SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Monday morning Escondido Police provided extra police patrols at a local mosque that was targeted on Sunday.Police say the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque on 6th Avenue was set on fire by an arsonist that has yet to be identified.Worshipers inside the mosque noticed the flames around 3 a.m. on Sunday and were able to put them out before the fire could spread.Lt. Chris Lick with the Escondido Police Department said once police and arson investigators arrived, they determined that the fire was set intentionally. They also found a note left by the suspect.“Graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the shooting incident in New Zealand,” said Lt. Lick. The San Diego Police Department has also stepped up patrols at mosques across the city in response the incident in Escondido.San Diego's Anti-Defamation League issued a statement in support of the mosque and worshippers.“This attack appears to be meant to send a signal to the Muslim community” said ADL Regional Director Tammy Gillies. “Sadly, this type of behavior is consistent with the growth in hate crimes, rise in attacks on Muslims, and the surge in anti-Muslim bigotry that we have seen in our country and around the world.”A crowdfunding campaign was launched to help raise money to provide repairs and proper security at the mosque in Escondido. The campaign has received support from people across the country. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The high temperatures, dry brush, and low humidity are leading to elevated fire danger in San Diego County this week.Cal Fire San Diego is asking everyone to be prepared for the possibility of a wildfire igniting.“We depend on the public to be careful; we depend on the public to be prepared at a moment’s notice to evacuate,” said Cal Fire Captain, Isaac Sanchez.“The fact that the winds aren’t there, it does not help us sleep at night; we’re still very dry. It’s still October, and we know that even though there aren’t winds now, we can bet money that there will be winds later.”As fire danger remains a threat across the county, families braved the heat taking schoolwork outside at Mast Park in Santee, after being stuck at home for months.“It’s so much easier for the kids to stay motivated on getting their work done,” Jennifer Sailler. “It’s harder to stay inside our home with the AC running than it is to be outside in the warm heat.”The heat is also keeping business going for some.“My job requires me to have a close relationship with snakes and the sun,” said Alex Trejo, So-Cal Rattlesnake Removal. “When it’s hot, what they’re actually doing is trying to find shelter. “Trejo removes rattlesnakes from properties and relocates them to areas where they can have a second chance at life.He said he’s been getting more calls for rattlesnake removals in the East County during the hot weather.“It’s very important to understand the nature of the snake; the snake is not out to hurt people, the snake is a survival expert,” he said. “My priority is making sure families are safe during this heatwave because they will be coming on people’s properties right now.”The heat advisory will remain in effect until 5 PM Friday. 1757

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- California fire officials are cautiously optimistic after dodging a major lightning storm, but they are pleading with residents to stay out of evacuation zones and prepare for days away from home.Three massive San Francisco Bay Area wildfires continue to rage, suffocating the region with smoky air. The wildfires have caused at least seven deaths.Gov. Gavin Newsom says this week will be critical as more than 14,000 firefighters battle 17 major fire complexes sparked by lightning sieges during hot weather. The blazes have destroyed about 1,200 homes and other buildings and singed coastal redwoods.Temperatures are expected to be hot again this week. 683

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Three healthcare-related offices were burglaries early Thursday morning, where criminals got away with cash and prescription pills. At 2:00 am, San Diego Police Officers arrived at the Cos-medic Inc. Plastic Surgery Clinic in Bankers Hill, to find a smashed glass window. They said burglars got away with an unknown amount of money. At 4:15 am, dispatchers sent officers to the Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy in Clairemont Mesa, after the front door was broken in. Nothing was taken. Just 20 minutes later, police said criminals shattered the back glass window at the Carmel Valley Pharmacy. The owners immediately contacted the local Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to notify that the burglars took 600 tablets of Adderall, worth up to ,000 in street value. "This is one of the drugs we see that are highly abused by high school and college students...What they perceive to be a study-aid," DEA Special Agent in Charge, Colin Ruane said. The Schedule-2 narcotic often lands in the hands of our youth, which can have deadly consequences. "In this country, we lose 70,000 people who die of drug overdoses every year," Special Agent Ruane said. "This is just another symptom of the major problem and the major addiction issue we have in the country. They wouldn't be stealing these drugs if there wasn't somebody willing to buy them."San Diego police said there appeared to be no connection between the burglary at the plastic surgery office and the others. However, after our inquiry, the Department said they are working with the DEA to look for a possible connection between the two pharmacy burglaries. They are also helping the owners get back on their feet."We will give them suggestions on additional security measures, make sure they are in compliance," Special Agent Ruane said. "Then, use any additional information from this case and others, in working with the San Diego Police Department to try and find these people who committed this burglary and put them in jail."The DEA reminds the community that they can help keep drugs out of the wrong hands by participating in "National Drug Take-Back Day" on October 26, 2019. Take any unused or expired drugs to the collection site for free, no questions asked. There will be 38 collection sites in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) People across California will soon be able to use an app to notify or find out if they have been exposed to COVID-19.The CA Notify system was launched on the campus of UC San Diego in September. Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the tool would be available on Google and Apple devices statewide beginning on December 10th.Dr. Christopher Longhurst, Chief Information Officer for UC San Diego Health, says the tool helps stop the spread of the virus on campus."While San Diego case rates have surged from 3 to 6 percent, our campus has fortunately remained a safer place with our students and employees testing positive at less than 1 percent," said Dr. Longhurst.Philip Tajanko is a freshman at UCSD. He signed up for the app shortly after arriving on campus in September."I figured that I might as well download the app just in case," said Tajanko.Tajanko tested positive for the virus in October."Outside of the people I directly informed by giving them a phone call or text, it did give me some peace of mind knowing that I could just send out this blanket alert that would notify anyone that I had been in contact with but don't have their phone number," said Tajanko. The system uses smartphone technology when a users' phone is within close proximity to another user for an extended period."You're not going to get an exposure unless your phone is within 6 feet of someone else's device for greater than 15 minutes cumulatively," said Dr. Longhurst. The governor stressed the app is opt-in, 100% private, secure, and does not track location. It has been effective. Even if we don't have tens of millions of people participating in this program, the more people who opt-in, the more effective it can be," said Governor Newsom. 1759
