The other two judges were Judge Michael Chagares, a George W. Bush appointee, and Judge D. Brooks Smith, who has been appointed by both GOP and Democratic presidents. “Charges of unfairness are serious. But calling an election unfair does not make it so. Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here,” 3rd Circuit Judge Stephanos Bibas wrote. Surfing CEO Greg Cruse.U.S Olympic surfing coach Brett Simpson says he loves the surfing tradition and atmosphere you find in Oceanside."The culture is very rich. There has been a lot of years where there has been tons of shapers, the magazines, and clothing companies."So it just makes sense the U.S. Olympic Surfing team has chosen Oceanside as a training site for the Olympic games in Japan."Oceanside is a very ideal place because it mimics a lot of what we are trying to do. There are beach breaks, and it has some jetties, as well as a pier. It's very good practice for where ever we go around the globe."And the beaches also resemble the type of waves team U.S.A.will be competing on when they get to Japan next year."For us to be able to utilize something that's similar to the Olympic site, without having to travel to Japan, is going to be very helpful to our team," says Cruse.And this Sunday, Oceanside is calling on all surfers to hit the waves in support of California Surfing Day. It is the state's designated holiday to honor the history and the culture of the sport. "Obviously, every day is surfing day for me and other surfers," says Simpson. "But September 20th is a big one. Not since 2005 has the Atlantic basin seen so many storms in a hurricane season. The year 2020 now eclipses the old record, with at least 12 of those storms making landfall this year in the U.S. alone.“Those two years are quite similar. They are anomalies,” said Lewis Link, a professor at the University of Maryland who studies hurricanes.An increasing number of hurricanes are becoming major ones, which means their wind speed falls into a Category 3 hurricane or higher.“Partially, it could be attributed to warming, higher sea surface temperatures, which are the fuel for generating hurricanes,” Link said.It’s not just coastal areas that bear the brunt of concern during hurricanes. More and more often, the effects from these storms may hit the coast first, but they are being felt far more inland and in many more states than ever before.A recent map put together by the National Hurricane Center showed all the counties impacted by hurricanes and tropical storm winds this year. The effects of those storms reached inland states like Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia and Vermont.Yet, the effects from these storms go beyond just high winds.“The biggest problem we have is with flooding, is inland flooding,” Link explained. "And some of that is attributed to tropical systems that continue to dump a lot of rain, long after they cross the shoreline.”That’s an issue, he said, because many areas don’t have the infrastructure in place to deal with the heavy, quick downpours that are associated with tropical systems.“Not only are they old, but they’re just not up to the task. That’s a serious problem. How do you change that?” Link said. “We’re not set up well to change our infrastructure based on changing conditions.”It is a change that may have some communities rethinking exactly what it means to be in a hurricane zone.While the official hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, occasionally some tropical storms do develop outside those dates, including some that formed this year in May. OCEANSIDE (CNS) - A pedestrian was hit and killed while crossing an Oceanside highway late Saturday night, police said.The crash was reported to police shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of state Route 76 and Douglas Drive, according to Oceanside police Sgt. Rick Davis.Officers found a man lying unresponsive in eastbound lanes of Route 76.Davis said according to witness statements and evidence at the crash scene, investigators believe the pedestrian was crossing Route 76 from north to south against a red light, and was hit by a car heading east on the highway with a green light.The driver, who was not injured, immediately stopped and waited for police to arrive, Davis said. Police did not suspect alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.The name of the victim was not immediately released. 826
