SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man who apparently set himself on fire and died of burn injuries is unidentified, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office said Friday in a plea for the public’s help. An artist created a rendering of the man who told first responders his name was Randy. Medical Examiner’s Investigator Tessa Lee said Randy apparently set himself ablaze under an overpass bridge in Carmel Valley July 4. He died six days later. Randy’s burns were too severe for investigators to obtain fingerprints or identify tattoos or a birthmark. The man was Hispanic or Caucasian, in his 20s to early 40s, with short dark hair, and green or hazel eyes. He stood between 5’9” and 5’11”, and weighed about 270 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new program is helping San Diegans get back into the classroom without the fear of crippling student loans. Offered through the San Diego Workforce Partnership and UC San Diego Extension, the program costs nothing upfront.It's called an Income Share Agreement (ISA); tuition is covered, and students agree to pay a small proportion of their income for a set period of time after graduating.The programs include front-end web development, Java programming, business intelligence, or digital marketing; each costs ,500.Adam Taylor is part of the first cohort of students. The Marine Corps veteran is still working to pay back student loans from several years ago but wanted to further his education to increase his salary."It seemed like a little more security in taking a chance and investing in yourself, as opposed to the school loans where they really don't care if you get a job or not," said Taylor, who's studying digital marketing. The program is possible thanks to million in grant funding, with Strada Education Network providing an initial .2 million. Strada granted the money to the Workforce to increase access and diversity in tech through ISAs.The program succeeds if students succeed. Those who get a job and pay back into the program will support future students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized after being hit by a car near Liberty Station Tuesday night. According to San Diego Police, the crash happened near Rosecrans Street and Laning Road around 5:17 p.m. Police say the victim, only described as a man in his 60s, was crossing the street in a designated crosswalk when the driver of a car turned left and hit the man. The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. According to police, the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating. 517

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A judge declared a mistrial Monday in the retrial of an undocumented immigrant accused of being the driver in a San Ysidro hit-and-run crash which seriously injured a young boy.Constantino Banda Acosta was charged with the crash on Camino de la Plaza May 6, 2017.Investigators said Banda ran a stop sign at Dairy Mart Rd. and crashed his pickup truck into the Lake family’s Honda Accord.6-year-old Lennox Lake was in a child safety seat at the back of the car. He suffered serious head injuries.Banda left the scene but was arrested about two miles away after Border Patrol agents spotted his damaged truck parked on a street, police said.RELATED: Retrial begins for undocumented immigrant in crashDuring Banda's first trial, his passenger, Jorge Adame Ariza, also an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, testified under a grant of immunity during the defendant's two-day preliminary hearing in June that he and Banda had a number of beers that night before the accident.Adame said Banda got into a fight with another man outside a Chula Vista restaurant. Adame told them he picked up Banda but later moved into the passenger seat with Banda behind the wheel during the crash.San Diego police Officer Michael Muniz testified in the first trial that Banda's blood-alcohol content measured .151 and .152 percent -- the legal limit is .08 -- during two breathalyzer tests.Federal immigration officials said Banda has been deported from the United States 17 times.Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials told 10News if Banda is not tried again (and effectively not convicted) he may or may not be deported.  ICE has requested that he be forwarded to the agency's custody upon any potential release. Banda's release will be subject to the Sheriff's Department under the California Sanctuary Law, ICE officials said. A judge will decide Friday whether a third trial will take place. 1938

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego dentist is giving parents a new tool to win the battle over brushing.Dr. Kami Hoss recently released a singing toothbrush that pairs with augmented reality technology."We gotta come up with brushes that are really fun and educate in a fun way," says Dr. Hoss.The brush plays a song for two minutes, which is the amount of time dentists recommend for brushing teeth. While the song plays, kids can use an app to watch augmented reality characters come to life on their phones.The characters "pop out" of a sticker placed on the bathroom mirror and teach kids how to brush properly. Hoss says this is the first toothbrush to use AR."It's Pixar quality," says Dr. Hoss of the animation. "We spent years developing this to make sure it's beautiful."According to the CDC, around 20% of kindergarteners have some form of tooth decay. Studies show that children brush their teeth 73% longer when listening to music. The toothbrush also helps people know when it's time to buy a new one. If someone uses it to brush twice a day, the battery will die after three months.
