacement project that is currently underway. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol officers played the part of Santa Claus for one little girl who made a very big difference this summer.The lights were flashing and Christmas music was blasting through the loudspeaker as officers drove downtown toward 4-year-old Leilani's home.Leilani and her dad Lydell Short met them on the sidewalk.One officer walked up, crouched, and asked Leilani in a soft voice if she remembers them.She nodded.She and her dad met the officers last summer during a Black Lives Matter protest. Short said they heard a commotion outside and saw the line of officers near a crowd of protestors."She's always telling me she wanted to be a police officer or whatnot, so I asked them if it would be okay if she took a picture with them," he said.She high-fived and smiled with officers.A moment of kindness that left an indelible mark and brought so many people together during a tense time.Back at Leilani's home, Christmas gifts from the officers started flowing, including a barbie car, dinosaurs, a doctor doll, and most coveted, a brand new bicycle and scooter."We got a lot of stuff!!" Gavin Newsom closing beaches where coronavirus numbers are rising. But the family took the chance that San Diego beaches would stay open.“We figured this morning we got the kids up. OK, let’s take a chance; either we can get to the beach or we can’t. If not, there’s a pool at the hotel,” Edward Cotus said.Law enforcement agencies said they will be out this weekend reminding people about the rules. However, they say it will be up to the public to follow them.The Cotus family said they understand why people don’t like wearing the face coverings, but they believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to do their part in controlling the spread of this virus.“We all have to be responsible and just try to really implement social distancing on our own.
