EL CAJON (KGTV): It's become as much a back-to-school tradition as new pencils and notebooks; new buildings and construction at Grossmont Union High School District campuses."We're bringing everything up," says Mount Miguel Principal Jake Gaier. "These students will walk in the door and have access to things that we just haven't had access to before."His school is set to open a new Student Services Center, where state of the art facilities await students and parents as they register for class or meet with guidance counselors. They're also getting a new public events center and turning the old administration building into a STEM complex.The work at Mount Miguel is part of 9 million worth of upgrades that have been underway in the district since 2004. Since then, a trio of voter-approved bonds has helped GUHSD upgrade their aging campuses, some of which date back to the 1950s.In 2004, Proposition H gave the district 4 million. Proposition U in 2008 added another 7 million. And Measure BB in 2016 gave the district 8 million. To date, the district has spent 1 million of that money.Every school has benefited from the bonds, with some campuses getting work done on every single building.At Santana High School, a new PE building will open this spring. They also renovated STEM labs, giving their award-winning robotics program its own space, and adding an observation balcony for visitors to watch the kids work without disrupting them.Principal Tim Schwuchow requires that every student join an extracurricular activity. He says the new facilities reinforce the connection between academics and electives."The kids will really feel they're valued and their extracurricular activities are important to the school," he says.Granite Hills is also getting a new PE Building. It will be combined with a new Food Services building."We serve 700 meals a day," says Principal Mike Fowler. "The kitchen we use was built in 1960. It's too slow."Construction crews started pouring the concrete foundation earlier this month. Fowler says the new facility will be a game changer for his students, allowing the building to keep pace with changing curriculum.It can also be used in case of emergency as a community evacuation center.Those three schools have been the focus on construction this summer. Since may, Granite Hills has gotten .5 million in work done. Mount Miguel has received .7 million. Santana got .4. EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. -- You can't even step foot inside Paul and Jenny Fisch's home without wearing a breathing mask. Their dream home was destroyed after they thought the house was sold."I mean, there was just no words... the feces and the urine spread all over our white cabinets, all over our hardwood floor, it was even on the ceiling - 10-foot ceilings," said Jenny Fisch, the homeowner.The Fischs put their home on the market for 0,000 and the first offer they received was for full asking price. The deadline came and went without the buyers closing on their home even though they were already living in it."What do we do? The only thing we have left to do is start an eviction," said Paul Fisch.The couple even attempted to work out a new deal with the would-be buyers so they could continue renting and eventually purchase the home. The buyers stopped paying rent and they had no choice but to evict them. It wasn't a quick process. Paul and Jenny Fisch weren't prepared for what they were about to find when they showed up to their home with a sheriff's deputy to finally kick the people out."When she walked out her face was like, 'it's bad," said Paul Fisch.Floors were covered in urine, there was feces everywhere and the smell was overwhelming. The house was absolutely filthy and completely trashed."And I lost it, I just lost it. I was like, 'I don't understand why we have to go through this.' I mean we hired people and now my beautiful dream home is covered in feces and I don't know how we're going to fix it," said Jenny Fisch.The buyer was pre-approved for a loan but only if he completed a program and improved his credit score. The lender said that never happened. This information was not made available to the Fischs and they only found out after the deal fell through.The couple said their agent and the buyer's agent assured them everything was good when they agreed to let the buyers rent. RE/MAX, the buyers realtor, said through a spokesperson that realtors don't qualify buyers and it is up to the lender."It's their fault and nobody wants to help us," said Jenny Fisch.The Fischs tried to filed a report with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office but they were told it was a civil matter. They also attempted to contact Child Protective Services because a child was in the home as well as animal control because seven dogs and three cats were found inside.It gets worse. Their insurance won't cover the damage. A spokesperson for Auto-Owners Insurance said they had no comment on the situation.Now the couple is paying a mortgage on a home they can't live in and trying to figure out how to come up with the funds to pay for repairs. The would-be buyers are nowhere to be found and a reporter has not been able to make contact with them."It was insane to me how somebody could live in such a nice home and in a matter of months, destroy everything," said Paul Fisch. 3362

EL CAJON (CNS) - A man and woman were sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2017 shooting death of a man in a botched holdup in the parking lot of a Burlington Coat Factory store in La Mesa, in which they made off with cash and three pairs of shoes taken from the victim. Derrick Eli Henderson, 32, and Kathryn Luwana Williams, 26, were convicted in July of murder and robbery charges for the death of 30-year-old Travis Lewis, who was gunned down on July 20, 2017, outside the Burlington Coat Factory store at 7938 El Cajon Blvd. Jurors deliberated for about two days before convicting Henderson and Williams of the killing, and finding true a special circumstance allegation of committing the killing in the commission of a robbery. The defendants met up with Lewis under the guise of purchasing marijuana from him -- a scheme orchestrated by Williams, who called the victim to arrange the meeting and brought Henderson along as muscle, according to Deputy District Attorney Kristian Trocha. RELATED: Man dead in shooting in front of Burlington Coat Factory store in La MesaThe prosecutor said that upon arrival, Henderson pressed a gun to Lewis' neck and fired in broad daylight, then dumped the gun in a planter near the store. Williams then took shoes the victim had just bought out of the trunk of his car and rifled through Lewis' pockets and took cash as he lay bleeding in the parking lot, but left behind marijuana that he had in his vehicle, Trocha said. In his closing argument, Trocha told the jury that Williams was ``just as responsible as if she pulled the trigger herself.'' Co-defendant Tiesha Miller-Johnson, 34, pleaded guilty to robbery and is slated to be sentenced later this month. Prosecutors said she was the getaway driver. Henderson's attorney, Yahaira Aristy, denied that he was the shooter, while the prosecution claimed that Henderson's DNA was found on the gun and that he told someone else that he ``domed that dude'' when talking about the robbery. Aristy also disputed testimony from Williams that after the shooting, Henderson threatened to kill her if she didn't take Lewis' belongings or if she told anyone about what happened. Williams' attorney, Shervin Samimi, said his client was only there to buy marijuana, and alleged the prosecution was stretching with its claims that she crafted a scheme to rob Lewis. 2397
