SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some students in the San Diego Unified School District are being allowed to return to campus Tuesday as the district begins the first phase of its reopening plan.The district began the 2020-21 school year on Aug. 31 with a distance learning program for its students. In recent weeks, during the distance learning period, teachers have been working to determine which students they believe would benefit from appointment-based in-person learning sessions.Appointment sessions will be voluntary; the rest of the time, those students will continue with distance learning.SD Unified officials said they’ve also been working with health experts in designing a reopening plan that would ensure all students and staff are safe.Despite the reopening plan, there are some parents who still do not believe it’s enough.On Tuesday afternoon, a group of parents called Reopen SDUSD has scheduled a rally at 4 p.m. in front of the Board of Education building to voice their concerns about the reopening plan.The group, which held a similar rally last month, is calling for a more detailed reopening plan and they want the district to be more transparent.Reopen SDUSD has gathered thousands of signatures for a petition urging the district to allow more students to return to campus.ABC 10News spoke with some parents at the September rally who said they want options because distance learning is not working for them.One mother said her children “dread going on Zoom. They dread being on the computer. They don’t like learning via the screen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Southern California home sales are seeing a significant drop, according to a new report by CoreLogic. In San Diego County, home sales are down more than eight percent year-over-year. Despite a dip in sales, home prices rose 2.6 percent from February of 2018 to February of 2019.The median home price in February was 9,000, CoreLogic reports. The report points out that total SoCal home sales in February were the lowest since February of 2008, when only 10,777 homes were sold. According to the report, sales have fallen on a year-over-year basis for the last seven consecutive months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several women appeared in San Diego County Court to recall the interactions they had with Juan Carlos Cordero, the man they claim raped them. San Diego Police arrested 35-year-old Cordero in March for multiple felony sex crimes beginning in 2015. Police said he would approach intoxicated women at bars or online, take them back to his home, and rape them. One by one, the women came into the courtroom Wednesday, to answer questions at the preliminary hearing. The accusers said admittedly, some of the details of what happened are foggy."I'm not sure," one woman replied. "I honestly don't remember, but I was embarrassed that I didn't remember," said another. "I felt like ... I was drugged," another woman said. One woman said she met Cordero after posting on a singles advertisement on Craigslist. She was hoping for a pleasant interaction but said it turned horrific. She said she did everything Cordero told her to do, fearing for her life."He threatened me with spanks with the belt, a weapon," she said. Another woman said she met Cordero on a dating site when she was 18. She admitted lying to her father about Cordero, saying he was a person she knew. But after drinking a few beers in San Diego County, she said Cordero drove her to his home in Newport Beach. "I don't remember very much until I woke up to him yelling at me that I was being too loud, and that I was like every other girl and that I was going to wake up his neighbors," she recalled.After that interaction, she demanded Cordero drive her back to San Diego. In fear that her parents would scold her, she said she did not tell them what had happened, until a few hours later. On the drive home, she remembered that Cordero punched her face repeatedly."I grabbed the steering wheel and yanked it on the freeway," she said. "He [Cordero] got off at the next exit, and I ran into the Denny's."She then had her father pick her up at the restaurant in San Clemente. The following day, she said she went into a hospital to take a drug and rape kit.Another accuser said last fall, she and Cordero went on what started as a nice first date. But she ended up unconscious and woke up in pain."I noticed welts on the back of my butt, I guess," she said. Tearing up, she said she was too embarrassed to report the incident because the two continued to date. After they broke up, she said she read an article about Cordero and his alleged victims. That is when she decided to go to the police and tell her own story."He choked me until the point where I couldn't breathe," she said. "And I asked him to stop." "And what did he say?" prosecutor Martin Doyle said. "That he could end me right then and no one would know," she replied. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Smoke from a fire burning in Mexico is visible throughout San Diego Thursday. The blaze is burning roughly five miles into Mexico amid hot, windy conditions. According to Cal Fire, the fire poses no threat to the U.S. at this time. The agency said, however, it is monitoring the situation and will send a response if the fire threatens San Diego County. A red flag warning was issued for much of San Diego County through Friday. “Winds will get stronger during the day today peaking overnight into Friday early afternoon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego welcomed several adorable birds to the flock this week, well, "flamboyance."The park welcomed seven Caribbean flamingo chicks to the mix, ranging from 2 to 11 days old, recently.The birds have entered breeding season, SeaWorld says, and cute gray, fluffy newborns will be available to see at Flamingo Cove.RELATED: SeaWorld offers Inside Look as additional experienceFlamingo eggs incubate for about 28 days before hatching, according to the park. Both the male and female take turns sitting on top of the nest to incubate the egg.Once hatched, both parents feed the chick by producing a secretion called, "crop milk."While flamingos are known for the bright pink feathers, they are born with gray or white down feathers.
