BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- A Connecticut woman who was savagely attacked by a pet chimpanzee and had her face deformed in 2009 was shown on TV with a new face Thursday.TV pictures revealed Charla Nash’s new nose, lips and eyelid, which were transplanted in May by doctors at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.Nash said to the viewers that she can move her mouth, smile and smell. Her daughter Brianna added that her mother can even talk and eat better now.Dr. Bohdan Pomanhac led a 30-member surgical team to complete the face transplant in 20 hours. The team also transplanted two hands but these were later removed due to blood flow problem when Nash suffered pneumonia.Nash’s friend Sandra Herold owned a 15-year-old chimpanzee named Travis that attacked without any provocation when Nash was visiting Herold.Travis simply went berserk and could not be stopped even after Herold stabbed it with a kitchen knife. WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Observations from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have revealed possible flowing water during the warmest months on Mars, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Thursday.Dark, finger-like features appear and extend down some Martian slopes during late spring through summer, fade in winter, and return during the next spring. Repeated observations have tracked the seasonal changes in these recurring features on several steep slopes in the middle latitudes of Mars' southern hemisphere."The best explanation for these observations so far is the flow of briny water," said Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona, Tucson.McEwen is the principal investigator for the orbiter's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment and lead author of a report about the recurring flows to be published in Friday's edition of the journal Science.Seven such sites on the planet have been confirmed, with 20 more possible, McEwen said."What makes these new observations so interesting is they occur at much lower latitudes where temperatures are much warmer and where it's actually possible for liquid water to exist," said Arizona State University geophysicist Phil Christensen, one of the scientists who studied the images beamed back from the orbiter.The study does not prove water exists, but identifies it as the best explanation. It's worthwhile to think about alternative reasons for these observations, but none seems to fit as well as briny water, McEwen said."I think it's going to be laboratory experiments on Earth that give us the best confirmation or refutation," he said.

DUBLIN, June 27 (Xinhua) -- The Irish government is aiming to increase internet literacy among older people with the launch of a 1.6 million euro training program, according to a cabinet minister on Monday.The goal of the scheme is to provide basic internet skills to 30,000 elderly people across the country who are less likely engage with the internet themselves.The announcement was made by Irish communications minister Pat Rabbitte at a new computer training facility run by Age Action Ireland, an Irish charity which promotes positive aging and better policies and services for older people.The Irish minister detailed how the training program will help those involved."This scheme will enable thousands of people throughout Ireland, people otherwise likely to be left behind in the knowledge society, to acquire the basic practical know-how to improve their digital skills. In particular this will help older people, those with disabilities, the unemployed and other key target groups. They will learn to use the internet, emails and how to conduct simple on-line transactions," he said."Previous schemes show that learning such basic skills helps people in many ways, giving them new communication options, new opportunities to save money, as well as better access to a wide range of on-line services," he added."We have also seen how such new skills and the opportunities that result from them improve people's confidence and wellbeing. More widespread participation in the knowledge society is a win- win outcome with advantages for citizens, government and the wider economy."

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese rating agency Dagong Global Credit Rating Co. on Saturday defended its AAA rating given to the Ministry of Railways, which has been under public fire over a train collision last month.The ministry received the long-term credit rating after launching on Monday its first bond sales since the crash on July 23 that killed 40 people near the Wenzhou city of eastern Zhejiang province.It sold 20 billion yuan worth of three-month bills on offer in the interbank market, with a yield of 5.55 percent, a relatively high rate for short-term government paper.The rating was assigned because of the ministry's status as a government agency backed by the central government revenue, its sufficient capital flows and strong financing ability, Dagong said in an email to Xinhua.The agency made the elaboration in response to market doubts as the ministry is already heavily indebted and the accident has stirred up skepticism about the its credibility and the safety of fast-expanding railways.Adding to doubts is that the AAA rating of the ministry is even a notch above China's local currency debt rating of AA+, which was also rated by Dagong.Government data showed the ministry's debts exceeded 2 trillion yuan (313 billion U.S. dollars) as of the end of June, raising its debt ratio to 58.53 percent, slightly up from the end of the first quarter of this year.Dagong said in the statement that the debt-to-asset ratio is medium level, lower than the alert line for the ministry which is 75 percent.The ministry has large-scale assets of good quality and relatively large room for fund-raising, Dagong said.The ministry has "extremely strong" repayment ability as it is backed by the state's credit, Dagong said, referring it as one of the three authorities that are allowed to issue bonds, along with the Ministry of Finance and the People's Bank of China.In July, the ministry issued 20 billion yuan of one-year commercial papers with a coupon rate of 5.18 percent, but only 18.73 billion yuan of the total was bought.Analysts said it has become more difficult for the ministry to borrow money because of tightened market liquidity and concerns over the ministry's debt burden.China's top four banks said at the end of last month that they will continue to offer loans to the ministry based on market conditions and risk appraisal. BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- No newly-formed oil belt was detected in the past two days in north China's Bohai Bay from ConocoPhillips' platforms in the Penglai 19-3 oilfield, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said.However, new spots of visible oil spills could still be found around platform C, the SOA said in a statement on Sunday.It is estimated that about 4.51 liters of oil leaked into the sea on Saturday, a slight drop from 6.56 liters from Thursday.No oil clean-up work was done on Friday and Saturday due to the strong winds and rough conditions at sea, the statement said.ConocoPhillips China, a subsidiary of U.S. energy giant ConocoPhillips, first reported spills to authorities in June. The oil spills have polluted more than 5,500 square km of sea water in the Bohai Bay since June.The oil spills have spread to beaches in Hebei and Liaoning provinces. The spills have been blamed for losses in the provinces' tourism and aquatic farming industries.The company on Aug. 31 submitted a report to the SOA claiming that it had screened out all potential sources for oil spills and blocked all oil leaks.After days of evaluation, however, the SOA said on Sept. 2 that ConocoPhillips had failed to complete the clean-up.
