SHANGHAI, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The China Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo welcomed the 8 millionth visitor Saturday as a senior pavilion official announced its exhibition would run for another six months, beginning Dec.1."The China Pavilion's exhibitions will be extended for half a year beginning Dec.1 to meet people's needs", said Qian Zhiguang, deputy director of the China Pavilion on Saturday.The China Pavilion, named "The Crown of the East", has become increasingly popular since the World Expo open on May 1, with an average of 50,000 visitors daily.However, space restrictions have resulted in many visitors being turned away during the Expo, which closes at the end of October.Further, the China Pavilion is negotiating with local museums which are displaying historical items, to continue showing these national treasures, including bronze chariots and horses from the Qin Emperor, ancient porcelain, and invaluable Chinese paintings from 800 years ago.The China Pavilion is one of the permanent structures that will remain after the World Expo.

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The central parity rate of the yuan, China's currency Renminbi (RMB), dropped 43 basis points Tuesday to 6.6775 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Tuesday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by 2.19 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.The PBOC released the yuan's central parity rates against a basket of currencies -- the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen, the Hong Kong dollar, the British pound and the Malaysian Ringgit.The yuan's parity rate against the euro was set by the central bank at 9.2574 Tuesday, higher from 9.3215 on Oct. 11, the previous trading day.The yuan's rate against 100 yen was 8.124 Tuesday, compared with 8.1276 on Monday.The yuan's rate against the British pound was 10.6042, compared with 10.6311 on the previous trading day.The central parity of RMB against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of enquired prices from all market makers before the opening of the market in each business day.The central parity of RMB against the other five currencies is based on the central rate of RMB against the U.S. dollar of the same business day as well as the exchange rates of the five currencies against the U.S. dollar at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) of the same business day in the international foreign exchange market.

BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Africa celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing Monday, outlining future efforts for greater development of the new type of strategic partnership.Addressing a reception marking the anniversary, Jia Qinglin, top Chinese political advisor, thanked all those who have contributed to the development of FOCAC, a platform for dialogue and pragmatic cooperation between China and Africa launched in October 2000.Hailing the establishment of the forum as a strategic decision by Chinese and African leaders, Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the mechanism of the forum has gradually improved and borne growing significance over the last decade.China and Africa have enjoyed increasingly frequent high-level exchanges, mutual political trust and trade relations. FUZHOU, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Zhou Yongkang, while on an inspection tour, has urged officials in the coastal province of Fujian in southeast China to pursue leapfrog economic development.Fujian should make full use of the opportunity for development and put in place the next five-year development plan based upon its real conditions to significantly improve the people's standards of living, said Zhou, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.He further said the province should increase its economic and cultural exchanges with Taiwan.Zhou also told officials to divert more government spending and public services to impoverished areas and low-income residents to boost the development of the old revolutionary base areas, as well as the western and northern areas in Fujian.

We will give the organization and the Secretary-General strong support," Yang told Ban.The UN chief thanked China's backing to the UN and himself and expressed willingness to further cooperation with China.Congratulating China on the success of the World Expo, Ban said he had a "most impressive" day in Shanghai Saturday by seeing the "biggest expo" in his life.Ban visited pavilions including the UN, China, Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. He will attend the World Expo closing ceremony and opening ceremony of World Expo Summit Forum slated for Sunday.Yang and Ban also exchanged views on Millennium Development Goals (MDG), climate change and other international and regional affairs.
