LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - A Monterey Cypress known as the “Dr. Seuss Tree” or “The Lorax Tree” toppled over early Thursday morning in La Jolla.The unique shaped tree has been theorized to be the inspiration for the colorful trees in “The Lorax,” written in 1971 by Theodor Geisel, known best as "Dr. Seuss."Geisel lived in La Jolla from 1948 until he died in 1991. The tree is located in Ellen Browning Scripps Park near La Jolla Cove.The tree had become a tourist destination for Seuss fans around the world, with its long, drooping branches and leaves.As of Thursday night the tree was still lying on the ground. Joe Biden will meet with top Democratic lawmakers on Friday, his first meeting with Congressional leadership since his projected win in the 2020 election.Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris will meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer at Biden's transition headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware. The four will meet in private and may speak to the media afterward.The incoming Biden administration will face several challenges after his inauguration, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic. Unemployment is once again on the rise as cases across the country spike, and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are under immense pressure to strike a deal on a stimulus package — something they have been unable to do since March.Biden is also days away from unveiling his picks for cabinet positions, which require Senate confirmation. Depending on the outcome of two January runoff elections in Georgia, Biden may face an uphill battle in seating his cabinet, as Republicans may control the chamber.The president-elect is also facing resistance from President Donald Trump, who has not yet begun the transition process and is in the midst of an unprecedented push to overturn the results of the election. KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Memorial Day travel may be more difficult in 2018 than it has been in more than a dozen years, according to AAA.The company released its 2018 Memorial Day travel forecast ahead of the holiday known as the informal kickoff to summer.AAA said 2018 will see a near-record number of travelers, with more than 41.5 million people expected to take a trip.That’s nearly 5 percent more than 2017, with an additional 2 million people traveling in planes, trains and cars.According to INRIX, a global transportation analytics company, travel delays could be up to three times longer, becoming especially bad on the Thursday and Friday before the holiday as travelers mix with work-week commuters.Most travelers will take a car to their destination — 36.6 million to be exact. Airlines will see 3.1 million people, and the 1.8 million remaining will take trains, buses and cruise ships.Despite higher gas prices, travelers are still hitting the road. They will pay the most expensive Memorial Day weekend gas prices in four years.One contributing factor to peoples’ willingness to travel despite the price hike could be that airline and rental car costs are expected to dip this Memorial Day weekend, making up for the increased cost.Airfare is down 7 percent in price, and the average daily cost of a rental car is the lowest it’s been in four years.AAA released a list of the top 10 Memorial Day travel destinations, with Orlando at #1. 1463
J.J. Watt, a star defensive end for the Houston Texans, has offered to pay for the funerals of the victims of Friday's school shooting at Santa Fe High School, NFL.com reports.Ten people were killed in the shooting on Friday morning, and another 10 were injured. A suspect is in custody and has reportedly confessed to the shooting. He's being held without bond on capital murder charges.This wouldn't be the first time Watt has stepped up for the greater Houston community in the face of tragedy.
