BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Barack Obama sent messages respectively to the United States' National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) Thursday, wishing its performance in China a success.     "I am pleased to extend my warm welcome to all the visiting artists from the United States," Hu said in the message. He recalled the NSO's first visit to China in 1999, saying it "left a beautiful impression to the Chinese audience."     Hu hailed the Symphony's second visit to China at the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-U.S. diplomatic relations. He said music can help to "refine sentiment of humankind and promote communication between people's hearts of different countries."     "I believe that music from across the Pacific Ocean will enhance the mutual understanding between our two peoples and certainly write a new chapter in the long run of friendship between us," Hu said.     He also wished the performances of the NSO a great success.     In his message, Obama extended a heartfelt welcome to all those attending this performance of the NSO as it tours the People's Republic of China for the second time.     "Music has been called a universal language, " said Obama. "It has the potential to build inter-cultural bridges, forge new relationships among peoples and nations, strengthen our understanding of history and tradition, and enrich our lives and our communities."     "I believe that rich cultural and artistic exchanges like this one will help bring our peoples and our nations closer together," Obama stressed.     The NSO, founded in 1931, is an American symphony orchestra that regularly participates in events of national and international importance, including performances for ceremonial state affairs, presidential inaugurations and official holiday celebrations.     The orchestra came to China at the invitation of the Ministry of Culture. It plans to give a series of concerts in Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai and perform the renowned works of Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Wagner for the Chinese audience.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan met with visiting chairman of the U.S. Economic Recovery Advisory Board Paul Volcker here Wednesday when they saw eye-to-eye on stepping up dialogue and cooperation.     During the meeting, they agreed to make concerted efforts to develop the Sino-American "positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship for the 21st century", which Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama agreed to build during their meeting in London in April. They also exchanged views on the current global economic and financial situation, and both of them acknowledged that economies of the two countries are increasingly interdependent.     Volcker, who took office in February as head of the newly formed organization, has served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve under President Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan's administrations.     The veteran central banker reportedly accomplished to tame raging inflation in the 1980s by raising interest rates and restricting the money supply.     China and the United States are recently keeping close communication on issues of common concerns.     Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited China in late May. Following her heels, delegations of U.S. congress, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and several other senior U.S. officials also paid visits to China, to seek cooperation with China in fields such as climate change and combating financial crisis.

GUANGZHOU, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Molave hit land in south China early Sunday, with heavy rain forecast in most parts of the Guangdong Province in the following two days, local observatory said.     Molave, the 6th tropical storm this year which became typhoon, landed at Nanao town in Shenzhen City of Guangdong Province at 0:50 a.m. Sunday Beijing Time, with winds up to 145 km per hour in its eye.     Strong gales and heavy rains hit Shenzhen City, resulting in water flowing on streets. However, as residents and vehicles were scare during the night, the weather had no major impact on local people's living yet. BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called on officials to read more books and take reading and study as "life attitude, responsibility and spiritual pursuit."     Xi told officials attending an opening ceremony of a seminar of the Party School of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, "Books are carrying human knowledge and wisdom and are of vital importance to human advancement."     As president of the Party School, Xi asked officials to read enlightening books so as to build the Party into an academic one.     Xi, also member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said officials could gain inspiration, expand their mental outlook and improve their cultural attainment through reading, which could also enrich their working experience.

FLORENCE, Italy, May 22 (Xinhua) -- China's top lawmaker Wu Bangguo said here on Friday that China and Italy both have long-standing cultural traditions and should strengthen their cultural exchanges.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, made the remarks while meeting with Riccardo Nencini, president of the local Parliament of Tuscany Region in Italy.     Wu arrived in Florence on Friday afternoon to continue his official goodwill visit to Italy.
