SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Every prom is memorable, but only one is truly an "Unforgettable Prom." Yet just like so many momentous occasions this year, the Unforgettable Prom had to be canceled. But its legacy lives on, touching lives 20 years later."Scott was an amazing young man. Sorry. He was very charismatic," says Carmen Delgadillo.Twenty years and Carmen Delgadillo still gets choked up talking about her son Scott. At 13, Scott Delgadillo was diagnosed with leukemia. He was determined to beat cancer because he was driven to one day attend Notre Dame, he was a fighter, and was surrounded by loyal friends who would always visit him in the hospital."Scott had a lot of friends that would come to visit, and some of the other kids did not. So, he would ask his friends, 'Hey, can you stop by and see my friend?' That's how Scott was; he brought people together," adds Carmen.Those same friends planned to take Scott to the Winter Formal that year. Unfortunately, Scott's sickness got worse, and he passed away shortly after. But his legacy was just beginning."Shortly after his passing, a nurse at Rady Children's Hospital, a nurse that took care of him, stopped me and asked if we would be interested in putting together a prom for the teenagers at Rady's Hospital," says Carmen.So, Carmen and Scott's friends got together and created the Friends of Scott Foundation. Teenagers with cancer and other illnesses, many too sick to attend their own proms, get the red-carpet treatment here at the Unforgettable Prom. Everything from the limos to the boys' tuxes, to the girls' gowns, and everything in between is taken care of for them."This is a way that they just forget about everything, and it's a free night from cancer. And we're very, very proud of this event," adds Carmen.But like most proms this year, the Unforgettable Prom had to be canceled. Instead, Carmen and the foundation are working to gather donations to create care packages for those teenagers suffering from illnesses and their families."We are providing gift cards, whether it be groceries or gas to help some of these families out during the pandemic," says a smiling Carmen.Now, 20 years later, Carmen Delgadillo and her volunteers have impacted and touched thousands of lives in the memory of her son Scott."I'd like to say how many lives have touched me," says Carmen. "Some of these kids are now parents. I've got to meet their children. They've gone on with their lives, some of these kids have gone on to college. So, all those lives that have been part of Scott and his legacy." 2566

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Emily Lake opened Sisters Pizza in Hillcrest last summer to honor her sister Kate, who passed away at an age too young.Her restaurant features a wall of framed pictures of sisters and people who are like sisters - many who have become regulars at the neighborhood eatery. "People have contributed pictures of them and their sisters, them and their friends, and it's not just women. It's anybody who has a close relationship," Lake says. Lake says business had been going even better than expected, until the coronavirus outbreak. Now, her restaurant and those across the county have been reduced to takeout and delivery. "Being any sort of small business owner, and such a brand new one too, we're just navigating scary waters and doing the best we can," says Lake, who owns the restaurant with her husband Trevor. Lake estimates that 60 to 70 percent of their revenue is gone forever. That's because standard insurance policies do not cover loss of business for viruses and bacteria. "I thought that it would be a force majeure or considered an Act of God, and unfortunately it is not," Lake says. "Even in our catastrophe insurance, which would cover earthquake or other natural disasters, this pandemic is not included."But those in the insurance industry say it's an uncertain situation. That's because businesses aren't contracting or closing because they themselves have become infected. Instead, they are doing so because the government is telling them to. One San Diego insurance broker told 10News businesses should make a claim regardless. If it's denied, so be it. Lake said she'd look into that option."At this point we'll pull out all the stops in order to stay in business," Lake said. Meanwhile, California's Department of Insurance is advising all business owners to contact their insurance companies to go over options. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Empty school busses belonging to the San Diego Unified School District are being driven around even though most students continue virtual learning.While this happens, San Diego Unified sits in Phase One of its reopening plan — meaning many students are still at home. Erin Coller's 5-year-old is in the school district. Right now he's learning from home but Coller says she seen busses in the neighborhood."Every time I see one of those busses I just think who is riding them - where could they possibly be going," says Coller. "It stopped at our house around the time that it used to come to our house and I was loading the kids in the car and I was like are you and angel can you just take them and drive them around please, what are you doing and he was just driving the route."At the end of October, Team 10 followed school busses on several days to see where they're going and what they're doing. After leaving the bus yard in Kearny Mesa, one bus headed north to the Scripps Ranch area. The bus made several stops like it was following a planned route, but no students ever got on or off. About 90 minutes and 31 miles later, the bus was back at the yard.Another bus left the yard later that same afternoon and headed to a school in the Poway area. It picked up one student and then headed south to drop them off.The next week, another bus bus went from the yard to Interstate 805 south. It continued on to State Route 54 east to then over to SR-125 north. The bus then completed the circle on SR-52 west. About 40 miles and 53 minutes later, the bus was back in the yard. It never stopped.Standing outside the school lot, bus movement is constant. SDUSD says for good reason."Just starting them up and running them in the parking lot for 10 minutes is not sufficient. They need to put on several miles to make sure that that transmission is maintained that fluids are at the right levels that seals and gaskets are all working also to make sure that our batteries are all charged," says Marceline Marques, SDUSD's operations support officer.Marques oversees the district's transportation."During a regular school year, you would see busses operating empty. I think it just stands out right now because most of our students are participating in online learning," Marques said.Part of that time on the road is driver proficiency. Right now, along with honing their skills, drivers are doing everything from delivering textbooks, to educational supplies, and computers to students' homes.They are evaluating stops for safety and space with social distancing requirements and evaluating school drop-off areas for physical distancing needs and adjustments among other things. The list of driver responsibilities goes on."If it's diesel it needs to be run or it can have problems but as far as delivering supplies I'm shocked to hear that they are doing that because we have multiple students at our school who can not come pick up supplies," one parent told Team 10.The district says it pays .83 per gallon for renewable diesel. Busses average about seven miles per gallon. So that first 30-mile trip we watched cost a little less than in gas. The bus that didn't stop, about .50 for that trip."I think that the practice of running our buses far outweighs the cost of the fuel or the concern that folks have when they see it running without a passenger," Marques said.Right now, about 150 busses are transporting students. Others are being used to help in other ways and some like we saw are rotating through that maintenance schedule. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Feeling overwhelmed by bills? 10News is exploring solutions for making it in San Diego and found there may be a way around the mountain of debt.A recent study by Lendedu suggests companies are open to allowing consumers to negotiate their bills. Using data provided by the company Truebill, Lendedu analyzed which companies tend to be more generous in negotiating with customers.Satellite service providers were analyzed in the report. Customers of SiriusXM had the highest success rate in negotiations, according to Lendedu. Consumers had negotiation success rates in the 80s with three other companies, Suddenlink, Centurylink, and Dish Network, the report showed.The study went on to note, “When it came to how much companies actually knocked off the average customer’s bill, SiriusXM once again led the way; the average SiriusXM customer was able to decrease that monthly charge by 40 percent or more. Immediately behind SiriusXM was CenturyLink, ADT Security, and DirectTV, who all fell into the 25 to 29 percent range in terms of the percentage the bill was decreased by post-negotiations.”RELATED: Making it in San Diego: How to deal with large medical bills"They're looking at who you are as a consumer," said Steven Osinski, a sales and direct marketing professor at San Diego State University. Osinski says the way businesses make their money, especially when it comes to services, is through recurring revenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Frozen raspberry products sold in eight Aldi stores in San Diego County and used in Escondido Union School District cafeterias have been recalled for possible hepatitis A contamination.The Season's Choice products are under the Aldi and Raley's supermarket label, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recall on Oct. 31. The raspberries were also used in yogurt parfaits served during breakfasts in cafeterias in the Escondido Union School District from Sept. 5 to Oct. 31.The recalled products are: (Aldi) Season’s Choice Raspberries (frozen) 12-ounce bags with “best by” dates of June, 10, 2021, August 1, 2021, and August 23, 2021. The UPC code is 0 41498 12419 9 and the lot codes are 20161A, 20213A, and 20235A.(Aldi) Season’s Choice Berry Medley (frozen) 16-ounce bags with “best by” dates of July 17, 2021, July 20, 2021, and July 22, 2021. The UPC code is 0 41498 31344 9 and the lot codes are 20198A, 20201A, and 20203A.(Raley’s) Fresh Frozen Red Raspberries 12-ounce bags with “best by” dates of June 5, 2021 and August 1, 2021.
