He's using his shirt and sleeve to cover his face."Our cashier says he has to wear a proper face mask. The customer gets upset. The cashier offers a face mask that we have on hand for those who don't have masks. He thinks about it and gets upset," said manager Myra Espinoza.In the video, the man waves his hand, apparently waving off the mask offer, before he begins walking away. Moments later, there is a loud sound."He heard something hit the window, and the window falling and shattering down," said Espinoza.The video revealed the cause: the man took his skateboard and thrust into one of the restaurant's windows."It hurts. That's like my house. It's so disrespectful. I wouldn't go to his house and break his window," said Espinoza.Espinoza says it's not the first time someone has gotten upset over the mask policy."We have sliding windows. One gentleman grabbed the sliding windows so hard, it bounced back," said Espinoza.Still, those types of incidents are rare. The double-digit year-over-year gains were most prominent in the West (13.7%), followed by the Northeast (13.3%), the South (11.4%), and the Midwest (11.1%).Median home prices on existing single-family homes shot up to 3,500, 12% higher from this time last year. This means that home prices are growing four times as fast as median family income.“Favorable mortgage rates will continue to bring fresh buyers to the market,” said Lawrence Yun, chief economist at NAR. “However, the affordability situation will not improve even with low interest rates because housing prices are increasing much too fast.”A colossal 65% of the areas measured (117 areas out of 181) saw double-digit price growth year-over-year.Although there’s strong growth in both urban and suburban areas, the data shows that less densely populated places are still performing better than packed cities in terms of homes sales and values. At the beginning of 2020, construction was picking up but Covid pushed a pause button on activity.The good news is that new residential construction is beginning to ramp up again. In September, housing starts were up by 11% year-over-year. According to the recent Dodge Data & Analytics 2021 Construction Outlook, U.S. construction starts are projected to increase by 4% next year, to 1 billion.“Construction has recaptured some of the momentum it lost at the beginning of the year, so that will be good for inventory,” says Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com.Hale says that inventory is really the only thing that can hit the brakes on rapid price growth, discounting other possibilities like baby boomers downsizing and expanding the pool of inventory as a meaningful solution.“As far as boomers moving and downsizing, we haven’t seen a lot of that,” Hale says. “We expect the biggest help on the inventory side to come from new construction. It’s not going to be completely easy—there will still be affordability challenges. The owner of 29 Diner has a big personality, but he might have a bigger heart.“We have the philosophy that we want to put the community first, always, but especially during the pandemic,” said Wood.While many restaurants have been trying to figure out how to serve takeout and keep the lights on, Wood and his team have been trying to figure out how to feed people in need.“We decided that we were going to turn our restaurant into a free food pantry and a free food kitchen,” said Wood.It started as a way to feed kids who wouldn’t be getting meals at schools anymore during the pandemic, but the 29 Diner team saw the need was greater.“We knew that we needed to do more than just feed the kids. So we decided to not only provide hot meals but we needed to open a community pantry as well,” said Wood.29 Diner has been a staple in Fairfax, Virginia, for a long time.“We love the service. It’s so friendly and being part of the community, it feels so natural,” said Melissa Schous, a customer who stopped in for lunch.Wood has been providing free meals and groceries to whoever needs them since the pandemic hit.“The diner became a seven-day-a-week, 12-hour-a-day free food pantry, free food kitchen, feeding thousands of meals daily. We had cars that wrapped around the diner feeding 60 to 80 families a day,” said Wood.The diner takes donations online, or in person with donation jars all around the diner. They use that money to buy the food they give away.While there wasn’t anyone coming in to grab food today, the diner converted their food truck into a mobile food pantry to deliver food throughout the community.Wood's willingness to help others in need is benefiting his business in other ways.And while Wood is willing to do what he takes to give his community a hand up, it’s having other benefits for his business.“Expanded our hours of operation here, we hired additional folks. So we completely reversed the trends of the pandemic of the impact into a small business, because we were taking care of our community,” said Wood.That’s right, 29 Diner is hiring, in this economy!Wood wouldn’t say he exact numbers, but said before the pandemic, he had enough cash to last a few months if business took a turn. Since his efforts to feed Fairfax, he’s seen that pile increase which he says he wants to use to keep feeding families.“We believe that if we touch you in the heart, if you believe in our community, you’ll want to come in and give us your money.
