SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local family is remembering their mother who died suddenly after suffering a brain aneurysm.Monica Pimentel, 43, collapsed at her home on May 17. She died the next day at the hospital with her family by her side. Monica was born and raised in San Diego. She graduated from Patrick Henry High School and was deeply involved in the San Carlos community. She was the mother of four children.This is the second time tragedy has struck the Pimentel family. In 2014, one of their daughters, Jewelean Pimentel, died from bacterial meningitis. Jewelean was a freshman at Patrick Henry and was also a cheerleader for the school. The family's father is devastated after suffering two heartbreaking losses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man suspected of trying to burn down an Albertson's sign in El Cajon pleaded not guilty in Superior Court Friday.Joshua Edgell Wright was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly set fire to the sign at the grocery store off Broadway. A local business owner followed him to a Smart and Final in Lakeside, where he was apprehended. Wright appeared in court via video conference and said nothing. Records show he's been charged with 16 crimes in the last three years, including for petty theft, shoplifting, and resisting arrest.Deputy District Attorney Brandon Owens declined to discuss Wright's criminal history. Judge Daniel Lamborn set bail at ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego company says they have the solution to make people recycle more and get back the money they spend on redemption fees. One Earth Recycling wants to put the redemption centers in high-traffic areas like malls and grocery stores, rather than their usual spots in industrial areas of the city."Our goal is not to try to exceed people's expectations of recycling, we're trying to develop a whole new category of recycling," says One Earth CEO Josh Turchin.RELATED: California considers overhaul of bottle and can recycling programEvery year, Californians leave hundreds of millions of dollars on the table because of unredeemed cans and bottles. Turchin says the biggest problem is that it's not easy to find redemption centers, and they're not always the most welcoming of places."This program has been hijacked by opportunistic operators who have just strip-mined the model and operate it as inexpensively as possible," he says.To counter that, Turchin plans to open 100 small-scale redemption centers at malls and grocery stores across California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A plan to improve bike access along Harbor Drive may put pedestrians at risk.As SANDAG works to promote alternative transportation through its "Keep San Diego Moving" initiative, they plan to upgrade the Bayshore Bikeway.That includes a stretch through Barrio Logan that runs along Harbor Drive from 32nd Street to Park Boulevard.Renderings from SANDAG show a two-way bike lane protected from traffic by concrete or plants.But, plans to build the bike lanes also call for the removal of two pedestrian bridges that go over the intersection of Harbor Drive and 32nd Street. SANDAG will replace the bridges with crosswalks.Navy personnel use the bridges as they go to and from Naval Base San Diego every day.Some people who use the bridge daily say they're worried that it will lead to more accidents and dangerous conditions while trying to cross. Others say it could lead to more people jaywalking along Harbor Drive.SANDAG told 10News that safety is their top concern, and the new crosswalks will "enhance the entire intersection, including adding pedestrian pushbuttons, striped crosswalks, median landings, and other safety features."SANDAG also says they're working with the Navy and other city organizations to make sure the crosswalks are as safe as the bridges. A spokesperson for the Navy was unable to provide a comment about the project.Right now, the project is in the environmental review phase. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local marine is recovering from COVID-19 while deployed overseas.Jennifer Dulaney says her husband, Kyle, was deployed in April and is serving at a base in Okinawa. He tested for COVID-19 earlier this month.“My husband called me on a Monday morning as I was getting ready for work and said he felt like he was getting symptoms,” Jennifer said.Kyle got worse and was eventually sent to the ICU. His condition began to worsen that he qualified for the Remdesivir. It was described as an experimental drug, and doctors needed Jennifer’s permission to administer it to Kyle.Jennifer is a nurse and knew that COVD-19 could be very severe.“I know where COVID can go, they can spiral downwards real fast,” she said, “so for me, the benefits outweighed the risk.”Jennifer said he began to show improvement on the fifth day. She was able to him Friday morning.“They were drawing his lab work because that’s one of the things with the experimental (treatment), they have to watch things very closely,” she described, “but he actually laughed on the phone, he was able to talk to me without coughing. It’s amazing.”She hopes her husband will be out of the ICU within the next two days.During the difficult time, Jennifer took a leave of absence from her job. She said it was difficult to continue working as a nurse while worrying about her husband’s health. So to help with finances, a friend started a GoFundMe for their family.
