Life expectancy in America is down for the third year in a row. One of the reasons is because more people are dying by suicide.At just 27 years old, Ashlynne Haycock has faced a series of unimaginable tragedies.Her dad died while on active duty with the Army. Years later, her mother, who was also a veteran, died by suicide.“It’s not about wanting to die,” Haycock says. “It’s about not wanting to be in pain any longer, and my mom was in a lot of pain from her own military service, from losing my dad, from being alone. She struggled.”The suicide rates in the US are now at their highest levels in 50 years, according to the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention (CDC). The numbers have jumped so much, suicides are partly to blame for a drop in US life expectancy.Most Americans now live an average of 78 years and six months, a slight drop from last year and lower the third year in a row.“I think, we as country, really need to focus on making suicide prevention a public health issue,” Haycock says. “Making sure that it’s something people know if they get treatment, treatment works.” Sadly, Haycock learned that first-hand.“I attempted suicide myself after my mom died, and my friends got me treatment,” Haycock says. “And I’m so grateful every day that I didn’t succeed.”Now, Haycock works for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, an organization that supports military families who have lost loved ones, including those in so much pain they took their own lives. 1514

(KGTV) - A man went on a towering mission up a pole, a day after vandals left their mark at an American Legion post in La Mesa, including the burning of a flag.Just before 8 p.m. Saturday, a burning American flag was recorded being hoisted up a pole at American Legion Post 282. Before the night would end, vandals would also tag walls and shatter windows there. But it was the image of the burning flag that sent Cory into action after he saw the video Sunday morning."Really got me sad and upset at the same time," said Cory.A short time later, Cory was spotted on a flag pole outside the American Legion post, after a drive from his home in Lakeside. The CrossFit enthusiast making that 60-foot climb, quickly."My wife said, 'It was the look in my eye. Something I had to do,'" said Cory.After shooting to the top, Cory would thread a new rope he brought along, before going back down and hanging the new flag, an extra one he had been storing in his home. Cory isn't in the military but has family and friends who have served."Everyone has a right to protest, but I think it went too far when they disrespected the flag," said Cory.A short time later, Post Commander Jack Porath heard about Cory's lofty feat."I could not have been more proud of someone doing that," said Porath.For Porath, his emotional compass did a complete 180. After a night of heartbreak caused by the vandalism, he discovered some newfound optimism. In the middle of our interview with Cory, Porath phoned in. They spoke for the first time."What you did was wonderful and courageous. My hat is off to you," said Porath."Just me doing my part. We appreciate what you and other veterans have done. Just a small thing we can do to show that," answered Cory. LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A body was recovered in the ocean off a Southern California beach in the same area where a person was found dead in the water a week earlier. A search was launched Friday following reports of a missing swimmer in the Table Rock area of Laguna Beach. It wasn’t immediately known if the person found dead on Saturday is the swimmer reported missing the previous day. It’s the third death along Orange County’s coastline in the past week. (KGTV) - The family of an 11-year-old boy who was killed in the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka held a celebration of life ceremony in Lakeside Wednesday night.They gathered on a trail in Oak Oasis County Park to remember Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, on what would have been his 12th birthday.About a mile down the trail, they unveiled a new bench with a plaque in his memory, telling future hikers to “Be like Kieran.”“Kieran’s mindset was always about helping others,” said Alex Arrow, his father who lives in Lakeside.“He was the greatest ray of light that my life has ever seen,” said Dhulsini de Zoysa, Kieran’s mother.Both parents described him as curious, intelligent and empathetic.“He was just a sponge. He took in everything regardless of the topic,” said his mother.Arrow said his son had dreams of becoming a neuroscientist, with the goal of finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. “I also grieve for what the world lost,” said Arrow. “That piece of shrapnel from the suicide bomber struck down a future champion against the unknowns of the brain.”In total, 259 people were killed in a series of coordinated bombings on April 21 in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. 1202
