SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Computers have become a lifeline to San Diegans during the pandemic and a new partnership between the city and non-profit San Diego Futures Foundation could make it easier for people in need to get connected.Executive Director of San Diego Futures Foundation Gary Knight said the need skyrocketed the first three weeks of the shut down in March, "we distributed over half our annual inventory in that three weeks."That's more than 1,500 computers. The non profit partners with companies like Qualcomm, General Atomics and San Diego County to take on their old computers, refurbish them and connect them with people in need.City of San Diego Digital Strategy Manager Jen Lebron said 30,000 households don't have a computer, just within the city limits.Right now that means limited connection to healthcare, education and job seeking material."San Diego Futures Foundation has an incredibly broad reach, that way we can get these computers in the hands of students, seniors, veterans, foster families and non profits that really need the help," Lebron said.Michelle Sanudo recieved a computer from SDFF this month and said it's made her feel independent and successful. She's a single mom who relied on the library to entertain her four and one-year-old children while she worked."Really it was kind of like a sanctuary, I would get to do my paperwork for school, also apply for jobs," Sanudo said."When they closed the libraries that's when it hit me." She said the computer allows her to order groceries so she can keep her family safe during the pandemic and pursue her dream of becoming a medical assistant.As the need for computers continues in San Diego and SDFF's inventory wanes, they need more donations. That's where the city is stepping in. For the past year the city has been vetting the non profit. Wednesday the City Council Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations Committee unanimously approved the partnership. Now it must go before the full council to receive approval. The item is on the docket for Tuesday, the 21st."We are ready with nearly 2,300 computers that we can give to San Diego Futures Foundation." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County officials closed a portion of La Jolla's coastline after a sewage spill Friday morning.The closure was issued for the area of Playa Del Norte in Windansea, near the 7000 block of Neptune Pl., after a sewage spilled before 9:30 a.m.Seven year La Jolla resident Marc Hirschfield said he was walking his dogs Saturday morning when he noticed the yellow warning signs dotting the beach and asked lifeguards what happened. He said they told him "there was a manhole cover that overflowed and raw sewage spilled into the ocean."Lifeguards told 10News it was a storm drain to blame in the same area.The spill has been contained, according to the County Department of Environmental Health, but there still may be impacts to water quality after 130 gallons of sewage entered the beach area.Warning signs have been placed in the area until samples of the ocean water indicate the water is safe for recreational use. It's not clear how long the area will remain closed.Some beach-goers ignored the signs, others, like surfer Cole Reiner just didn't see them. "Well I went out into the water. I mean contaminated doesn’t sound great, but I was out there and it says may cause illness so that’s not great," he said. Lifeguards couldn't say when the beach would reopen. As of 4:30p.m. the county said the beach was still closed."City life guards recommend 72 hours so for me it’ll probably be 48," HIrschfield said. 1435

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Becky Buckingham is a nurse in the intensive care unit at Kaiser in San Diego. She has cared for patients who have tested positive for COVID19. “I would be lying if I didn’t say it's concerning and every nurse is fearful in going into these patients’ rooms,” Buckingham. “I think every nurse is eventually going to be impacted by these patients and have to take care of a patient under investigation, ruling out if they have it or not, or if they are actually positive.”She said nurses have a wide range of emotions when it comes to the current health crisis.“A lot of nurses that are extremely concerned because maybe they’re pregnant or they have babies at home or they take care of their elderly parents,” Buckingham said. “There’s also been nurses that are like, bring it on. I’ll take what I have to take. This is what I’m here for.” The supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) has been something causing concern among health care workers.Kaiser’s nurses’ union, the United Nurses Associations of California, recently sent a letter to the California Hospital Association, encouraging the state’s hospitals to immediately postpone all elective procedures and nonemergency surgeries, show hospital caregivers greater transparency in the status of PPE supplies, and partner with nurses to “get the right equipment in the right hands at the right time.”In response, the California Hospital Association said they support canceling all but essential elective surgeries and agreed to transparency with health care workers regarding PPEs, “especially as [they] know demand is great and supply is short.”Buckingham believes her hospital has enough PPEs for now, but the future is uncertain.“Kaiser has been more transparent this week with how they are obtaining more PPE, so I know that they have gone overseas and obtained more PPE that we will be getting in May. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Blake Davis' story is filled with chapters of love and laughter."We used to call him a smiley meatball! He was always a big guy, always in the 100th percentile in terms of growth and just really animated and really fun to be around," said Blake's mom, Leah. But at 14 months old, their seemingly healthy baby stopped breathing at the park. He was revived and rushed to the hospital. "He was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, so high blood pressure of the lungs," said Rob, Blake's dad.Doctors told Rob and Leah that this was rare in children. "We were overwhelmed lost, devastated, had no clue what was going on, what his future would be, and felt totally helpless," the couple said.As the months passed inside the hospital, friends and family asked what they could do to help. The family asked that they do something kind in Blake's honor, and share the story on a Facebook page created for Blake."It was this really, really beautiful, uplifting thing happening in the world during our darkest moments," said Leah. Blake was eventually released from the hospital, but months later, his condition then worsened. He needed a lung transplant."Ultimately, on January 2 of 2019, we got the news he was unanimously accepted onto the lung transplant registry. And that was the day he passed," said Leah.But the good deeds continued. "There are a lot that don't cost a penny. Helping someone at the grocery store, planting a tree, cleaning a beach," said Leah. What started in San Diego spread across the country and then the world. "Any selfless act whether it costs money or is free, anything positive and uplifting," said Rob.The Davis family created a website to document the movement sparked by Blake. People can share kind acts inspired by Blake through the website's "good deed tracker."The family also created kindness cards people can use to help share Blake's story. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cal Trans closed down a section of southbound I-5 Thursday night.The closer started at 9:30 p.m. from the I-805 split to La Jolla Village Drive.The closure is expected to last until 5 a.m. Friday.Crews shut down the section of freeway due to necessary work on the construction of a trolley overpass over the interstate. Teams needed to bring heavy equipment onto the freeway to pour concrete onto the structure.Overnight and early morning commuters that take I-5 SB is being rerouted to I-805 SB and will need to use Highway 52 or I-8 to cut over.Crews say they will need to do follow up work within on the overpass in the next few weeks, so drivers should expect the same closure again. 716
