SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego family of a Los Angeles firefighter who may have been kidnapped in Rosarito, Mexico, is speaking out. It’s been more than two weeks since 20-year veteran LA City firefighter Frank Aguilar was last seen after heading to his second home in Baja, California.“We’re hopeful. We haven't lost hope,” his local cousin Nancy told ABC10 News. She’s only providing a first name, due to safety concerns. “Nobody seems to know anything and it's very frustrating for the family to not know anything."On Wednesday, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that his office learned from Mexican authorities that the 48-year-old firefighter may have been violently kidnapped from his Baja condo. “We will work tirelessly to make sure that Frank is returned safely,” he said in a news conference."[The mayor] did mention that he is going to provide all resources from Los Angeles to help get my dad back,” said daughter Amaris Aguilar.“I had just spoken to my dad the morning that we discovered he was missing. When he left for Rosarito, he was describing how safe or how good he felt in that community. He wanted to retire there,” added daughter Bella Aguilar. The daughters say that his condo was in a guard-gated community. His family has told reporters that his phone is off and they've heard that his condo may have been ransacked, his vehicles are missing and Ring video shows a troubling scene.“We're going to get you back. I love you so, so much,” added Amaris.Late Thursday, the San Diego FBI spokesperson sent ABC10 News the following statement:"The FBI is in contact with its Legal Attache located at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City regarding the Los Angeles fireman reported missing. The FBI routinely offers assistance to our Mexican counterparts who have jurisdiction over this situation as it occurred in Mexico. The FBI is providing assistance and resources as requested by our Mexican law enforcement partners. I will refer you to the Mexican authorities for any status on the investigation as they are the lead." 2042

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The trial of the Navy veteran accused of stabbing his wife, then dumping her body into the San Diego Bay, got underway today at San Diego Superior Court. Matthew Sullivan sat quietly next to his lawyers, nearly four years after the gruesome discovery of his wife, 32-year-old Elizabeth Sullivan. "She said, 'Hold on a sec.' And then she said 'I got to go,' quietly, and I didn't hear from her anymore," Calandra Harris said while wiping her tears. Harris described herself as Elizabeth's best friend. The two met while working together at Hampton University in Virginia. She said the last conversation she ever had with Elizabeth was on the day before she went missing in October 2014. Despite living on opposite coasts, Harris said she and Elizabeth talked every day. Harris said Elizabeth often consulted her about her tumultuous marriage with her husband. Both husband and wife filed domestic violence charges against each other, and the couple slept in separate rooms in the same Liberty Station home. So when Elizabeth went missing, Harris said she was worried, especially when she saw Sullivan's new Facebook post. "I noticed that he posted that he was in a relationship with Kay Taylor," Harris testified. "And when did you see that?" Deputy District Attorney Jill Lindberg asked. "Less than 30 days after and Liz was missing," Harris said. In October 2016, on the same day that Matthew was moving to Maryland with his new girlfriend and children, Elizabeth's decomposed body was discovered floating in the San Diego Bay. At this time, Matthew was not a suspect. But after months of investigating, police found blood underneath the carpet, and a knife hidden in the insulation of the Liberty Station home the couple once shared. "They can see blood in some of the crevices, down where the blade comes out of the handle and the bolts on the side," Lindberg said while displaying the knife to the jury. "They checked it, and they found Elizabeth's DNA and blood. A tiny bit of the defendant's, mostly the victims."The defense team agreed that the blood was Elizabeth's. But they said the mother of two, who had infidelity issues and abused drugs and alcohol, hurt herself. "Elizabeth had broken a mirror," Defense Attorney Marcus DeBose said. "Taking a large shard of glass out of the mirror, she inflicted a deep wound. She was bleeding profusely all over the third-floor bedroom."Both the prosecution and defense teams will call on additional witnesses starting Monday. 2504

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There are currently 34 active COVID-19 outbreaks at skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) across San Diego County.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, said from March 25 to Aug. 18, there were hundreds of cases reported at SNFs.“We have 86 skilled nursing facilities throughout the County of San Diego. In total, there have been 788 residents, and 515 staff members with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and this includes 153 deaths,” she said Wednesday. It’s a trend across the country, and as the nation deals with the pandemic, SNFs are reporting financial hardships.A recent survey by the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living of 463 nursing home providers across the nation revealed that many say they’re facing a financial crisis.More than 55% reported operating at a loss, while 72% said they won’t be able to sustain operations for another year at the current pace. The report shows that most of the financial troubles were linked to the increase in costs due to COVID-19, including additional staffing, more personal protective equipment (PPE), and testing.“It could have and should have been avoided by simply adequately staffing and having appropriate PPE,” said Mike Dark, an attorney with California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform. For decades, the nonprofit based in San Francisco has fought for rights and better conditions for long-term care residents and their families in California.“At the beginning of this pandemic, nursing homes across the country had such terrible staffing and such thin PPE simply because money wasn’t being spent where it should have been,” said Dark. “It’s really up to the regulators to understand all the different sources of profit for nursing home owners and to make sure that when they hear that there’s just not enough money to pay for staffing or PPE, they really understand where those taxpayer health subsidy dollars are going.”He said the issues have been going on long before the pandemic. To avoid a disastrous situation in the future, Dark says changes need to be made at SNFs across the country immediately.“What nursing homes need to do, is staff up, train their staff, and make sure staff are adequately paid. Until that happens, we’re going to see this disease continue to spread.” 2317
