There are currently only a few treatments in helping to fight COVID-19, and one is antibodies from a Coronavirus survivor. But gay men wanting to donate are being faced with hurdles.A donation ban started with a 1980s restriction in the height of the AIDS and HIV crisis when the federal government created a lifetime ban on blood donations from gay men.The rule was replaced in 2015 with a regulation that requires a year of abstinence to donate blood.In April of this year, the FDA revised the abstinence period for gay men to donate blood or plasma from 12 months to three months in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.Chris Sanders with the Tennessee Equality Project says this is a start but these guidelines are not created equal."My call to action would be that the Congress of the United States will hold hearings on this rule and put pressure on the FDA to make this change," said Sanders.As the American Red Cross is pushing for more COVID-19 survivors to donate their antibodies to help sick patients, Sanders says some who are willing to help are being turned away."I talked to a gay man in East Nashville today who has survived COVID-19, and I asked him if the ban weren’t in place would you consider plasma donation and he said he would," said Sanders, "There are potential donors in Tennessee who would get turned away because of this unscientific, outdated FDA rule."Gay rights advocates say if this country wants to save more lives it will review what they call outdated policies.This story was originally reported by Kelsey Gibbs at WTVF. 1565

We sealed them up and sent them off and waited about 6 weeks.We got her results back and here's what Makos thought of them."It's shocking. It is really shocking. I can't imagine what technology they employ to get these results," she said.It's shocking because her results were all over the place. When it comes to Eastern Europe, Ancestry said she was 49 percent Eastern European, but 23 and me and MyHeritage only put the percentage in the high 20s. "When we look at it for example, it says the Balkans here… one says 34 percent and one says 18 percent. A bit of a discrepancy there."Makos thought for sure she is 50 percent Italian. 23 and me and MyHeritage says she's closer to 30 percent. She even had some North African DNA."I would love to know," Makos said about having North African DNA. "I know I get really tan in the summer but I didn't know I got that tan… who knows."The companies don't claim to be perfectly accurate, and use different algorithms. MyHeritage told us in a Skype interview, it maps more parts of the globe that other companies."MyHeritage DNA has 42 ethnic regions with percentages and that's the most on the market, Rafi Mendelsohn, spokesperson for MyHeritage said."Mendelsohn encourages you to read the fine print including what companies might do with your DNA profile after testing."Personal information provided to MyHeritage is never sold, licensed or shared with any third parties, he said." Both Ancestry DNA and 23 and Me say your DNA could be used for medical research by its "partners" after your name has been stripped out. Peter Pitts, a former FDA associate commissioner said, watch out."Companies will tell you that they may sell the information but nobody can find you," Pitts said. "And that's not true. The key word there is reasonable.“The problem with what's going on right now and some of the things that have been going around the internet, is that the advice, kind of spurious advice that's being put forth is to use the provision for reasonable accommodation as a sword rather than as a shield,” said David Tarrien, an associate professor at WMU-Cooley Law School.Tarrien says the conditions that qualify as a mask exemption have a smaller scope than many realize. For example, he says asthma patients likely do not fall under that scope. But later stages of pulmonary respiratory disease, emphysema, or a serious mobility issue can be "legitimate" reasons.Furthermore, you could face repercussions for lying.“If they're claiming that they have a disability and they don't have a disability, if that is found out, then there are criminal and civil penalties for that,” said Tarrien.As for privacy concerns, Tarrien says store employees are allowed to ask customers why they're not wearing a mask. If you refuse to answer, they may refuse entry.Even if you give a legitimate reason to not wear a mask, you may still be refused entry. Toys "R" Us is on its way out, but KB Toys is set to pop back up.Strategic Marks, a company that buys and revitalizes defunct brands, owns the KB name and plans to open 1,000 pop-up KB Toys stores for Black Friday and the holiday shopping season."My assumption is that there's about half a billion dollars worth of toys that have been produced for Toys "R" Us with no place to go," said Strategic Marks president Ellia Kassoff, in a phone interview with CNNMoney. "That's a big, big void that we're hoping to fill up."Toys "R" Us, which filed for bankruptcy last year, announced last week that it expects to close all of its 735 stores in the US. Those closures will put 31,000 people out of work and hurt toy manufacturers that depended on the national retailer for distribution.Kassoff said he's been in contact with Hasbro Inc. and Mattel, Inc. and up to 200 smaller toy suppliers who are looking for new brick and mortar retailers. He said he plans to take advantage of a glut of toy manufacturers that have inventory but no place to sell it.To get a quick retail footprint, Kassoff said he's working with companies that specialize in holiday and pop-up retail, like Spencer Spirit Holdings Inc., Go!
