SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time in over two decades, there will be a new San Diego County Supervisor for District 1. Nora Vargas will be the first Latina to ever serve on the Board of Supervisors. The Democrat will take over for Supervisor Greg Cox, who is termed out. She beat her Democratic opponent, state Sen. Ben Hueso, by roughly 13%. Nora Vargas, a Chula Vista resident, said her background is in health care and education. She's served on the board at Southwestern College since 2013; she's been board president since 2018. She's also an executive at Planned Parenthood. Vargas said her top priority as she heads into office is the COVID-19 pandemic. District 1 primarily serves the South Bay, which is one of the areas hardest hit by the pandemic in the entire county. "For me, it’s really important that we find a balance -- how do we make sure that our small businesses are thriving, that they stay open but at the same time that our communities are healthy and safe? That has to be a priority," explained Vargas. Vargas was born in Tijuana and raised in Chula Vista where she became a U.S. citizen. As the first Latina to serve on the board, she hopes she won't be the last. "I see that as a big responsibility but also as a great opportunity to have dialogue about the issues that really matter for our communities," said Vargas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Fire crews battled several spot fires that popped up near Interstate 8 in Alpine Thursday afternoon.The vegetation fire, called the Victoria Fire, started near I-8 and Victoria Drive around 4 p.m., heavily impacting traffic in the area.Crews from Cal Fire San Diego and other fire agencies attacked the flames from the ground and air and were able to get a handle on the blaze by 5:30 p.m.All eastbound lanes of I-8 at Willows Road were shut down for a few hours as fire crews worked. The lanes reopened before 8 p.m.While the Victoria Fire only grew to two acres, it left some families on edge as the heat continues throughout the week.An excessive heat warning goes into effect Friday through Monday for the inland areas to the deserts. A spokesperson for Cal Fire San Diego said they are fully staffed to handle any fires that may happen.The cause of the Victoria Fire is still under investigation. 929

That’s what many San Diego County restaurant owners felt after hearing the county has suspended enforcement activities on restaurants, for now.A judge’s ruling Wednesday allowed two strip clubs to stay open, and in a surprising twist, extended to the restaurant industry, allowing for in-person dining.While the county sorts out what it will do next, some restaurants are taking the opportunity to reopen for in-person dining, even if it’s short-lived.“I was thrilled to hear the judge’s ruling,” said Julian Hakim, co-owner of The Taco Stand. “I wish there was, even now, a little more clarity. We know the county is not going to enforce, but we’re not sure if ABC who holds our alcohol licenses or others choose to keep enforcing.”Hakim is cautiously optimistic and will now offer minimal outdoor dining options at his locations in downtown San Diego, La Jolla, Encinitas, and North Park.“I’m still prepared for anything,” he said. “There really isn’t any evidence that sitting outside is contributing to the COVID cases; I think there’s evidence of people being inside, so I would agree with that, and I wouldn’t open inside just yet.”Mikko Sushi’s Escondido, Carlsbad, and Vista locations reopened for outdoor dining and indoor dining at 25% capacity Thursday.“We decided to open with all the safety guidelines that are mandated by the county and state we will follow that,” said Mikko Sushi co-owner Mia Davis. “We debated actually, should we really open or not, but after thinking through overnight, many of our employees need jobs, this is right before Christmas, and they need to put the food on the table, they need to pay their rent.”Davis said she had to furlough 70% of her employees after the latest restrictions on restaurants went into place, and they could only offer takeout.Both Davis Hakim said they have many safety precautions in place, and they’re following what happens next closely.“We take this COVID-19 seriously, and we know the cases are increasing, and we just want to follow the rules.” 2069

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fifty-six years ago, San Diego officials sealed up a collection of items reflective of life in the early 1960s in America's Finest City.Friday, officials gathered at the old San Diego County courthouse to unearth those relics and take a glimpse into local history.Inside the time capsule: A copy of one edition of each newspaper published in San Diego County, 1961 coins, a county charter, a list of county officials, a copy of the capsule dedication, a leaflet sent out with 1961-62 tax bills, a newspaper clipping about the capsule, and various other items submitted by locals and organizations.RELATED: San Diego opens new courthouse trolley stationThe state Judicial Council is set to hand over the old courthouse property to San Diego County at the end of this month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Get ready for sunny days at SeaWorld this summer, as the cast of a television favorite comes to San Diego.SeaWorld will host Sesame Street favorites including Elmo, Cookie Monster, and others with themed floats, music, and two performances along the parade route during the Sesame Street Party Parade.The parade will feature 10 massive floats depicting the areas kids know and love, like Mr. Hooper's Store and the Count's Castle.More than 20 dancers will jump and jive alongside Elmo down the parade route, along with a cast of furry friends.During the two mid-parade shows, performers will jump rope, hula hoop, and groove to guests' delight. One show will star Rosita, a Sesame Street favorite known for her guitar skills. The parade can be seen on weekends running from May 25 - Sept. 1 at the park. 830
