SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three San Diego County high school football teams qualified for the state finals but may not have enough funding to attend the tournament, school officials said Monday.Lincoln High School boys just finished what coach David Dunn is calling a “Cinderella season”. The team has never before qualified for the event.“Just to have the experience and the opportunity to do it, and let alone be the first team to do it, it means a lot,” said T'ray Kirkland, senior player.The Lincoln High Hornets have had a slim roster, injuries, even a forfeited game. They beat Mira Mesa for the CIF championship.“There have been games where we really had to step up. You just see how much heart each and every person on this team has,” said Kirkland.“Their willingness to compete is different than a lot of the other teams that I've had before," Coach Dunn said.The boys have also been competitive academically. The team averages a 3.1 grade point average with as many as eight players holding a 4.0. Lincoln High is scheduled to play Menlo Atherton this weekend in the San Francisco suburb of Redwood City. The game won’t happen if the team doesn’t get more money. Although the state pays for some of the expenses, the team needs the community to step up.“We need this opportunity to really display that the Southeast produces athletes, great young men, and character,” said Kirkland.San Diego High and Escondido’s Orange Glen High also qualified for the state finals and need financial help. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The purple most restrictive tier for coronavirus guidelines goes into effect Saturday forcing many museums around San Diego County to close their doors once again."It really wasn't a surprise and when this all first started happening I think we realized that there wasn't going to be a magic date that everything was going to be better," James Haddan, Senior Director of Development and External Communications at the Museum of Us, said they've been anticipating the county's fall back into the purple tier."We made some hard choices initially, right away," Haddan said they made difficult cuts to staff at the beginning of the pandemic, hoping to sustain for the next two years."It has been extremely difficult for arts and cultural organizations throughout the city and Balboa Park would be no different," Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Peter Comiskey said.Comiskey said while many of the museums must close, there are still things to do at the park. The Japanese Friendship Garden, Spanish Village, and restaurants are open.In La Jolla, the Birch Aquarium is shifting too. They reopened in July and are creating as many exhibits as they can outside. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The University of California San Diego is getting ready to celebrate Dr. Suess. Friday, March 1, the university will host a special birthday party for the author, which coincides with National Read Across America Day. The celebration will include cake, carnival games, a read-a-thon, giant inflatable Suess characters and, of course, a selfie station.The event will also include a reading from “Happy Birthday to You!” in honor of the classic book's 60th anniversary. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Police Department is looking for four instruments that were stolen from the San Diego Junior Theatre over the weekend.Junior Theater Executive Director James Saban said two guitars and two bass guitars were taken sometime Friday night or Saturday morning.They are described as a white Fender Stratocaster with a checkered strap, a red Epiphone archtop guitar, a seafoam and white Fender bass guitar and a cream Fender Mustang bass guitar.“It was my prized possession, my baby,” said Oliver Davis of his Fender Stratocaster. “So finding out it was stolen was a bummer.”Davis plays the guitar on stage as part of his character. After discovering it was missing Saturday morning, he said he and the other musicians had to rush to find replacements so they could perform their matinee.“Everyone was getting loaned instruments,” he said.The theater has filed a police report but the instruments have not yet been found.Anyone with information can call the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2000. 1036
