NEW ORLEANS — A fast-moving Zeta has weakened to a tropical storm as it barrels northeast after causing havoc along the Gulf Coast. The storm raged onshore Wednesday afternoon in the small village of Cocodrie in Louisiana as a strong Category 2 and then moved swiftly across the New Orleans area and into neighboring Mississippi. The National Hurricane Center says strong and damaging wind gusts will continue to spread well inland across portions of Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia on Thursday. This could cause widespread tree damage and power outages.Nearly 2 million homes were already without power across several southern states before dawn Thursday. According to the website PowerOutage.us, about 1.8 million are without power in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Georgia has the most with more than 800,000 in the dark.Officials have made a repeated call for residents to stay inside after the storm passed and not go outside in the dark to assess damage.Throughout Thursday, NHC says heavy rainfall is expected near and in advance of Zeta in portions of the central Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic and lower to middle Ohio Valley. It may lead to flash, urban, small stream and isolated minor river flooding. At least two deaths have been blamed on the storm, one of which died from electrocution in New Orleans.Hundreds of schools canceled classes or planned to open late across from the Gulf Coast to the Carolinas. In the Mississippi city of Waveland, Mayor Mike Smith told WLOX-TV that he was expecting to see a lot of damage in the morning. In Louisiana, Gov. John Bel Edwards was expected Thursday to tour the coastal regions hardest hit by the storm. 1687

NEW YORK (AP) — NFL end zones will be inscribed this season with two slogans: "It Takes All Of Us" on one end line, "End Racism" on the other. As part of its social justice awareness initiatives, the NFL also will allow similar visuals on helmets and caps.Previously announced were decals on the back of helmets, or patches on team caps, displaying names or phrases to honor victims of racism and/or police brutality. Now, a T-shirt designed by NFL Players Association executive committee member Michael Thomas, a safety with the Houston Texans, can be worn in warmups. The shirts will say “Injustice against one of us is injustice against all of us,” on the front and the back will read: “End racism,” The Associated Press reported. As previously reported, the league is reportedly planning to feature the song "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," traditionally known as the Black national anthem, during the pregame of Week 1 games. 930

NEW YORK CITY — A New York City mom allegedly threw her newborn son out of a bathroom window, District Attorney Melinda Katz said Tuesday. Sabina Dookram, 23, was charged with attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, assault and reckless endangerment.“This is a heartbreaking situation," Katz said. "A newborn baby has suffered greatly because of the alleged actions of his mother, who now faces serious charges and a lengthy prison sentence."A neighbor heard crying sounds on Sunday morning, officials said. When she went outside, she found a naked newborn boy on the ground next to the building's garbage. Responding officers found blood on the ground, on the side wall leading up to the bathroom window and on the window sill. The baby was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Katz said. He was placed on a ventilator. Doctors determined he suffered a traumatic brain injury with bleeding and swelling about the brain and scalp and an abdominal injury with internal bleeding.Dookram gave birth on Saturday afternoon, prosecutors said she told officers."I cut the cord with a scissor from the bathroom," Dookram said according to court documents. "I panicked and threw it out of the bathroom window. I did not check on the baby, I put my clothes in the laundry hamper in the bathroom, I showered and went to sleep.”Dookram faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio grabbed a roller Thursday and helped paint the words "Black Lives Matter" front of the namesake Manhattan tower of President Donald Trump.De Blasio was flanked by his wife, Chirlane McCray, and the Rev. Al Sharpton as he helped paint the racial justice rallying cry in giant yellow letters on Fifth Avenue in front of Trump Tower."We are liberating Fifth Avenue," de Blasio said. "We are uplifting Fifth Avenue."The NYC Department of Transportation closed off the avenue between 56th and 57th streets around 7 a.m. Thursday in preparation for the painting. The DOT said the block would remain closed to automobile traffic until Sunday, however, the bus lane will be operational sooner. The mural was originally set to be painted on July 2, but was postponed due to "logistics," de Blasio said at the time. Your 'luxury' came from THEIR labor, for which they. have never been justly compensated.""We are honoring them. The fact that you see it as denigrating your street is the definition of racism," his tweets read. This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom, Anthony DiLorenzo, Andrew Ramos on WPIX in New York. 2476
