SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With picture-perfect views, San Diego appears to be a flawless place to live. However, with the average rent for an apartment around ,000 and the cost to purchase a home around 0,000, America’s finest city loses some of its appeal.“Everybody said you’re set with your life,” Chris Allen explains.Allen is a former Navy rescue diver, swim coach, a husband, and a dog dad who fell on hard times because of a bad motorcycle accident.“I had like a 9 percent chance to live,” Allen said.This accident forced him out of work for six months, so he started living in his van. He ended up converting his van to include a fridge, a fold out bed, lighting and uses a bucket with kitty litter for the restroom. Now a year later, he’s embraced van life and says it provides a chance to travel and save money.“It’s more freedom, but at the same time it’s more responsibility,” Allen said.Allen isn’t alone. During a weekend meet-up, around 300 vans and van-lifers packed Fiesta Island to explore each other's vans, and discuss life on the road.Liz Bryant, who works as a social media influencer, is living in a converted Mercedes sprinter van. She said she started living in her van for the freedom. “We don’t want to be tied down to an apartment. We don’t want to be tied down to a monthly payment,” Bryant said. Sky Montrell is moving into her van because she is tired of throwing away ,000 a month on rent. “The cost of living in LA is crazy,” Montrell said. Breanne Acio runs SD Camper Vans and converts vans for people looking for life on wheels. She says she’s seen an increase in customers recently. “A lot of people are downsizing, and they are putting their lives first and doing things they thought they could only do when they’re 65 and retired,” Acio said.The Van Life Movement has made a mark on social media. The hashtag "van life" has been used more than four million times. Even though the movement is growing in popularity, sleeping in your vehicle on city streets isn’t allowed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit. With rising rents and mortgage rates increasing, experts say that trend is about to get worse.“On November 5 my family and I are going to be homeless because it’s very hard to find places,” said Margot Velez.Velez is being evicted from her apartment, the complex she’s called home for nearly a decade. There’s a dispute about whether or not she’s paid the rent.RELATED: San Diego rents will continue to rise, according to USC rental forecastVelez said she’s up-to-date. She explained the owners of the complex claim she’s about ,000 behind, which is about three months rent.Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin asked Velez if there’s a possibility she ends up on the street.“Yeah, a real possibility,” she said.RELATED: More space for your money: Top neighborhoodsVelez is just one of the thousands in San Diego County facing an eviction.According to San Diego County Court records, there were more than 9,000 unlawful detainer cases filed last fiscal year. Those are eviction lawsuits.A report by the group Tenants Together, a statewide organization for tenants’ rights, stated landlords file an average of 166,337 eviction lawsuits annually in California, with a total of 499,010 households facing eviction in the three-year period. An estimated 1.5 million Californians faced court evictions over the last three years.RELATED:?Developer plans 300 new apartments in Otay Ranch"Evictions are on the [rise] in San Diego, and it's largely because there's just a depletion of rental stock,” said attorney Christian Curry with the Tenants Legal Center, a San Diego Law Firm. “Really, what it is is they get behind on their rent, and by the time they come to us usually they have the money to pay, but the landlord just won’t take it anymore."Curry said rents are going up and many people can't keep up, but in San Diego County, there are laws to help protect renters.The Tenants’ Right to Know regulations has a section that outlines termination of tenancy guidelines.RELATED: Housing swaps offer vacation savingsAccording to the regulations, a residential tenancy of more than two years duration shall not be terminated, nor shall its renewal be refused unless for things such as nonpayment of rent, the landlord intends to withdraw all rental units in all buildings or structures on a parcel of land from the rental market or the owner of blood relative plans to occupy the rental unit as their principal residence.If you’ve broken the rules and you haven’t been in your home for more than two years and you're facing eviction, there is a process for removal. According to Curry’s website, “After receiving an UNLAWFUL DETAINER [sic], the tenant/occupant must respond timely or lose the case. If you are personally served, you have only five calendar days to respond. If someone is served for you, you may have an additional 10 days. Weekends are counted but the last day to respond cannot land on a weekend (or holiday). If it does, the 'last day' carries over to the next business day. There are many defenses which can be raised.”Curry said tenants should know their rights and try to talk with the landlord ahead of time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Video captured shots ringing out, apparently pelting cars in a Rolando neighborhood, including the vehicles of a family already impacted by the pandemic.A shattered windshield is what Ondria Aviles found when she went to her Dodge Journey, parked outside her home along Marraco Drive on Monday night."Just couldn't believe that had happened," said Aviles.Her husband came out and found the driver side window of his truck - also parked on the street - was also shattered."My husband had a BB pellet hole in his window," said Aviles.Turns the moments their vehicles were vandalized were captured by neighbor Ryan Dick's surveillance camera. Just before 7:30 that night, a red sedan was recorded driving through when three shots rang out in a span of three seconds. The final two shots sounded near Aviles' vehicles.According to posts on the Nextdoor app, at least four other cars and homes were struck in a several-mile stretch. "Couldn't imagine if they missed and hit someone, a young child. We have three kids," said Aviles.Along with her outrage, there is frustration. The bill for the window damage will be a hardship. Because of the pandemic, she's been furloughed for several months. Her husband's work hours reduced."This is the worst time this could happen, in our current situation," said Aviles.That mystery car is believed to be a maroon Lexus IS.
