SAN DIEGO (AP) — Face coverings to curb the spread of the coronavirus are making it hard for people who read lips to communicate. That has spurred a slew of startups making masks with plastic windows to show one’s mouth. The companies are getting inundated with orders and not only from family and friends of deaf people. Those who work with English learners also want them to help them see the pronunciation of words as do hospitals that want their patients to be able to see smiles.Ingrid Helton, a costume designer who sewed one of the masks as a solution for a Fleet Science Center worker, says the masks are vital to providing information or feedback.“You can tell so much by a facial expression, so it’s proving that it can be helpful to everybody,” Helton told the AP. 783

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former U.S. Navy captain and two chief petty officers were indicted in San Diego Friday on charges they allegedly received cash bribes, lavish hotel suites and the services of prostitutes from a foreign defense contractor and allegedly reciprocated by using their influence within the Navy's Seventh Fleet to approve inflated invoices from the contractor.Retired U.S. Navy Capt. David Williams Haas, 50, faces charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, bribery and conspiracy to commit honest services fraud. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A judge Monday denied a request by four San Diego County businesses seeking to resume indoor operations following the county's recent slide into the purple tier of the state's coronavirus reopening plan.San Diego Superior Court Judge Kenneth J. Medel heard arguments Friday on the lawsuit, which was filed earlier this month on behalf of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop, Home & Away Encinitas, Fit Athletic Club and Bear Republic, shortly before indoor operations were suspended for nonessential businesses in the county due to rising COVID-19 case numbers. The businesses sought a temporary restraining order halting the prohibition on indoor operations, contending that San Diego County's increased case numbers are not a result of exposures at restaurants, gyms and other types of businesses impacted by the closures. While Medel and the state conceded pandemic restrictions have created negative economic impacts for businesses, both stated the public health concerns outweighed those harms. In his ruling, Medel wrote, "In the court's mind, the impact on public health of dismantling a portion of the state's COVID-19 response designed to reduce community spread outweighs the economic harm to plaintiffs at least pending further examination of these issues in any upcoming hearing on preliminary injunction."A status conference was scheduled for Dec. 2 for discussion regarding a preliminary injunction hearing.Wilson Elser, the law firm representing the businesses, declined comment on the ruling, stating through a spokesperson that it does not comment on active lawsuits. The lawsuit cited figures indicating restaurants/bars, retail businesses, places of worship, schools and gyms make up a small percentage of infections and confirmed community outbreaks.During Friday afternoon's hearing, attorney Bruno Katz, representing the businesses, referenced an adjudication request submitted to the state by San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten, which sought to have San Diego County remain in the red tier. The request was rejected."Penalizing the impacted sectors for case inc

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A DUI/Driver's License checkpoint in the Mission Bay area of San Diego resulted in 11 arrests, police said Saturday morning.More than 660 vehicles went through the checkpoint at 2600 Ingraham St., between 11:20 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday and nearly 600 of those vehicles were screened, according to Officer Mark McCullough of the San Diego Police Department.Of the vehicles screened, 18 drivers were evaluated and 11 were arrested on suspicion of DUI in or near the checkpoint, including one driver who was taken into custody after he failed to stop for the checkpoint and crashed his vehicle, McCullough said.Police also cited seven drivers for unspecified violations and impounded nine vehicles.Another checkpoint is scheduled for Saturday, but the time and location were not immediately disclosed. 836

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Three solo home runs were enough to power the San Diego Padres past the Miami Marlins.Franmil Reyes, Hunter Renfroe and Ian Kinsler homered, and left-hander Joey Lucchesi combined with two relievers on a four-hitter for his first victory in six starts to lead the San Diego Padres to a 5-2 victory Friday night."We thrive with the long ball and we've got the guys who can hit them," manager Andy Green said. "You have to embrace who you are. We've got a lot of slug as a club. It's nice when you get guys on base and hit two- and three-run homers, but solos did it today."Lucchesi certainly enjoyed the power display."I love it. I love when guys hit them," the big lefty said. "It makes them feel good, it makes us feel good. It's great."Lucchesi (4-3) hadn't won since beating Cincinnati at home on April 21. He retired his first seven batters before allowing a double by Miguel Rojas in the third. He then retired eight straight before allowing a home run by pinch-hitter Rosell Herrera with one out in the sixth. Lucchesi struck out five and walked one.Craig Stammen pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings, Phil Maton allowed two singles to open the Marlins' ninth and Kirby Yates came on to get the final three outs for his 22nd save, best in the majors.Herrera was pinch-hitting for lefty Caleb Smith (3-3), who lost his third straight decision after allowing two runs and three hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked two."I thought he threw the ball really well," manager Don Mattingly said. "Gives up the two solos, but I think we saw the finish that we talked about before, more swing and miss. Definitely a lot better out of Caleb tonight."The Padres "don't really chase too far out of the zone," Mattingly said. "They've got swing and miss but they don't chase all over the place, so there were a lot of deep counts and you've got to make pitches, so we know they're dangerous from that standpoint."Reyes homered on a line shot to left with one out in the first, his 16th. Renfroe hit a moonshot into the second balcony on the Western Metal Supply Co. Building in the left-field corner with one out in the fourth for his 15th."I felt like my stuff was pretty good," Smith said. "Just made a couple mistakes and I've got to stop giving up the long ball."Kinsler homered off Austin Brice with one out in the seventh for his seventh. 2370
