HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- A teenager who started the massive Eagle Creek Fire in Oregon has been ordered to pay more than in restitution, according to KOMO.The judge made the decision Monday. The teen’s attorney argued that the massive restitution would violate Oregon and U.S. constitutions because it would inflict “cruel and unusual punishment.”The Eagle Creek Fire started in September of 2017 and destroyed more than 48,000 acres of forest land in the Columbia River Gorge.The teen was 15 at the time of the fire. According to authorities, the teen was tossing fireworks into brush while hiking on the Eagle Creek Trail. One of the fireworks ignited the fire. 670

(AP) — Police in Alabama on Saturday were searching for a gunman whom they believe was responsible for shooting two teenagers at a shopping mall on Thanksgiving night.The incident began with a fight and shooting in suburban Birmingham at the Riverchase Galleria, a mall crowded with Black Friday bargain hunters. An 18-year-old was shot twice and a 12-year-old bystander was shot in the back.An officer responding to the scene then shot and killed 21-year-old Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford, Jr. of Hueytown. Police said Bradford was fleeing the scene and was brandishing a weapon.Police initially told reporters they thought Bradford had shot the teen after a fight but retracted that statement Friday night."New evidence now suggests that while Mr. Bradford may have been involved in some aspect of the altercation, he likely did not fire the rounds that injured the 18-year-old victim," Hoover Police Captain Gregg Rector said in a statement.Police said they "regret that our initial media release was not totally accurate."Rector said investigators now believe that more than two people were involved in the initial fight ahead of the shooting, and that "at least one gunman" is still at large who could be responsible for the shooting of an 18-year-old male and 12-year-old female.Video posted on social media by shoppers showed a chaotic scene as shoppers fled the mall, which closed for the remainder of Thursday night.The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has taken the lead role in the investigation since it is an officer-involved shooting.Hoover police asked for anyone with information, photos or video evidence of this crime scene to please contact investigators.A witness, Lexi Joiner, told Al.com she was shopping with her mother when the gunfire started. (AP) — Crews are working to recover the body of a tourist who slipped and fell over a Grand Canyon lookout.The fall happened Thursday morning on the Hualapai Tribe's reservation to the west of Grand Canyon National Park.David Leibowitz is a spokesman for Grand Canyon West, a popular tourist destination on the reservation. He says a man in his 50s from Hong Kong fell and slipped at Eagle Point while trying to take photographs. He says the man, who was part of a tour group, is presumed dead.Eagle Point is adjacent to the Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that juts out from the canyon wall. The rim has some ledges and outcroppings below but no barrier between tourists and the edge.Leibowitz says the area is closed for the day. 773

Greg Eubanks disappeared over the weekend, leaving his family frantic. Two days later, he was at home, safe.The 41-year-old had crashed his SUV around 3 a.m. Saturday in Oxon Hill, Maryland. The SUV went down an embankment and got stuck between the highway entrance and exit ramps, so his car wasn't visible from the road.Eubanks was hurt when he was thrown from the SUV. He was left laying at the bottom of the ravine with broken bones and a dead cell phone for two days and three nights. "He said he didn't think he was gonna make it," Tre Drew, Eubanks' cousin, said. "He heard several fire trucks passing, ambulance passing. He kept saying 'I know they're coming for me' and no one came for him."Eubanks' son, Greg Eubanks Jr., reported him missing Saturday, then drove around searching for his dad. "I was worried. I couldn't sleep. (I) rode around all day yesterday trying to find his car, just looking for any type of piece of evidence," the younger Eubanks said.A highway crew finally spotted Eubanks and his car while repairing a damaged guardrail on the Indian Head Highway. "He said it was the worst thing he's ever been through, and he has been through a lot," Drew said.Eubanks was taken to the hospital for treatment. His family says he is in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery.
