PARKLAND, Florida — As students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School return from spring break, they will face several new security changes at the school.On Monday, students will receive clear backpacks for free, and the superintendent says those will be the only backpacks allowed on campus.The thousands of students at the school will also now wear a school identification badge everywhere on campus.This comes after the deadly school shooting in February that killed 17 people, but also after a series of incidents the week leading up to spring break.Two students were charged with bringing weapons on campus, and a third made a threat on social media.Deputies also arrested the confessed shooter’s brother for trespassing on the school property. Zachary Cruz pleaded no contest Thursday and sentenced to time served and six months of probation.A Broward County sheriff’s deputy was also suspended for allegedly sleeping in his patrol car while on duty at the school.Florida Highway Patrol will also have eight troopers stationed at the school entrances. The Broward County School district is providing additional security as well.This district will also consider metal detectors, metal detector wands, and trying to consolidate the point of entry for students and staff.The memorial that honored their classmates for the past six weeks is no longer there. PHOENIX — Arizona news station ABC15 has learned that an Arizona lawyer assisting the Trump campaign is looking at ballots filled out with Sharpies as one focus for what could become an attempt to flip Arizona to President Donald Trump.The attorney says many Trump supporters who used Sharpies are worried that their votes are being thrown out as the counting process continues around Arizona. There is no evidence at this point that Sharpie votes have been disqualified.The attorney, who has deep roots in the state’s election processing system, told ABC15’s Nicole Valdes that the Sharpie ballots are on the radar of those deciding what, if anything, they may do in court. The information was given on condition that the source would not be named. ABC15 has verified that the attorney has direct knowledge of the developing legal strategy for President Donald Trump in Arizona.The information comes as ABC News reported Wednesday that Governor Doug Ducey told the White House he “sees something” that could get Arizona and its 11 electoral votes in the win column for the President.At this point, there’s no sign of any movement toward actual litigation around the Sharpie ballots or any other vote casting or vote counting activity.Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs is on the record defending the Sharpie ballots, though a ballpoint pen is the recommended method for filling out a ballot. ABC15 checked in with attorneys representing Democratic candidates, who say they have not heard of any potential litigation yet.Sharpie is the trademarked name of a permanent felt tip marker. Its use on Arizona ballots became a prominent conversation point on Twitter overnight.The Maricopa County Elections Department says even if marks made by Sharpies or any felt tip marker on a ballot bleed through the paper, it won't impact their tabulator's ability to read contests. Maricopa County's tabulators are designed only to read the ovals for each contest, according to county election officials. Even if ink bleeds through to the other side of the ballot, the ink won't mark another contest, since ballots are printed in an "off-set" pattern, meaning contests on the back side of the ballot don't align with those on the front.Republicans and the Trump campaign were shocked when Fox News declared Democrat Joe Biden the Arizona winner at about 9:30 p.m. on Election Day. Its goal is to rescue pups and turn them into service dogs for veterans who need them now even more than ever during a pandemic.Veteran Suhir Shrestha was born in Nepal and moved to the U.S. He was so thankful for his life here that he decided to enlist in the military as a way to give back, at 39 years old."I deployed to Afghanistan in 2013 and there, obviously, it was a war zone," he said.Shrestha said when he returned, he suffered from PTSD, depression and anxiety."I had a lot of suicidal thoughts and a lot of negative thoughts, nightmares, flashbacks, what have you," he said. "It was very difficult to lead a life."It's a life that has recently take on new meaning with Indie by his side."It has been a tremendous life-changer for me," he said. "Before, I used to be not able to go outside, be nervous of a crowd and just have negative thoughts in me."Indie was adopted from the shelter-to-service dog program through Furry Friends Adoption Clinic and Ranch."Gives me extra confidence to go outside because I have him," Shrestha said."These dogs are coming from high-kill shelters in many cases," said Pat Deshong, the president of Furry Friends Adoption Clinic and Ranch. "We don't necessarily take them to be service dogs, but we take them because they are high energy."The group is building a new training center in Palm City and is weeks away from completion. It's all in an effort to bring veterans from across the country to Florida to adopt."These veterans are so deserving of these dogs," Deshong said. "We don't automatically pick which dog is right for the veteran. Police in Omaha, Nebraska are looking for a suspect vehicle in connection with a shooting at the Irvington Walmart just before 5 p.m. Wednesday that left a 21-year-old woman dead.Kayviaun T. Nelson died after a shooting in the parking lot of the Walmart near 99th Street and Military Avenue, just off Interstate 680, with a child reportedly in the vehicle. OPD are looking for a 2001 bronze Chevy Malibu with license plate VVT-545.Police closed down the Irvington Walmart for hours Wednesday evening while conducting their investigation around the store.Police said they believe some type of disturbance occurred at a different location and the suspect in the shooting followed her to Walmart.Officers later worked with store management to clear all customers from the Walmart location just off Interstate 680 North and prevent anyone else from entering the location. OPD said they expected the store to be closed for a few hours while they review surveillance video. An OPD forensics unit arrived at the scene just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.  1116
