BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo said on Sunday that China and the United States should help ease the tensions on the Korean Peninsula and facilitate dialogues.In a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about the recent development on the Korean Peninsula, Dai said that China is deeply concerned with the dynamics in the area.Beijing holds that the immediate priority is to try to calm the current situation and reject any move that might escalate the tensions, he added.At the critical moment, Dai said, China and the United States should actively play a constructive role and take concerted efforts to mitigate the situation as soon as possible and safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula.The starting point of all Chinese efforts is to maintain the peninsula's peace and stability, he said, adding that all relevant parties should make joint efforts to secure an early resumption of negotiations and seek solutions via dialogues.Clinton, for her part, said that Washington and Beijing share common interests in maintaining the Korean Peninsula's stability and that cooperation is of pivotal significance.The United States is willing to work together with China to keep peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, she added.The two sides also agreed to maintain close contact on the issue.An exchange of artillery fire between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and South Korea last week killed four people, and aroused the concerns of the international community.

BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A survey conducted by an information center affiliated to Beijing's commerce bureau revealed that retail sales jumped at more than 3,500 stores in the Chinese capital during the 3-day New Year holiday ending Monday, nearly reaching 2.5 billion yuan (about 378 million U.S. dollars), up 17.1 percent from the same period last year.The Beijing Commercial Information Consultation Center surveyed 3,568 stores in Beijing regarding their sales volumes during the past three days, finding that various holiday promotions had brought notable results, pushing up sales to over 2.49 billion yuan.The survey results also showed that consumers in Beijing were passionate about buying gold, since gold prices have kept rising during the past year. BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's apparent consumption of crude steel is likely to reach 596 million tonnes this year, a year-on-year increase of 5.6 percent, according to a steel association official.Apparent consumption represents the sum of net imports and output, and can be used to estimate real consumption excluding inventory.Luo Bingsheng, deputy head of the China Iron and Steel Association, expected the country's crude steel output to climb 8.2 percent this year from one year earlier, to reach 624 million tonnes.Luo further noted that a rising investment in 2011 would result in an increase in China's steel demand.If the year-on-year growth of the country's social fixed assets investment maintained itself at around 20 percent next year, China's crude steel apparent consumption would see an annual increase of 40 million to 50 million tonnes next year, said Luo.
