BUFFALO, N.Y. — Social workers could soon work alongside police officers in the Buffalo Police Department. Captain Jeff Rinaldo with the Buffalo Police Department said Monday that officers in Buffalo have been undergoing crisis intervention training for several years. He said officers are learning techniques to help handle situations with people in crisis, including mental health, substance abuse and homelessness. Buffalo police are working on an "initiative to embed licensed clinical social workers" who would work alongside police and help respond to crisis calls, according to paperwork submitted to the Buffalo Common Council. "The goal now is to create a specialized unit called the Behavioral Health Team within the police department," Rinaldo said. Endeavor Health Services is the company named in the proposed contract. A recently-awarded grant allowed the company to hire three trained clinicians to work with Buffalo police and handle crisis calls, Rinaldo said. The contract requires approval by the Common Council and is expected to be discussed at a meeting on Tuesday. The department's new plan was released as protesters across the country call for significant changes in policing. Some proposed plans involve defunding local police departments and, instead, sending social workers to deal with certain crisis calls. Albuquerque, New Mexico, announced earlier this year that they plan to install a similar program in the coming months. This story was originally published by WKBW in Buffalo, New York. 1530
BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — A large area of Boulder County, including the towns of Jamestown and Ward, are under a mandatory evacuation order after two new wildfires sparked over the weekend. The 8,788-acre Calwood Fire started Saturday and is burning near the Cal-Wood Education Center in the Jamestown area. Officials Sunday night confirmed that 26 homes were lost to the fire, so far, mostly on the eastern side of the fire along Mountain Ridge Drive and Foothills Ranch Drive. No injuries were reported. The Calwood Fire was about 15% contained as of Sunday night. The most concerning area of the fire was the northern ridge of the fire area, due to the steep, rocky terrain and dry fuels, officials said.On Sunday, a new wildfire, dubbed the Lefthand Canyon Fire, started in the 14000 block of Lefthand Canyon Drive near the town of Ward. It has charred 312 acres as of Sunday night. Crews were still battling the fire Sunday but had contained the blaze north of Lefthand Canyon Drive.Smoke from both fires can be seen throughout most of Boulder and the surrounding area. The Boulder County fires prompted authorities to send out pre-evacuation notices to thousands of residents nearby, including people in the town of Lyons. In the Calwood Fire, there are 1,600 homes and 2,600 structures total in the evacuation area, and around 3,000 people impacted.Several roads are closed, including County Road 87, and officials evacuated Hall Ranch and Heil Valley trails. The map below shows the areas under an evacuation or pre-evacuation order:There is an evacuation check-in point for the Calwood Fire set up at 3460 N. Broadway where evacuees and pets can go to check-in and receive further information. The evacuation point for the Lefthand Canyon Fire is the Nederland Community Center, 750 Peak to Peak Hwy.Boulder County Sheriff Division Chief Mark Wagner said the number of homes lost or damaged in the fire is likely "very large."Wagner said a massive air attack Saturday helped contain the Calwood Fire. However, unfavorable weather conditions Sunday grounded aircraft. At least 250 firefighters are on the ground fighting the blaze. The Calwood Fire has become Boulder County's largest wildfire on record.County and Forest Service investigators are investigating the cause of the Calwood Fire. Wagner said there was no lightning strike data in the area which could rule out a natural cause for the fire. This story was originally published by Robert Garrison on KMGH in Denver. 2483
BONSALL, Calif. (KGTV) — The San Luis Rey Downs Country Club and Golf Course shut down after being a popular spot for many in the community for over 50 years. After four years of being a vacant property, a new project is underway to revamp the area. They’ll be revamping the inside and adding updates. The marketing director for Myrtle Creek, Kevin MacGregor tells 10News, “It’ll be basically what it was for the past 50 years, but with our spin on it minus the golf course of course”.RELATED: Evacuated horses begin to return home to San Luis Rey Downs after Lilac FireThe County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation tells 10News they purchased 200 acres from the golf course when it first shut down. They have plans to protect the natural habitats in the area with possibly adding some hiking trails. No revamped golf course is in any plans.Neighbors in the area are looking forward to the day the lot won’t be vacant and instead will bring them restaurants and bars right to their neighborhood. They tell 10News, over the past four years there’s been a problem with added trash and vandalism on the property. With construction underway and official new owners, they’re hopeful the mischief will subside.RELATED: Lilac Fire horses race at Del MarPhase two will include remodeling to the hotel also on the property. Myrtle Creek has plans to turn it into a 23-room boutique hotel.Christine Hoffman has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years, she even played on the golf course when it was open.Hoffman tells us the past four years have been sad for the neighbors nearby."To see it go in such disrepair the last few years is kind of heartbreaking," Hoffman said.Hoffman, like many other neighbors, are looking forward to the project. Because it’ll stay the same size and bring similar traffic as the golf course, no one is doubting the benefits of the project. 2013
