BANGKOK, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese military will adopt a more open and cooperative attitude when developing friendly ties with Thailand's armed forces, a senior Chinese defense official said Monday.Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army of China, made the pledge at the 9th Defence and Security Consultations between the Chinese and Thai Defence Ministries.Complex and profound changes are taking place in regional situations, said Ma. It is the responsibility of governments and armed forces in the region to enhance international cooperation, jointly cope with challenges, safeguard regional peace and stability to create favorable security conditions for common development, Ma said.The Chinese military is willing to boost in-depth, wide-ranging and all-dimensional ties with Thailand, building upon past achievements, Ma said.General Kittipong Keskowit, permanent secretary for defence of Thailand, hailed the long-lasting friendly cooperation between Thailand and China.He also expressed Thailand's willingness to continue carrying out close military exchanges and cooperation with China so as to contribute to the eternal friendship between the two countries and to the peace and stability of the region.During the event, Ma, on behalf of the Chinese military, donated 20 transport speedboats to Thailand to support its fight against the current floods.Ma arrived in Thailand on Saturday for a three-day visit at the invitation of the Thai Defence Ministry.

MOSCOW, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Representatives and financial institutions from China and Russia on Wednesday signed 13 agreements worth eight billion U.S. dollars.Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov, the two chairmen from each side of the Joint Commission for China-Russia Regular Meetings of Heads of Government, attended the signing ceremony held at the fifth China-Russia economic and trade summit forum.Among the deals were two financial agreements worth 236 million dollars, 10 cooperative agreements on economy and technology totalling 5.3 billion dollars, and one trade agreement worth around 320 million dollars.The agreements covered a wide range of areas including commercial trade, investment, mining, manufacturing, construction and telecommunications equipment.The signing of the 13 agreements has fully demonstrated the continuous deepening and broadening economic cooperation between the enterprises of China and Russia, thanks to the efforts of the governments of the two countries.

  

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday urged advancing the nation's health care reforms against all odds in 2011.Li, who heads the State council's leading group on health care reforms, made the remarks while presiding over the eighth plenum of the group.The meeting discussed work agendas in 2011, plans for piloting public hospital reforms, guidelines on training General Practitioners (GP) and other topics.Li said health care reforms had made great headway since they were launched one year ago, and people had received tangible benefits from the reforms. Li called for advancing the country's medical reforms against all odds during the meeting held in the capital city on Tuesday. Li urged improving the health insurance system so that people with major diseases would receive better financial protection.Also, Li stressed streamlining the centralized procurement and distribution of essential medicines so that the medicine system covered most government-sponsored grass-roots health institutions.China began implementing the essential medicine system in 2009 in a bid to reduce costs for patients. Essential medicines are heavily subsidized so hospitals can sell them at their cost.Further, Li urged training grass-roots medical personnel, and staff the nation's 50,000 grass-roots medical institutions with a certain number of GPs so patients would have easier access to medical services.In the public hospital reforms, Li said priority should be given to county-level hospitals that served 900 million people. Capacity building of county-level hospitals was pivotal to improve the affordability and accessibility of medical services.

  

JINAN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- China and the Republic of Korea (ROK)Tuesday launched a joint land and sea transport services in a bid to cut logistics costs and boost trade.Semi-trailers loaded with cargo can now be shipped between Qingdao, Rizhao, Yantai, Weihai, Longyan and Shidao in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong and Incheon, Pyungtack and Kunsan in the ROK.The service can cut transport time by 3.5 hours and reduce costs by 50 U.S. dollars per container, as trailers can be driven directly to customers without unloading and loading, according to the ROK's Transport Research Institute.The service is expected to boost the shipments of fresh vegetables, live fish and other fragile products such as glass and electronics.Gao Hongtao, deputy director of the Shandong Provincial Transportation Bureau, said that with continuous oxygen charging and temperature control, the service can increase by 10 percent the survival rate of live fish exported from Weihai to the ROK.The two countries would later allow trucks to be shipped, according to an agreement they signed in September. The ports might also later include locations such as northeast China's Liaoning Province, according to Ju Chengzhi, director of the international cooperation department with China's Ministry of Transport.This year marks the 20th year since the launching of cargo, passenger and container sea transport services between China and the ROK. China has become the ROK's largest trading partner, both as its largest importer and exporter.
