(KGTV) — For Chula Vista native Cesar Moreno, instinct — and training — kicked in when a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Anchorage, Alaska, Friday."I went straight under my desk and I was just praying," Moreno recalled. "I was afraid I was going to die."Moreno said training for earthquakes while living in San Diego as a child helped prepare him for what to do. Once the quake stopped and things seemed clear, Moreno and his roommate at the University of Alaska ran outside to try and call family members, but cell service was down in the area.He eventually reached his mother.RELATED:Alaska hit by more than 190 small earthquakes since FridayBack-to-back earthquakes in Alaska destroy roads, prompt tsunami warning"I contacted my mom and I was pretty shaken up. I was a little emotional," Moreno said.A Snapchat photo from Moreno showed captured the damaged hallway of a building at the university. The earthquake, and following 5.0-magnitude aftershock, left roadways crumbled, buildings damaged, and caused power outages around the Anchorage area. Since Friday's quake, Alaska has been hit with more than 190 small earthquakes, according to the US Geological Survey. Moreno says the mood around the university is quiet, as if everyone is waiting for the next big shake up."I actually have a backpack ready with extra clothes, extra shoes, extra blankets," Moreno said. "I'm actually going to sleep with all my clothes and shoes on tonight cause if anything happens, I'm ready to just jump out." 1511

(KGTV) - A new study claims Californians are dishing out extra cash due to the condition of the state's roads while supporters of an effort to repeal the gas tax slammed the study for neglecting to tell the whole truth. The study, conducted by TRIP, claims that driving on California roadways costs motorists statewide an estimated billion per year. The estimate is based on vehicle operating costs as a result of driving on rough roads, time and gas lost due to traffic, and the costs of traffic accidents. The study claims 64 percent of San Diego’s major roads and highways are in either poor or mediocre condition. When it comes to San Diego’s bridges, the study claims 64 of them are deemed structurally deficient and in need of improvement.Meanwhile, supporters of the gas tax repeal slammed the study as being a PR stunt by lawmakers to get more money out of California residents. “Don’t be fooled by a PR stunt by politicians of a few projects being approved in the middle of the Gas Tax Repeal campaign. Only a fraction of the existing gas tax goes to any road projects currently with the rest stolen and wasted by politicians. We could fix all of our roads if we simply allocated 100 percent of gas tax revenues to roads, but the politicians will never do that because this has never been about fixing roads, but rather getting more of your money," said Carl DeMaio, chairman of Yes on 6, a statewide effort to repeal the tax.  1486

(KGTV) - A San Bernardino County woman is suing the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and state Natural Resources Agency for not acknowledging the existence of Bigfoot.Claudia Ackley told The Press-Enterprise she ran into the long-fabled creature while hiking in Lake Arrowhead last year. Ackely said she was hiking late one March day when she and her two daughters ran into a Sasquatch."I ran into a Sasquatch – a Bigfoot. We were face to face. He was 30 feet up in the tree," Akley told the paper. "He looked like a Neanderthal man with hair all over him. He had solid black eyes. He had no expression on his face at all. He did not show his teeth. He just stared at the three of us."Ackley said her daughter told her she saw two other creatures run away following the encounter, adding that her daughter captured the encounter on video - which Press-Enterprise published online."People have to be warned about these things. They are big," Ackley said. "We’re totally vulnerable to these things."The lawsuit, filed on Jan. 18, alleges the state departments of failing to acknowledge the existence of the Sasquatch species, despite documented and scientific evidence, according to Press-Enterprise. 1256
