WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. – It is pretty to look at, but at times, treacherous to encounter: when snowstorms wreak havoc on the ground, it can come with a cost. Yet, because of limited research, snowstorms are not as well-understood as other weather phenomenon. That’s about to change. Inside a noisy hangar at NASA’s Wallops Island facility in Virginia sits a specially outfitted P-3 aircraft, also known as a “snow chaser.” “Snow can have a huge economic impact,” said Lynn McMurdie, principal investigator for a new research project called IMPACTS. “To be able to fly inside the clouds, where the snowflakes form, enables us to study the processes that go into forming the snowflakes that eventually fall down to the earth as snowfall in your backyard.” It’s all part of a five-year, million research project called IMPACTS, which stands for Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast-Threatening Snowstorms. The team is embarking on its first snowstorm chasing flights this month. “It gets a bit turbulent. The plane is very capable and has great de-icing systems,” said Gerrit Everson, chief of flight operations at Wallops Flight Facility and a NASA pilot. “We would never put our crew or our passengers or the scientists in an unsafe position. So, we do a very good job at mitigating the risk. But, yeah, you do have to be willing to accept a certain degree of turbulence and bumps here and there.” It’s been 30 years since there’s been a major study of snowstorms like this one. What researchers are hoping to find out this time around isn’t just where the snow is going to fall, but how intense that snowfall might be. “People think the forecasting is really easy and simple, but it's actually very complicated,” McMurdie said. “Hopefully, we will be doing a better job so we can help joe citizen know what to do when there is a storm threatening.” Beyond that, scientists hope to also learn how snowfall can impact the water supply all over the planet. “We need water to survive and we need to understand how the water goes through the whole earth system,” McMurdie said.It’s a global ecosystem where winter wonderlands play a crucial part. 2186

A Dallas jury on Tuesday found former police officer Amber Guyger guilty of murder for fatally shooting her unarmed neighbor, Botham Jean, in his own apartment, which she said she mistook as hers.The jury deliberated less than 24 hours. A Phoenix couple is accused of forcing a day laborer at gunpoint to have sex with the female suspect, police say.Phoenix police on April 8 responded to a call from a man saying he was sexually assaulted by a couple at a home. According to court documents, Brenda Acuna Aguero, 39, picked up a day laborer and told the man her husband needed help moving some items at their home. When they arrived at her house, Aguero reportedly told the man that, "it was her fantasy to have sex with a laborer." The victim initially thought Aguero was teasing, but when he realized she wasn't, he told her he was not going to have sex with her. At that point, police say, the woman's husband, 45-year-old Jorge Francisco Valenzuela, came into the room with a rifle. Valenzuela allegedly placed the rifle on the victim's chest, and "told him he was going to have sex with his wife, or he would shoot him."The victim had sex with Aguero as Valenzuela filmed video and took pictures, and allegedly directed the victim to different sexual positions.Police say Valenzuela later stole the victim’s Mexican visa and driver's license, and forced the victim to call his wife so Valenzuela could get her phone number.Valenzuela allegedly told the victim to come back the next day to get his visa and license and have sex with Aguero. He then threatened to send the video to the victim's wife if he didn't comply, records show.Later the same day, Valenzuela allegedly demanded the victim returned to his home for another sexual encounter. When the victim arrived with a friend, Valenzuela sent the pictures to the victim’s wife.The victim contacted police, who arrested Valenzuela and Aguero at their home. They both allegedly admitted their actions, with Valenzuela saying they had done this before with about four other men.They are being held on a 0,000 bond for sexual assault. 1871

A judge has granted New England Patriot's owner Robert Kraft's motion to suppress surveillance video recorded in the charges of alleged prostitution against him, dealing a major blow to prosecutors in the case. Kraft faces two counts of soliciting prostitution after allegedly visiting the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter in January. In the order issued Monday, a judge wrote that Kraft had a "reasonable, subjective expectation of privacy, as would anyone seeking a private massage in a commercial or professional setting" in support of suppressing the video. The judge also suppressed all information obtained from the traffic stop involving Kraft in January. The State Attorney's Office can appeal this order. In addition, the Jupiter Police Department released hundreds of pages of evidence Monday into the investigation of alleged prostitution at the Orchids of Asia Day Spa. Records released show that as a result of the investigation, law enforcement seized and deposited more than a half-million dollars into a Wells Fargo bank account. Officials seized all of those funds after executing search warrants in Jupiter as well as Martin County and Orange County. The filings show that "covert surveillance video" and "body worn camera" videos are the main pieces of evidence gathered against the alleged "johns" in the case, including Kraft. Law enforcement collected an array of evidence against Hua Zhang and Lei Wang, two of the alleged "madams" in the case. The list of evidence spans several pages for both, and includes "0,000 in US currency," "documents obtained from trash pull," "paper napkins with seminal fluid" and receipts to the business. Both Zhang and Wang are facing multiple felonies as a result of the investigation. Records released Monday also show Hua Zhang bought the spa in 2009. According to Zhang's son, she purchased the day spa after working there as an employee. Several officers were involved "tactical ruse" used to install the covert surveillance cameras used in the "sneak and peek" warrant on Jan. 17, 2019. Jupiter Police borrowed the hidden cameras from the Martin County Sheriff's Office, and a deputy also helped with their installation. The night that investigators installed the cameras at the day spa, no one came out of the spa until after Hua Zhang and Lei Wang drove into the parking lot. Wang told officers that she was watching the spa through her security cameras being transmitted on her cellphone and that there were two women inside. She claimed that she was coming from a party to pick them up, despite that "she was dressed in a grey robe."Also, Wang's vehicle, a white Mercedes, "was under surveillance and had come from her residence in Hobe Sound." Law enforcement was on-scene at the spa the night the hidden cameras were installed from 11:00 PM until 1:30 AM. The hidden cameras were removed five days later, on January 22. It's unclear how police removed the cameras after having to create a "tactical ruse" to install them in the first place. Officials said that the Jupiter Police Dept. is planning to release several hundred photos from the investigation. Those pictures are still under review, but they are hoping to release them later this week. 3231
