(KGTV) - Extra security officers are in place at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista Friday due to confusion over a school threat at a similarly named school near Tampa, Florida.Pinellas County, Fla. deputies found an unspecific threat written on a wall of a girl’s bathroom at East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs Thursday, according to TampaBay.com. The threat, which was also posted on Snapchat, warned students not to come to school Friday.Word of the Florida threat spread on San Diego County social media pages Thursday night, according to Sweetwater Union High School District spokesperson Manuel Rubio.There is no credible threat to Eastlake High School, Rubio said.As a precaution, the local school added extra security officers on campus Friday.  Families also received an automated phone call Friday morning to reassure them the campus was safe, according to Rubio.The written threat to Florida's East Lake High School has also been deemed not credible, said Pinellas County Sgt. (KGTV) — Worried about having their young students continue to develop reading skills during distance learning, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has launched a new effort to get each students books they can have at home.“When you start reading at a later age, reading becomes a chore," said Dr. Lydia Burgos, Principal at Montgomery Elementary. "We want them to become lovers of books.”CVESD schools are working to find sources of reading level-appropriate books. They have developed partnerships with civic organizations, such as Lions and Rotary Clubs, as well as getting donations from UC San Diego. Some teachers are soliciting cash donations online to purchase books. “We begged, borrowed, and stolen from anywhere that we can in order to have the different levels we need so that all of our students have multiple books in their book bag," said Harborside Elementary Principal Lisa Forehand.Once the books are obtained, they are divided into packets that families can pick up during set distribution times. 1050

Childhood obesity is a big issue in our country. The latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show 1 in 5 school-aged children in America is considered obese.The Kohler family works hard to raise their children healthy. But one medical professional says it’s also the government’s responsibility to help.Dr. Scott Kahan, who sits on the board of directors for the Obesity Action Coalition, says it's not just the Kohler’s responsibility to keep their children healthy, it’s also on local and state governments to make a difference.   "For example, local policies that increase the opportunity, that increase physical activity during the school day have come into place, and that's a good area for governments to work on," Dr. Kahan says.   The Kohler family agrees.   According to the CDC, only 29 percent of high school students attended physical education classes in 2015.   Family and consumer science classes, once known as home economics, are dwindling in schools, mainly due to problems finding qualified teachers.  "Parents can take it on themselves to learn more about the eating and activity and come up with creative ways to help their kids be a little bit healthier," Dr. Kahan says.   When it comes to school lunches, 50 percent of kids’ daily caloric intake come from them, and 31 million kids eat them every day, according to Kaiser Permanente. That's why there are guidelines in place to keep them healthy.   The Kohler family feels lucky to be able to make their children healthy lunches.   "We know what's going into their lunch box and what they are going to eat every day,” the Kohler parents say.   Dr. Kahan says we need to stop pointing the finger and realize parents, schools, state and local governments all play a role in a child’s life.   "We help everyone to pull together, so that we can all lead healthier and happier lives," Dr. Kahan says. 2005

(KGTV) -- Police are asking for the public’s help after they say several suspects stole credit cards and used them to go shopping at Macy’s.Police say a house on the 400 block of Vista Way was burglarized on January 10. The suspects took cash and credit cards, according to authorities.Just hours after the burglary, police say the suspects used one of the victim’s credit cards at the Macy’s located in the Chula Vista Mall.Anyone with information is asked to call 619-422-8477. 507

CHICO, Calif. (AP) — Another person killed in the deadliest wildfire in California history has been identified.The Butte County Sheriff's office said Friday it positively identified the remains of 68-year-old Judith Sipher of Paradise.That brings the total number of named dead to 81. Three people whose remains were recovered after the wildfire are tentatively identified but have not yet been named by the sheriff's office. Two of the 86 victims remain unknown.The fire in November last year destroyed nearly 15,000 homes in Paradise and surrounding towns. In the aftermath of the catastrophe, authorities used DNA testing to identify bone fragments and other remains of the victims. In some cases, it took months to positively identify the victims and notify their next of kin. 788
