(KGTV) -- Neighbors in an Escondido neighborhood are worried after they say dozens of tires were slashed overnight Saturday.The incidents reportedly happened on 4th Avenue and 2nd Avenue between Date and Elm Streets.Residents on 4th Avenue reported waking up Sunday morning to find that at least 11 vehicles had their tires slashed.Similarly, residents on 2nd avenue reported that nearly 30 vehicles had slashed tires.Police said they have been made aware of the incidents but it’s unclear if they have a suspect or will be investigating.Imagine waking up and finding your tires slashed, then finding out it happened to DOZENS more on your block. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- It was a murder-mystery that gripped San Diego County. The family of 12-year-old Stephanie Crowe, waking up on the morning of January 21, 1998, to a horrifying discovery.Stephanie - lying dead on her Escondido bedroom floor in a pool of blood, after being stabbed multiple times.Her family told detectives they were asleep inside the house when the murder happened and heard nothing. Detectives say they found no signs that someone forced their way inside.The investigation and court battles that followed would change the way law enforcement collects evidence and performs interrogations."It was a case where there were clearly major problems with the investigation," said Brad Patton, Richard Tuite's criminal defense attorney. "The problems with the investigation related to the crime scene."Patton spoke with 10News on Thursday, nearly 20 years after Stephanie's death. He told 10News the problems surround the case were how police collected evidence and how detectives interrogated suspects. Problems that caused the case to turn cold - letting Stephanie's true killer continue to walk the streets in San Diego County.  "I don't think the Crowe family will ever get closure," Patton said. Who killed Stephanie Crowe?In the months after her death, Stephanie's 14-year-old brother, Michael and two of his friends would be charged with the murder. A knife was found under the bed of John Treadway. Both he and Stephanie's brother Michael later confessed to detectives during videotaped interrogations.The boys were subjected to intense, prolonged questioning and deprived of food and sleep. The confessions were later judged to be coerced and the charges were dropped. Then, a new suspect. Richard Tuite. He was a transient and diagnosed schizophrenic. Brad Patton was his defense attorney. Tuite was seen in the Escondido neighborhood that night - banging on doors, looking for an old girlfriend. Most damning of all, he was seen wearing a sweatshirt with Stephanie's blood on it. "Mr. Tuite could not, did not, go into that house. There was no forensic evidence of him being in that house," Patton said. There were no hairs, no fibers, no DNA. Tuite claimed he found the sweatshirt while dumpster-diving. Tuite was convicted and would spend more than a decade behind bars. Then, he got an appeal.  An appeal where he was found not guilty of voluntary manslaughter. Stephanie's parents never suspected her brother. Years ago, her mom had this to say to 10News, after Tuite was cleared:"I just hope that North County is aware that he's going to be out walking the streets and that people lock their doors."The murder of Stephanie Crowe is still unsolved.Patton says there's only one way he sees the mystery solved. "You're probably never going to find the actual killer unless that person comes forward at some time," he said. The Crowe family has since moved to the Pacific Northwest. (KGTV) — A 12-year-old who got a hold of a firearm accidentally shot himself in the leg Friday.Escondido Police say the boy was at his home in the unincorporated area of Escondido just before 6 p.m. when he found a revolver. He started handling the firearm and a single round fired, striking him in the leg.The boy was taken to a nearby hospital with a non-life threatening injury. RELATED: 10-year-old in custody after firing shotgun at SDPD officers, police sayDetectives recovered the revolver at the scene and say that they believe the boy accidentally fired the gun.Police are currently investigating how the child obtained the gun at the home. 675

Ever since their older brother competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee years ago, twin brothers Garrett and Pierce Bryner have dreamed of making it to the bee — together.This year, they’ll see that dream become reality. “It’s kind of historical, I guess you’d say,” said Garrett, who made it to the national bee — without his brother — last year.Previously, twins would never have been able to make it to the bee together, as one would have always beaten the other out. But thanks to new qualifying rules put in place this year which incorporate a point system, two sets of twins are now going to be on the national stage for the first time in the spelling bee's 91-year history: the Bryner twins, and another set of twins from Mississippi.Garrett’s brother Pierce will become the third sibling in the Bryner family to attend the bee.Their mom, Liz Bryner, who has shepherded her kids through her share of bees, says that while the two will be nervous, for the parents, its on a whole other level.“I think nothing compared to the Bee in terms of the stress level,” Liz said from her home in Utah. “If you look around at the parents they’re often more nervous than the kids. I think it’s really a nail-biting experience.”Garret and Pierce say they can be competitive when it comes to studying. "Sometimes the other one jumps in tries to spell the word before the other one,” Pierce said. Ultimately they hope for the best for each other.“I just cheer him on,” Pierce said.They’ve been studying as much as they can, Liz said, but as eighth grade boys, surrounded by the rugged landscape of Utah, their attention span only lasts so long before they want to get back outside and hop on their bikes.“I don’t think we’ve ever gone longer than probably 90 minutes at a time,” she said. “That’s about as long as anyone’s been willing to do.”“To know that they can both understand what it’s like to be there at the national bee to compete, and it’ll be something they share,” she said. “The fact that they can share this experience is just incredible as a mom.”ESPN, which broadcasts the bee, has seen viewership numbers for the annual contest that have hovered around one million people. ENCINITAS (CNS) - The Rancho Coastal Humane Society will take in 23 puppies, adolescent, and adult dogs from the Mexican state of Sonora this morning -- the latest in a series of lifesaving transports from Rescue Fenix in Obregon, working hand-in-paw with the humane society and Greater Good Charities."These dogs were rescued from the streets and taken to the Rescue Fenix shelter," said John Van Zante, RCHS spokesman. "They live in outdoor colony kennels. The puppies and smaller dogs compete for food with every other dog. Many of them would not survive if they were not taken in by Rescue Fenix then transferred out of there."The dogs began their 17-hour ride to Tijuana early Friday morning. They crossed the border early Saturday morning and then got some rest at the home of a Rescue Fenix volunteer in Escondido.The dogs are scheduled to be transferred to RCHS in Encinitas on Saturday morning. Rescue Fenix volunteer Georgina Parsa, who lives in Escondido, will complete the transfer."Our Medical team will perform examinations before the dogs are settled into their new kennels with food, water, and their first soft bedding," said Judi Sanzo, RCHS president. "Some of them will go into foster care with trained RCHS volunteers. In the coming days the dogs will receive more extensive exams, vaccinations, medical treatment including spay or neuter, and each dog will be micro chipped before becoming available for adoption."Sanzo said the relationship between Rancho Coastal Humane Society and Rescue Fenix is new, but it's already proven successful."From the first transfer, we were told that the dogs and puppies who arrived here would not have survived if we had not taken them.
