NEW YORK, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States will continue to pursue the common interest without being affected by the recent changes of the U.S. political landscape, said a U.S. scholar on Friday."There is a lot of consistency in China-U.S. relations. If you look back over time, whether it is Democrats or Republicans in the Congress or in the White House, China has always been an important country for the United States. Both countries will continue to pursue the common interest," said Elizabeth Wishnick, Research Associate at Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University.She told Xinhua in an interview that it would be difficult to see major changes occurring between U.S.-China ties after the U.S. midterm elections, because both countries share so many common interests in terms of preventing the nuclear proliferation weapons and reducing the problems of terrorism, etc."Keep in mind the long-term interests we share and the long history of cooperation we have, China and U.S. will find ways to move forward and have good possibility for future cooperation," she stressed.Wishnick admitted that it is a difficult time right now for U.S. and China, because "the economy is pulling both nations in different directions and no solution has been worked out yet to resolve the pressing economic problems that divide us.""It's a challenge for us to keep focus on what can be accomplished bilaterally, instead of getting too distracted by pressing current problems. BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ministry of Public Security said Monday that the nation's police authorities had shut down 500 underground banks since 2002 in its battle against money laundering.Ten crack-down campaigns have be waged since 2002 when the ministry set up a division dedicated to anti-money laundering, in which over 100 cases involving more than 200 billion yuan (30 billion U.S. dollars) have been handled, the ministry said in a statement.The ministry has trained more than 400 police officers specialized in handling money laundering cases over the past eight years, said the statement.In order to promote international cooperation, China joined the Moscow-based Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism as a founding member state inn October 2004.In June, 2007, China joined another international anti-money laundering organization, the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force on Anti-Money Laundering.

TIANJIN, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A subway train of six cars being assembled rolled off a production line Friday at a production base in north China's Tianjin Municipality, according to China South Locomotive & Rolling Stock Corporation (CSR).The subway train is the first of the kind ever produced at the CSR Tianjin Industrial Park, said CSR's chairman, Zhao Xiaogang.The train, designed to run at a speed of 80 km per hour, has a holding capacity of 1,800 passengers. It will will be used in Tianjin's Subway Line 3, which will begin service in 2011.The production base, with an initial investment of 3 billion yuan (455 million U.S. dollars), can produce 100 to 200 trains a year. It will attain a capacity of producing 500 trains annually in the next five years, according to Zhao.Analysts say the base's first product marked Tianjin's efforts to encourage the development of modern and more advanced industries in the city.The production base will boost the development of emerging industries in Tianjin and contribute to China's economic transformation, Zhao said.CSR, a state-owned company with more than 80,000 employees, produces about 70 percent of all high-speed trains China.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its hope that parties in the north and south Sudan will make continuous efforts for a peaceful, free, transparent and just referenda in Sudan in accordance with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), and called for international efforts to create favorable conditions for the January referenda.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counsellor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was addressing an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."We hope the north and south Sudan will keep up the momentum, speed up the preparation for the referenda and ensure that the referenda are conducted in a peaceful, free, transparent and just manner in accordance with the CPA," Yang said.A referendum on self-determination for southern Sudan is scheduled to be conducted on Jan. 9, 2011, as it was stipulated in the CPA inked between north and south Sudan in 2005, which ended a two-decade civil war between the two sides."We call on the international community to create a favorable condition for the referenda and refrain from prejudging the outcome," he said. "No party should take unilateral action. No matter what outcome of the referenda might be, peace and stability in Sudan and the region must be ensured."Inhabitants of the south will vote on Jan. 9, 2011 on whether to secede from Sudan or remain united with the rest of the country. On the same day, residents of Abyei, located in the center of the country, will vote separately on whether to retain Abyei's special administrative status in the north or become part of Bahr el- Ghazal state in the south.Since the Security Council held the high-level open meeting on Sudan last month, the peace process in Sudan continues to register positive progress, Yang noted."Voter registration for the referenda for southern Sudan has been concluded smoothly, we commend the north and south Sudan, the African Union and the UN Secretariat for the efforts to this end," he said."Maintaining the peace, stability and development in Sudan is in the interest of the Sudanese people, and it is also conducive to the peace and development in the region and in the African continent," Yang said."China hopes that the north and south will cherish the peace that was hard to come by, and continue their equal dialogue and consultation in order to reach an early agreement on the border demarcation, Abyei and wealth sharing and other outstanding issues, " he said.
