LUOYANG, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has stressed economic restructuring, agricultural production and the role of grass-root party organizations during his visit to the city of Luoyang in central Henan province.Hu visited state-owned enterprises, research institutes and talked with local farmers during this trip from Friday through Sunday.At Citic Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., the largest manufacturer of mining machinery in China, Hu learned that the company had shifted focus from manufacturing to research and development. He said innovation is the lifeblood of a company.He also visited a tractor manufacturing plant and a bearing producing company, both enjoying rapid growth thanks to restructuring. Hu asked officials at the two companies to continue with their restructuring and their ongoing expansion through innovation.Hu also visited two research institutes. At China Aviation Lithium Battery Research and Development Center, Hu asked the center to seize the opportunity as the new energy industry is booming and the market demand for lithium batteries is expanding.At another research institute, Hu stressed the role of talent in scientific and technological research.Hu also urged the province to to do a good job in agricultural production this year, as Henan contributes the largest share of crops in China.Hu urged village-level party organizations to serve the interests of farmers while visiting a local village.Hu visited farmers at a corn field and asked about the yields and price of corn. Hu told farmers that supporting grain production is a long-term policy and the state will again boost such support in the future so farmers can earn more and increase their wealth by planting grain.Hu said China would continue to give priority to the development of rural areas, agriculture and farmers during the 12th five year plan, China's development blueprint for the next five years.Hu noted that China's grain yields have increased for 6 consecutive years, and this year the summer yield of grain is another good harvest, despite earlier bad weather.Hu said, however, that Henan, as China's bowl of grain, should take on the responsibility to safeguard the nation's food security and enhance its agricultural production capacity.While visiting a local village, Zhouli village of Mengjin county, Hu requested village-level party organizations to work for the interests of farmers.Hu added that the party organization plays a critical role in improving the standards of living for farmers.Zhouli village was relocated to its present site to make way for a water conservation project in the Yellow River in 1995. Since then, the per capita annual income of local farmers rose from 680 yuan (100 U.S.Dollar) to its current 4,950 yuan now, and farmers now have access to running water, cable TV as well as other public services.Hu said the government would continue providing favorable policies to farmers so they might lead better lives.At the end of his visit, Hu urged continuing efforts to transform the economic growth pattern, adjust the economic structure, increase the amount of indigenous innovation, continue to promote energy conservation, emission reduction and environmental protection as well as reform and opening up.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and consequent floods have left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Latest figures from the ministry show that, as of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, rain-triggered floods had affected some 29 million people and 997,000 had been evacuated.Further, the direct economic loss had reached 19.75 billion yuan (2.89 billion U.S. dollars). On Aug. 18, torrential mudslides swallowed an iron mine factory where his sister worked as a cook, burying her.It will take some time for the 16-year-old to heal. His father passed away soon after he was born. And now, the loss of another loved one in a family of four is too much for the introverted 16-year-old to deal with.Yang Zhenmei, a volunteer psychology counselor from the provincial capital Kunming, traveled 930 km to the disaster area to offer help for young people like Yu.She held a brief psychological intervention session with the boy, had patient conservations with him and told him to refrain from aggressive behavior. She also told him to call her if he feels overwhelmed by difficulties.But not many people are as lucky as Yu, who receives the kind of psychological services rarely seen in Litoudi Village, a remote mountainous village in China's southwest Yunnan Province, which borders Myanmar. In a village with a population of a little more than 150, medical resources are scarce.Litoudi Village has only one doctor. Usually, local residents have to travel seven km to be treated in a hospital at the township seat of Puladi.Soon after the mudslides, about 130 doctors and nurses from Gongshan and Fugong Counties rushed to the scene, though none of them had previously received psychological training, except for a handful of doctors who had taken psychology courses back in college.Moreover, the focus of the medical services in the immediate aftermath was on treating the injured, helping rescuers with minor injuries and preventing outbreaks of diseases.Authorities have said 92 people were killed or remain missing following the massive mudslides that swept the village.Torrents of mud and gigantic stones smashed and buried the Yujin Iron Mine and about 10 civilian residences at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Most of the victims were local residents and migrant workers at the Yujin Iron Mine.The government has not released the number of people needing psychological assistance in the village. The village population is about l50, though some 380 relatives of the victim have temporarily settled into 20 tents or villagers' homes. "The number of people suffering psychological wounds and prone to having extreme actions is small. It's a mudslide and the chances of survival are slim. If people did not have extreme reactions in the first two days, they will somehow accept reality." volunteer counselor Yang said.However, she still suggests creating a mid- and-long term plan to help local residents, by which she meant to train some villagers or young people as volunteers and help local residents suffering from stress brought on by the loss of loved ones.Unlike the situation following the magnitude-8.0 Sichuan earthquake in 2008, when thousands of volunteer counselors and psychological experts went to the quake-devastated zone to offer help, only about 300 volunteers came to Litoudi Village.

XI' AN, July 16(Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Xi'an, capital of northwest China' Shaanxi Province, Friday night to continue her China visit.During Merkel'stay in Xi'an, she'll attend a forum with Chinese and German business leaders and meet with provincial leaders.The visit will also take her to some historic sites, including the Terra-cotta Warriors, the Great Mosque at Huajue Lane as well as a local motor company.Merkel is on her fourth China visit since taking office. She flew to Xi'an from Beijing after finishing meetings with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and vice President Xi Jinping on Friday.
